Gas stations are more than just places to fill your gas tank; they're hopeful establishments where you can stretch your cramped legs on a road trip or grab a quick bite before heading on your merry way to work. Although some people may associate gas station grub with poor quality or general unpleasantness, that's not always the case. You can find some scrumptious prepared food options at gas station chains that may have you finishing your snack and then questioning whether you should turn the car back around to get a second for later.

We browsed social media comments and previous Tasting Table reviews to identify the best foods to get based on taste and texture. Don't leave your next gas station pit stop hungry; these options can give you some ideas on how to fill up. You can spare yourself from underperforming, unpleasant gas station picks, too, by sticking with these top options instead.

QuikTrip pizza

It's rare to find something so widely beloved, but people absolutely rave about QuikTrip pizza. The gas station has personal sizes, as well as an extra-large one, which is convenient based on your car party size. Customers say the pizza is surprisingly good, noting that they like being able to order a whole pie through the chain's app. But others say they like the personal size, so it doesn't really matter which one you go for — though people call out the pepperoni as a top pick.

Customers like that the pizza seems fresh, with a crisp crust. If you happen to have any leftovers, your best bet is to reheat in the oven, as some say the microwave doesn't yield as tasty results. People have been eating them for years. One Redditor said that they ate the pies growing up and that it is "still my favorite pizza and I will die on the hill arguing that [it's] THE best pizza here in the states (at the least in terms of gas station pizza)." Other customers recommend getting the freshest one you can get your hands on for the superior flavor. The chain convenience store has around 1,250 locations spread across 23 states. Consider yourself lucky if you have access to one, and don't forget to grab a pizza before you leave.

7-Eleven chocolate chunk cookie

You can count on 7-Eleven for anything from store-brand hot foods to iconic chilly Slurpees. This gas station goes far beyond U.S. borders, with 86,000 stores in 19 countries. It might seem plain and unassuming, but the chocolate chunk cookie was the top pick in a previous ranking of 7-Eleven bakery items. Our writer enjoyed the balance of flavors and textures contained in the circular treat. It's sweet, as one can expect, but the vanilla offers dimension. The cookie dough doesn't overwhelm the amount of chocolate chips; instead, there's a drool-worthy ratio.

The crisp border of the sweet treat makes way for the chewy center. All these elements make this humble bakery item a sheer delight worth a late-night gas station run. Others point out there's a salty touch that could help it seem more well-rounded. Customers agree, though. "If [you're] looking for the goat of choc chip cookies, 7/11's choc chip is where it's at," said one Redditor. Those semi-sweet chocolate chunks make all the difference, and it's regarded as a solid chocolate cookie overall, not just from a gas station.

7-Eleven nachos

When you're traveling, it might not make sense to go to a sit-down Mexican restaurant for nachos. If you've held off on getting the dish from 7-Eleven, we encourage you to reconsider, given the number of customers who say it is their go-to from the chain. People tend to really enjoy the salty, crunchy, creamy combination, but it's made better with the chili served over top. Some even say that it might not look the most appetizing, but it delivers peak flavors every time — hey, at least they're honest.

The nachos have a customizable aspect that makes them even better; tailor them to your liking with toppings such as tomatoes, onions, cheese sauce, salsa, pickled jalapeños, and chili. Loading it up as desired is another alluring factor that keeps customers coming back. Some like to add cheese at the bottom and then layer it in for more gooeyness, while others like to keep things separate for a better crunch. You can utterly load the container with a couple of things, like cheese sauce and chili, or have a more colorful approach. Have fun with it and make it how you like it.

Casey's General Store Taco pizza

Forget about pizza basics like pepperoni or, heck, even the usual tomato sauce. How about a taco-inspired 'za instead? Our writer ranked the Taco pizza as Casey's General Store's best specialty pizza. The gas station has around 2,900 stores in 19 states and is well-known for its pies. The fantastic taco-inspired creation features refried beans and salsa in place of tomato sauce, resulting in a unique, savory prepared food. There's a choice of beef or chicken, but it comes with gooey mozzarella cheese no matter what. The final touch is lettuce, diced tomatoes, a smidge of cheddar cheese, and some taco chips, which create a refreshing, crunchy dynamic.

Tasting Table's writer loved the salsa's complexity, the beef's spice, and the chips' corn flavor. That's to say everything pairs together to create a scrumptious option that doesn't look anything like a sad gas station dish you might be picturing. Fans consider it pretty dang delicious or mention that it reminds them of Taco Bell. While some consider Casey's as the best taco pizza you can get anywhere, dozens of people agree that the chain's pizza selection is top-notch; that means you don't have to go with the bean-laden pizza if you prefer something more traditional.

