8 Discontinued Burger King Whoppers That Deserve A Comeback
While Burger King features a wide variety of different options on its menu, the burger chain is arguably best known for its Whopper, a cheese-less burger that is undeniably one of the most beloved in the fast food landscape. But to be fair, the Whopper isn't a standalone item — it's actually a series of sandwiches (and sandwich-like dishes) that have been rolled out at Burger King over the years, including some pretty wild takes on the original. We're taking a closer look at some of the now-discontinued Burger King Whoppers that we believe deserve a comeback, either because of their deliciousness or just because they're fun, novel options.
Unfortunately, these Whoppers are no longer on the BK menu, but we hope they make a reappearance someday soon ... and it seems like other customers do, too. Maybe you got the chance to eat these fast food treats before they left the menu, or perhaps you're just dreaming about the day when you'll actually get to try them for yourself. Whether these items will actually grace the BK menu once again remains unclear, but taking a tasty walk down memory lane (perhaps with an OG Whopper in hand) can be a great way to relive the fast food glory days of the past.
Western Whopper
For those who like especially bold, heavy flavors, Burger King's Western Whopper was a standout. It wasn't that different from a standard Whopper, except for the fact that it came with barbecue sauce and bacon (along with cheese). But if you can't remember this sandwich yourself, you're not alone. That's because it was on the menu quite a long time ago, in the mid-1990s, and it was only available for a limited amount of time. By 1997, it was removed from the menu. That being said, Burger King locations in Japan rolled out a similar sandwich, the Western Smoky Whopper, over two decades later in the early 2020s.
There are some out there who definitely do remember the Western Whopper, though. One Facebook user made a whole video about the sandwich, reliving that 1990s nostalgia. Another Western Whopper fan invoked the burger on Reddit, saying that they could still smell the now-defunct sandwich while posting a photo of the inside of a very vintage-looking Burger King. It's obvious that this limited-time sandwich had a big impact on the fast food scene in the '90s, and it's certainly one of the discontinued Burger King items that people out there still think about.
Whopperito
You might understandably expect that every single Whopper on this list is, in fact, an actual sandwich, but that's ultimately a debatable claim. After all, can you truly say that the Whopperito is a sandwich? But we digress. Basically, the Whopperito was an attempt to mold a burger into burrito form. It contained ground beef, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and lettuce, all wrapped into a flour tortilla, as you would expect from any burrito recipe. So yes, it provided those classic Whopper flavors we all know and love, but in a totally different format. It made its debut back in 2016, but these days, it's no longer a part of Burger King's lineup.
Although it's been a decade since the Whopperito first landed on BK's menu, there are some who still dream about the fast food menu item. One Redditor made a post about the dish in r/BurgerKing, saying how upset they are that it's gone and that they won't get to experience it again. Another Reddit user posted about the Whopperito in r/stupidfood, and it elicited an outpouring of nostalgia for some and curiosity for others.
One commenter wrote that the Whopperito was their favorite, before quipping alongside a shrug emoji, "Of course I was an 18 year old and could literally live off of these without gaining weight but hey." Another person felt the dish didn't look all that appetizing, but they still wanted to try it regardless.
Ghost Pepper Whopper
Spicy fast food lovers, we have something for you. It's Burger King's Ghost Pepper Whopper, which came out in October 2022. This burger didn't get its heat from just a single element on the sandwich. Rather, there were several, working together in concert to make for an undeniably fiery menu item. In the middle of two orange, black sesame seed-studded buns, you'd find queso cheese, crispy jalapeños, and a ghost pepper cheese to really drive that heat home. The burger also came adorned with bacon. It was a limited-time, Halloween-themed item, but it was brought back to the menu in October 2023. These days, though, spicy fast food fans seeking this specific Whopper are out of luck.
There are people out there who still hope that the burger will someday come back, though. A Reddit user posted about the sandwich, asking others on r/BurgerKing whether anyone had heard if it was coming back for the 2026 fall season. One commenter said, "That's the best sandwich BK has ever released, and I'd be keen on buying one every other day until they're gone."
A similar question was asked in the same subreddit back in 2024, as well. So, it's safe to say that Burger King fans still have the Ghost Pepper Whopper on their minds.
Fiesta Whopper
Burger King's Whopper is famous for its lack of cheese (in its standard form, that is), which is perfect for those who prefer a regular burger to an actual fast food cheeseburger. But many of the most creative takes on the classic actually do feature cheese. The Fiesta Whopper was one such burger. Making its debut on the Burger King menu all the way back in 1998, it prominently featured pepper jack cheese for a touch of heat and creaminess. This burger also excluded the standard pickles and nixed the ketchup, opting for a spicy sauce instead. These simple adjustments may not seem like much, but believe us when we say that burger toppings can absolutely make or break a sandwich.
