If a tree falls in the woods, and no one's around to hear it, did it make a sound? What came first, the chicken or the egg? And what is the best kind of pizza? These questions are mind-bending and unanswerable. We can't tell you what the best kind of pizza is, but there is definitely a way to make a good pizza even better when you're at Pizza Hut. Get Hut Dust seasoning on top.

Hut Dust is a dry seasoning blend shaken over the top of Pizza Hut's Chicago Tavern Style pizzas. It's made from a blend of dry cheeses including Parmesan, Romano, and what the ingredients list as "hard grating cheese." It also includes cellulose, garlic, spices, salt, and parsley. Though Pizza Hut does not list the specific spices included in Hut Dust, Pizza Hut employees and customers have speculated online that it includes herbs like oregano and basil.

Hut Dust's savory blend, which Pizza Hut calls "cheesy garlic Hut Dust seasoning," boosts the flavor of any pizza. Adding it was one of our tips for getting the best pepperoni pizza from Pizza Hut. The salty, umami elements from the cheese along with the subtle earthy, herbaceous flavors from oregano and basil enhance the flavor of the sauce and toppings. The garlic powder also brings a sweet and savory complexity that is much mellower than fresh garlic but still noticeable. These are all common additions used to elevate any standard pizza and bringing them together makes Hut Dust a welcome addition to your pie.

Hut Dust is a must

Hut Dust is very similar to the Fairy Dust seasoning Pizza Hut used in the past, which was also a cheese and spice blend. A former Pizza Hut manager posted a recipe they use for a Fairy Dust dupe that included grated Parmesan, garlic powder, onion salt, and oregano. As a homemade substitute, it seems like it's very similar to Hut Dust.

Fairy Dust was used at Pizza Hut as far back as the 1980s and was even sprinkled on the breadsticks. Training videos from that era indicate that the number of shakes of Fairy Dust varied by pizza size, so larger pizzas received more seasoning. There was even a chart posted on the wall in Pizza Hut kitchen that employees could check if they weren't sure. We called a Pizza Hut location to ask if there was a standard measurement for Hut Dust and were told it was simply shaken over the pizza until it was covered.

Pizza Hut only filed the trademark application for Hut Dust in 2024. Chicago Tavern Style Pizza was introduced at Pizza Hut in June 2024, and it appears that Hut Dust debuted at the same time. Because it usually only comes by default on Tavern Style pizza, you may have never tried it before. However, we were told by a Pizza Hut employee that customers could request Hut Dust on any pizza. You can either leave a request for Hut Dust in the special instructions section when you order online. If you're worried about the restaurant missing it, call in your order and ask for Hut Dust to ensure you get it.
