Sandwiches are my favorite food in the world, and I know I'm not alone. Americans have always seemed to love sandwiches, with 46% of participants in a Talker Research poll stating that they would be fine with only eating that dish for the rest of their lives. I keep the ingredients ready in my pantries and fridges, and see the dish as a staple. And it's not just a fad.

Sandwiches have a long history reaching back to the first century B.C., when Hillel the Elder served apples, nuts, wine, and spices between two matzoh slabs for Passover. But Elizabeth Leslie introduced Americans to sandwiches in 1837 in her cookbook, "Directions for Cookery," which included a recipe for ham sandwiches with butter and a smidgen of mustard. And when pre-sliced bread hit the market in the late 1920s, sandwiches became convenient for the working class and students looking for a portable meal. It's all been uphill from there.

Today, there are fantastic sandwicheries all over the country. So I've found the best small-town sandwich shops in every U.S. region for you to explore. Each spot sells consistently outstanding sandwiches with high-quality, fresh ingredients and great sides to go with them. To narrow it down, I turned to my own experience trying sandwiches around the nation, as well as locals — online forums, social media, review sites, and regional publications were all consulted to find the very best of them.

New England: Mae's Sandwich Shop (Marshfield, MA)

If you dream of beach sandwiches loaded with fresh cheeses, gorgeous saucework, and the most ruby-red and juiciest tomatoes you've ever seen on flawless bread, come straight here. This oceanside joint in Massachusetts slings both creative and more classic sandwiches, so there's something for every mood (and every diet — the vegetarian renditions are stunning and anything but afterthoughts).

All of the sandwiches at Mae's are piled high and stuffed to the brim, so make sure to come here hungry. Regulars love the Salad Sandwich, which comes with rainbow-stripe layers of crisp lettuce, Cabot sharp cheddar, crimson tomato slices, shredded carrots, thinly sliced apples, honey mustard, hummus, and plenty of dill atop focaccia. It's got every flavor note and is super refreshing. The Sunrise BLT, with its tomatoes, avocado, and applewood-smoked meat on multigrain, is also a big hit. And breakfast sandwiches are served all day — you'll want to try the ultra-savory Egg Sandwich "All Dressed," which comes gleaming with an over-medium egg, roasted shallot, salty Swiss cheese, umami-packed tomato jam, and fresh arugula on a buttery Pain D'Avignon brioche bun.

Don't skip dessert post-sandwich feast. The raspberry thumbprint cookies are highlights, made with homemade jam. But the blueberry oat scone and warm corn muffins feel classic New England and are equally worth ordering. Get everything to-go and eat it on the water!

Mid-Atlantic: Carissa's Bakery (The Hamptons, NY)

Carissa's Bakery isn't just one of the best coffee shops in Sag Harbor. It also happens to serve the best sandwiches in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country. The freshly baked bread is perfect every time, and they make for consistently incredible sandwiches. Plus, the interiors are really lovely, featuring airy spaces and plenty of natural light.

There's not a bad thing on the menu, so it's often the place that locals will send you if you ask for sandwich recommendations. With a few locations sprinkled around The Hamptons, this James Beard semifinalist New York gem has caught the attention of major foodies, from beach-goers to celebrity chef Ina Garten, who frequently gushes about the sandwiches on social media and her website.

The sandwiches here walk the line between French traditional and imaginative fusion fare. The lobster rolls are a huge draw when they're offered, featuring piles of buttery seafood hunks and a claw on top — edible flowers and herbs add color to the savory treat. And when tomatoes are in season, Carissa's serves a sandwich with heirloom varieties from local farms, toasted Pullman bread, and unctuous basil-balsamic mayonnaise. But for something hearty, order the roasted Brussels sprout sandwich. The earthy vegetables meet salty Vaca Rosa parmesan, preserved lemon aioli, and Fresno chili hot sauce atop baguette for a gorgeous balance of flavors. But whatever you order, just make sure to get some sweet pastries to sample post-sandwich.