Some Burger King customers seem to wish that the Fiesta Whopper was back on the menu. "I ate one daily and always got the fiesta seasoning for the fries," one Reddit user shared in r/90s, but they also recognized, "When I reminisce about it, nobody remembers it. Was BK just ahead of the times?" Well, when an account on Facebook posted an old commercial for the menu item, it struck a sense of nostalgia in the heart of at least one commenter. Meanwhile, in response to that same Reddit post, one Fiesta Whopper fan called the seasoning "killer," adding, "I'll sign the petition to bring it back!"
Since this is a sandwich that came out in the '90s, it doesn't seem totally likely that it will make a resurgence at the fast food chain any time soon. But hey, we can always hope.
Whopper Dog
This is another Burger King Whopper menu item that may or may not count as a sandwich. It's definitely not a burger, though. The Whopper Dog was basically just a standard hot dog adorned with the typical Whopper toppings, including pickles, lettuce, and onions along with ketchup and mayo. The hot dog made its way onto the menu back in 2016, but you won't find any hot dogs on Burger King's menu these days. (You'll have to try these fast food hot dogs instead.)
Admittedly, not everyone was totally fond of the Whopper Dog when it first came out, perhaps because it feels a little lazy. Sure, throwing some basic toppings onto a hot dog might taste okay, but it doesn't necessarily feel that Whopper-y. But there were some who loved the dog and wish it would come back. One Redditor posted a photo of two Burger King hot dogs and wrote, "I miss you," with a crying emoji. Another Reddit user replied, "The whopper dog was the greatest!" For the kinds of people who adore both hot dogs and Whoppers, this dish sounds like it could've been a fast food dream come true.
Halloween Whopper
We love a seasonal fast food treat to make us feel festive, and the Halloween Whopper was a Burger King menu item that did just that while it was still around. That was back in 2015, when it was released during the fall holiday season. Arguably the most notable thing about this sandwich wasn't its toppings, but rather its signature black bun. Other than that, it included pretty standard burger ingredients, like lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, pickles, and cheese, along with the slightly strange addition of A1 steak sauce, which was apparently "baked into the bun," according to the ad.
Although that black burger bun doesn't exactly look super appealing, it apparently still inspires nostalgia in those who remember it clearly, considering that one Redditor asked when this sandwich was going to hit the menu ... 11 years after it first did. Another Reddit user posted an old ad of the menu item on the forum, and a commenter got excited that it was finally coming back before they realized it was actually posted in the r/forgottenfoods subreddit. A different Redditor, who initially made the same mistake, shared, "Some of y'all will never know how hype this was."
But maybe, just maybe, Burger King will deliver next Spooky Season. We're keeping our fingers crossed.
Angry Whopper
The Angry Whopper came onto the menu in a pretty iconic way. It first made its appearance in Europe in 2008, followed by the United States market in 2009. The sandwich was marketed alongside an app that would give you a free Angry Whopper ... if you deleted 10 friends off of Facebook. And if you remember Facebook this far back, then you know that unfriending at that point in social media history was kind of an insult.
So, what was so delicious about this sandwich that people were willing to become minor social pariahs for a free sandwich (until Facebook shut it down, at least)? It featured spicy onion petals, bacon, jalapeños, and its signature spicy Angry Sauce.
The Angry Whopper is a burger that actually could potentially come back again, considering it's made periodic reappearances over the years. And customers are definitely still craving it, with one Reddit user writing in r/BurgerKing that they can't wait for it to finally make its return to the menu. Another was a little more forceful with their approach, basically begging the chain to bring it back. And yet another Redditor took to the forum to express just how much they wanted the sandwich to come back, writing, "I don't know if it just spoke to my love language or what but I miss the angry whopper."
Chicken Whopper
As you can see from this list, there are countless ways to construct a Whopper. But if you look closely, you'll notice that they all have one very specific thing in common: They're made with beef. But what if you don't eat beef or just don't like it very much? Once upon a time, you could forgo the beef completely and still get your Whopper fix with Burger King's Chicken Whopper. It wasn't on the menu for that long, first appearing in 2002 before being removed from the lineup by 2005. It featured grilled chicken — not fried — for an ostensibly lighter option. It was briefly replaced by another sandwich, but for true Chicken Whopper fans, you can't outdo this classic.
Someone asked the r/TopSecretRecipes subreddit whether anyone had a recipe for this now-defunct sandwich, claiming it was the best chicken sandwich the chain ever featured on its menu. Another Redditor requested on r/BurgerKing that the restaurant bring the menu item back. Considering that the chain already has other chicken sandwich options on its menu, it somehow seems doubtful that the Chicken Whopper will come back again, but who really knows? Maybe we could be surprised.
