There was a time when the question, "Do you want to go to Pizza Hut?" would leave kids and adults alike jumping up and down with glee. Pan pizza? All-you-can eat buffet? Say less. But increasingly, many customers are coming to terms with the reality that this pizza chain, which closed 250 locations in February 2026 due to declining sales, just isn't what it used to be.

It's easy to look back on Pizza Hut's glory days in the 1990s and feel nostalgic for a time gone by, but rose-tinted glasses aren't the only reason many customers are complaining about Pizza Hut in the here and now. Of course, many wish we could turn back the clock, but, more than that, lots of customers just want Pizza Hut to deliver good quality pizzas.

It's arguably not much to ask, but unfortunately, in many cases, it seems to be a struggle. Well, that's what Reddit is saying anyway. We scanned through the social media platform to find out the most common complaints customers have about the Hut. It turns out, many have some pretty choice things to say about the restaurant chain.

The quality has declined

In 2016, Pizza Hut launched a proud new tagline, "No One Out Pizzas the Hut." It was a bold, risky brag for the chain, which, let's be honest, has been struggling to stay on top since the 2000s. Unfortunately for Pizza Hut, that tagline has ended up as perfect fodder for online mockery from customers who say the quality has dropped dramatically at the Hut. "Practically [everyone] out-pizzas the hut," reads one Reddit post with more than 530 upvotes in r/unpopularopinion. "You'd think that with such a bold slogan, a pizza company would stop selling their customers thawed cardboard with cheese on it."

Others have also compared Pizza Hut crust to paper, while some say the pizzas are too greasy and soggy to be enjoyable anymore. While many believe that it hasn't been any good since the 1990s, others maintain the decline is far more recent. "Pizza Hut was my go-to for the last decade," said one Redditor in r/pizzahut. "It was always consistent, hot, and tasted good." They continued, "The last two times I got Pizza Hut, it was very disappointing. The quality has declined. So I'm not going there anymore."

Some customers say that the quality of Pizza Hut pizza depends on what you get. For example, when our taste-tester ranked items from the chain in 2024, they panned (get it?) the Tavern Double Pepperoni, calling it "overwhelming and greasy." However, they had higher praise for the Tavern Pesto Margherita, declaring there "wasn't a bad slice to be had."

It got rid of the buffet

It's the summer of 1992. "Batman Returns" is in movie theaters, you've spent the whole day playing with your Talkboy, and the whole family is about to head to Pizza Hut to try out one of its brand new all-you-can-eat buffets — life is good. It's not surprising that Pizza Hut's buffets were beloved by so many families in the 1990s. For less than $4, customers could fill up on as much pasta, salad, and slices of pizza as they liked.

So, it's also not surprising that the lack of buffet in Pizza Hut's modern restaurants (they started disappearing in the mid-2010s) is a major gripe for many customers. "When they got rid of the buffets, the small personal pan pizzas, changed their crust and sauce, they ruined it," said one Redditor in r/pizzahut. "It's absolute sh*t now aside from the breadsticks." Another added, "They need to bring back the buffet. That's the most sure fire route to get people accustomed to eating there again, and with positive impressions."

Pizza Hut appears to have listened to customers. Well, kind of. Its buffets are a much rarer sight now, but in some locations, they do still exist. In 2024, the chain started reviving the restaurant staple in select restaurants across the U.S. Customers have spotted buffets in states including Montana, Missouri, and Ohio.

It's overpriced

We'll be honest: We don't know of many restaurant chains that haven't been accused of being too expensive at this point. Subway, Jack in the Box, Chick-fil-A, and several other fast food joints made our list of the most overpriced chains customers are avoiding in 2026, for example. Olive Garden, Jimmy John's, and seafood chains like Red Lobster and Long John Silver's have also fielded overpriced accusations. Given the affordability crisis and increasing inflation, the club just keeps growing. And guess what? Pizza Hut is in it, too. Go on, at least feign some surprise.

"Pizza Hut is just too expensive for what it is," reads one post in r/pizzahut with more than 170 upvotes. "Even with coupons." One person replied, "Freaking bizarre how they're still in business. I've given up a lot of fast food because [of] the ridiculous pricing." Some customers have expressed shock at being charged almost $30 for a single pizza, and others say the extortionate prices have led them to support independent pizza shops instead. "Overpriced [dog food] brought to you by private equity," complained one disgruntled Reddit user. "Like most things, it used to be way better."

The portions are smaller

Another major problem people have with chains right now? Everything is shrinking. According to McDonald's fans, the Filet-O-Fish has gotten smaller, and some In-N-Out patrons say the burgers are significantly smaller than they used to be. They're probably not imagining things. Shrinkflation is a very real concept, and it basically means that companies are seeking to cut costs by reducing the size of products, all while charging the same price (or increasing the prices). In a shock to probably no-one, Pizza Hut has also been accused of shrinkflation tactics.

Some people have even resorted to measuring pizzas to check whether they're the right size. And spoiler alert: Sometimes they're not. "I bought a large the other night," said one Redditor in r/shrinkflation. "I had to call back because seriously it wasn't even as big as a medium. I'll buy the take home pizzas now from the grocery stores!" Others say they have noticed a thinner crust, while some say toppings like pepperoni are noticeably skimpier.