Southeast: The Corner Store (Bowling Green, VA)

The Corner Store in Bowling Green, Virginia, is the best sandwich shop in the Southeast for its ultra-fresh produce, generous portions, and hearty bread. Its old-fashioned Southern snacks and bigger dishes are all equally tasty, providing a delicious sampling of the region's colorful foodway.

Reflective of Southeastern food culture, I love that the sandwiches at The Corner Store are simple but lovingly made. When it's in-season, the tomato sandwich is a must-order if you want a classically Southern pick with an important upgrade — slathered in Duke's mayonnaise and stuffed with super thick slices of local tomatoes, this sandwich is built on house-made focaccia instead of plain white bread (which is typically what is used on Southern tomato sandwiches). When it's not on the menu, order the stacked BLT, which The Corner Store calls a "perennial favorite." It's served on multigrain or potato bread with loads of bacon, Bibb lettuce, black pepper, and the obligatory mayonnaise and tomatoes. Order it sans bacon if you're vegetarian or just don't want the meat. There's also a pimento cheese sandwich that's absolutely packed with the eatery's house-made mixture (and you can add pickles if you want more of a bite, like I do).

The cold macaroni salad is a bright accompaniment to any of these and fits right into the Southeastern menu. But the crab bisque is a huge highlight that you should absolutely order if something hot strikes your fancy. Just save room for cookies.

Midwest: Herban Wolf Deli (Anoka, MN)

Inspired by Norse folklore, nature, and a deep love of sandwiches, Herban Wolf Deli is the best place in the Midwest to come for thoughtful panini concoctions. The sandwiches are all made with gloriously fresh ingredients like smoked cheeses and meats, house-made pesto, and rosemary Schiacciata. But you'll also find fantastic soups, local sodas, and Nordic potato salad (it's one of those Danish foods everyone should try).

The menu is filled with dishes named after Norse gods and concepts, and the lineup shifts every two weeks. Order the Woden if it's available. This vegetarian creation packs all the salt, umami, tanginess, and herbaceous goodness — the sourdough panini comes with smoked mozzarella, salty fontina and Swiss, sun-dried tomatoes, and house-crafted basil pesto. The Skadi is another panini star, and something to keep an eye out for if you love imaginative combinations. This one comes on Italian bread with hickory-smoked bacon, house-made chipotle sauce, pepper jack, and jalapeño macaroni and cheese for a noodle-stuffed sandwich you won't find anywhere. And it comes with strawberry jalapeño pepper jelly for a dip that brings a salty, spicy, and sugary balance.

If you consider a hot dog a sandwich, check out the rotating option. Just like pølse, one of the best Scandinavian dishes to try, the hot dogs here are completely decked out and piled high with savory toppings.

The Rocky Mountains: Hidden Peak Provisions Deli (Midway, UT)

Look, Utah foods can be great and not-so-great, but Hidden Peak Provisions Deli in Midway is an example of the former. If you want plenty of options, this is the place to come. The sandwich menu includes warm, pressed, cold classics, and vegetarian sections, so there will be something for you whatever your mood — this is also why I highly recommend it if you're dining with a group. There is truly something for anyone and everyone.

The roasted cauliflower banh mi is a major flavor bomb, and not to be missed if you even remotely enjoy cauliflower. It hits every flavor thanks to the other toppings like fermented carrots, herbs, daikon radish salad, and chili cashew cream. Served between halves of a hoagie roll, it's a massive and super bright bite that is amazing all year round (but in the colder months, the roasted cauliflower hits extra hard). And keep an eye out for the crispy eggplant parmesan special — this sandwich comes with salted tomatoes, house-crafted cracked pepper aioli, prosciutto di Parma, cheese, and perfectly grilled sourdough. It's a savory sandwich-lover's dream, and I love that it has plenty of crunch to make it absolutely craveable.

I appreciate that every sandwich here, whether you ordered a more traditional cold one or an imaginative panini, comes with three stellar side options. Pick from house-made chips, a small salad scoop, or a hot bowl of fabulous soup (but the latter does come with a little upcharge). The combinations are actually endless.