According to some customers, portions of sides aren't as generous as they used to be either. In fact, even employees have taken note. One Reddit user who said that they worked at an East Coast location said that the wings at their location shrunk without any change in price.

It's inconsistent

Clearly, many people have beef with Pizza Hut. But not everyone is ready to cast the chain aside just yet. Some people say that Pizza Hut can deliver perfectly good pizza, but the problem is, it can be a little bit unpredictable. "I love Pizza Hut in theory but I find it so inconsistent," said one Redditor in r/pizzahut. "I don't wanna roll the dice on [a] half cooked greasy mess of a pizza."

Some say they have worked out which locations are the best, and which ones are best avoided, in order to get the best quality for their buck. But it doesn't always work. "It's good when it's good, but it's the least consistent," claimed another customer in r/fastfood. "I have gotten so many undercooked pizzas from them over the years."

According to some customers, there are a few tips and tricks you need to know if you want to increase the chance of getting a good pizza every time. Some swear that Hut Dust, a seasoning blend of dry cheese, herbs, and spices, makes everything taste better, for example. Others say that asking for pepperoni under the cheese helps get rid of some of the greasiness, and many note that asking for your order well-done is a tried-and-tested way to ensure your pizza is crispy every time (and not just from Pizza Hut, but from all pizza restaurants).

It changed the Pan Pizza recipe

Since it first hit the menu in 1980, Pizza Hut's Pan Pizza has, for the most part, been one of the chain's most beloved dishes. You can probably taste it right now, with its crispy, crunchy exterior and soft doughy inside. But in 2019, Pizza Hut decided to do something totally left field: It changed the recipe for Pan Pizza.

According to the chain, the new version was supposed to be even crispier, with a superior blend of sauce and cheese. But reader, you already know where we're going with this: Many customers were not impressed. "Ughhhh Pizza Hut's pan pizza used to be [incredible]," complained one Redditor in r/pizzahut after the recipe change. Another user chimed in, "It used to [have] a nice crispy crust. What were they [thinking?]"

It seems that Pizza Hut has experimented with the recipe even more since 2019. In 2025 and 2026, customers started speculating once again about whether the Pan Pizza had changed. "The only right way to get their pan pizza is for them to go back to the 90's," said one Redditor in r/pizzahut. Another agreed, noting, "the Hut hasn't been the best option for pan pizza since the 90's."

The customer service is poor

If you have a bad pizza experience, you're already going to be in a pretty glum mood. But one thing that will undeniably make it worse is struggling to get fairly compensated for the mistake, be it a wrong order, a failed delivery, or food of subpar quality (which, as we've established, happens quite a bit).

But unfortunately, many Pizza Hut customers say that getting a refund is not an easy process. One Redditor even referred to the arduous process of talking to chatbots and call-center employees as "an hour long goose chase." They successfully got a coupon for a new pizza in the end, but it wasn't the same value as their original order.

Some say the only way to get a response is to message Pizza Hut on X or to go through the local restaurant rather than contact the corporate office. Others have given up completely. "Pizza Hut has the worst customer service on the planet," wrote one Redditor in r/pizzahut, before declaring, "We will be going elsewhere for pizza in future."

The website is difficult to use

Back in 1994, the Pizza Hut website was a pioneer. Before its creation, most people either ordered their pizza over the phone or in person, but PizzaNet made it possible to order pizza using the internet. It was revolutionary, and Pizza Hut looked to be set for a future as a tech pioneer. But sadly, progress has slowed down significantly since then. In fact, some might say that Pizza Hut's website is still stuck in the 1990s, and not in a good way.

"The Pizza Hut website is easily the worst of all restaurants," proclaimed one Redditor in r/pizzahut in a post with more than 150 upvotes. "I don't know how many times this crap doesn't function." Another user replied: "Agree — it's quirky and weird to use."

In fact, some people say the Pizza Hut website is so clunky and frustrating that they have simply gone elsewhere for their pizza. One key problem is that it's not intuitive with confusingly placed buttons, say some, while others say that no matter how many times they refresh the page, their order doesn't go through. "They have the worst pizza of all pizza restaurants, so having the worst website pairs well with that," stated one Redditor. Ouch.

It's not the same as it was in the 1990s

Many people look back on the 1990s as one of the best decades in recent history, and it's easy to see why. Facebook was just a twinkle in the eye of Mark Zuckerberg, legendary sitcoms were on the television (it was the golden age of "Friends" and "The Simpsons"), and the economy was relatively strong. Oh, and Pizza Hut was in its heyday.

It wasn't just the better-quality pizza or the buffets that made Pizza Hut extra special in the 1990s, it was the overall vibe. With its iconic red roof, vinyl booths, and stained-glass lamps, a trip to the Hut offered a real sense of occasion for the whole family. Today, many people are nostalgic for that era. "It was by far my favorite pizza place when growing up in the 90s, and there is still a nostalgia factor with it," said one Redditor in r/fastfood. "I can't ever put my finger on exactly what it is, but it's not the same."

Some have speculated whether it's simply the nostalgia that makes them feel that Pizza Hut used to be better, but others are adamant that it's just no longer the same. "How the mighty have fallen," said another Reddit user in r/AskAnAmerican. "Last time I had some, probably a few years ago at a party, it was barely edible ... and I don't think [it's] nostalgia talking. I think [it's] just gotten flat out bad."