Southwest: Bordo: Fine Italian Goods (Marfa, TX)

Bordo is frequently cited as the best place to eat in Marfa, Texas. It's also the top spot to grab sandwiches in the Southwest. Situated in a 1930s-era mechanic shop along the main road, this Italian deli is retro in both atmosphere and food. And the chef behind the establishment, Michael Anthony Serva, has been nominated multiple times for a James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef (he was a semifinalist in 2025).

The sandwiches come on foundations of wood-fired, sesame seed-coated bread made with stone-milled flours. It's blistered and charred in the best way, and sturdy enough for even the wettest ingredients. There are no soggy sandwiches here, and they change based on the season. Expect toppings like marinated green tomatoes, Calabrian chili oil, hand-pulled mozzarella, and pistachio butter. The result is something that feels timeless, deeply Italian, and artisan. If the Secret Vegan sandwich is available, don't miss it — it comes with a vibrant mix of olives, shredded lettuce, dates, oranges, Calabrian chili, arugula, basil, broccolini, and lemon.

Whatever you order for your sandwich, remember to grab some seasonal gelato for dessert. Flavors range from butter pecan to banana split to peaches and cream, depending on when you come. Just note that the hours are pretty limited; Bordo is only open from Thursday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Pacific Coastal: Gere-A-Deli (Anacortes, WA)

Since 1981, Gere-A-Deli has been a staple institution in Anacortes, one of the best Pacific Coast small towns for foodies — the co-owner used to be mayor for years, and if you ask a local where to eat, they'll probably go off about the sandwiches that grace the menu. The breads are airy, the condiments are always unctuous and complementary, the proteins are perfectly paired, and the produce is hyper-fresh. I've traveled across the Lower 48, and haven't found anything even half as good as the masterpieces between bread at Gere-A-Deli. My family and I were regulars growing up, and I always take guests here when they visit.

Gere-a-Deli is by far the most underrated restaurant outside of Seattle, and it's completely worth the drive. Plus, it never gets old — at the time of writing, I've eaten here twice this week alone. And I'd eat here every day if I lived a little closer. As for the food itself, I've sampled the entire menu except the liverwurst, and everything is outstanding. But easily the best sandwich in the Pacific Northwest, and, in my opinion, the nation, is the Fresh Mozza. Tender mozzarella joins heaps of sprouts, red onions, juicy tomatoes, and lettuce atop toasted ciabatta. With a smattering of basil pesto mayonnaise and balsamic vinaigrette, it hits every note (even when you order it cheeseless, like I often do). I like to order mine with a triple serving of tomatoes, and a dill pickle on the side. But the scratch-made clam chowder, massive cookies, and salads are also phenomenal.

Methodology

For this article, I picked a sandwich shop for every region in the United States: New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Rocky Mountains, Southwest, and Pacific Coast. Each sandwich shop had to be located in a small town — population-wise, I had a soft ceiling of 25,000 residents. And to constitute a sandwich shop, it did not need to be a deli, but the eatery needed to either mainly serve sandwiches or make the dish a big highlight on the menu. In other words, I wasn't considering restaurants with one or two sandwiches on offer that don't get much buzz. They needed to be a dish that customers either come there for or leave talking about.

To narrow down the best small-town sandwich shops, I combined my personal experience with that of locals and customers in each of the aforementioned American regions. Online review sites (including Yelp, Tripadvisor, and Google Reviews), social media, online forums (like Reddit), and regional publications were assessed to establish the strongest contenders. Sandwicheries with high ratings and enthusiastic comments, frequently recommended by locals and chefs, were prioritized. Previous awards won were also considered.

I looked at both the sandwiches themselves and the atmosphere of the eatery. As for the latter, a welcoming vibe and an inclusive menu were my main points of interest. There also had to be vegetarian and/or pescatarian sandwich options. Otherwise, I looked for high-quality produce, fresh bread, artisan condiments, and delicious proteins. Finally, to be the best sandwich shop in its region, there had to be tasty accompaniments, like tangy pickle spears, local chips, or house-made soup.