Buc-ee's Banana Pudding

To be fair, Buc-ee's has an enormous selection of great items, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding something marvelous. The biggest problem is actually narrowing down what to get. Luckily, the banana pudding is a top contender if you want something that hits sweet and creamy notes. The treat ranked second in a fierce lineup of popular Buc-ee's snacks. This prepared food combines everything you want in a good 'nana pudding. The combination of fresh slices of fruit and the rich pudding creates the right amount of fruity, creamy flavor. Customers share that the pudding is the first thing they reach for when they visit the gas station chain, or consistently recommend it to those looking for food suggestions.

It is even regarded as the most outstanding banana pudding one can get at any establishment, let alone a gas station. "Buc-ee's banana pudding easily s tier anyday," one person on Reddit commented, which is considered the highest ranking. People love it so much that they deem it a part of their tradition and even try to replicate it at home. If you follow a banana pudding recipe, you can whip it up in 40 minutes; however, traveling with it might not be feasible, so a superior gas station option is always welcome. The caveat is finding a Buc-ee's, as most locations are concentrated in Texas, though you can spot stores scattered from Arizona to Alabama.

Wawa Meatball Parmesan Sub

Multiple people agree that Wawa's Meatball Parmesan Hoagie is an elite option to get from the gas station chain — although people also seem to call it a sub and a sandwich. Tasting Table deemed it the best hoagie from the gas station, beating classics like ham or roast beef. The writer noted that the meatballs tasted homemade, while the sauce was nicely herb-forward — noteworthy compliments for gas station cuisine. The creation comes with pork and beef meatballs, parmesan, your choice of roll, cheese, and any optional toppings.

"It's spectacular as is," our writer noted, so you don't have to add anything at all. It doesn't hurt that the sandwich is tasty enough on its own, but you can follow ordering tips to make the most excellent Wawa Meatball Parmesan Sub, too. Try getting it toasted for added crunch to keep it from getting too soggy; that way you can still appreciate the flavors of the hoagie. "I could not have made it better myself," said one Facebook reviewer. They also explained that it was delicious and they couldn't wait to visit again. Thankfully, there are around 1,100 Wawa locations across 10 states and Washington, D.C., so you have a better chance of finding a Wawa than a Buc-ee's.

Maverick Yogurt Berry Parfait

When you think of gas station food, things like hot dogs and pizza might be the first things that come to mind. But you can get a pretty mean yogurt parfait too. Maverick's Yogurt Berry Parfait is the best food item you can get from the gas station, according to our writer who tested over a dozen items. It was loved because it's flavorful and fresh, with a great balance of textures. There's the sweet, creamy yogurt and pieces of fruit to offer contrast and a bit of zing. Then the granola brings a fantastic crunch, made better since it is stored in a separate area — no soggy granola here.

Surprisingly, it's not overloaded with sweetness, as the granola is only lightly sweetened and has a pleasant almond nuttiness from almonds and almond extract. The berry trio of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries is pretty impressive for a gas station prepared food as well. Some stores even show it as a top seller at certain locations. The cheesecake version of the parfait also comes highly recommended. Make a pit stop at one of Maverick's 800 locations in 20 states to get your parfait.

GetGo Pizzeria Meatball Melt

Though you can get a variety of sandwiches at GetGo Cafe + Market, you should make the Pizzeria Meatball Melt your first pick. It was the No. 1 choice of our writer in a past GetGo Cafe subs taste test; they deemed it akin to a pizza-sub hybrid, thanks to the addition of pepperoni (a liberal amount of it at that). The meatballs were juicy, and the cheese had just the right amount of richness, offering a creamy touch to the savory pepperoni.

"I'm in love with this sandwich," said one Facebook user on a post introducing the sandwich to the world back in 2021; others shouted it out as looking pretty delicious and that they wanted to try it. If you're not in the mood for a meatball sub, though, the Italian was also highly ranked, as the second-place pick. Though there are over 200 GetGo locations, only about half have the Cafe + Market section; that means your chances of biting into the Pizzaria Meatball Melt are a little harder than some other gas station options, but totally worthwhile.

Sheetz Salted Pretzel

A pretzel, really? It might seem like a basic mall food, but you'll want to plan a pit stop around the highly recommended Salted Pretzel from Sheetz. This gas station chain has over 800 stores, and one of the best aspects is that it's open year-round, no days off, around the clock. This makes it an alluring option for those wee hours in the morning when most other places are closed. This gas station pretzel might call to you any time of day since people consider it the top-tier pretzel of all time; it even took the highest spot in a ranking of popular Sheetz menu items.

The writer shared that it was surprisingly spectacular, with a soft texture that made it pleasant to eat. The sheer amount of salt gives it a flavor pop, but the cheese sauce serves to add creaminess to the savory notes. If you're not a fan of cheese, add some favor by dunking it in mustard instead. But the great news is you can pick anything from dark chocolate sauce to Cinnabon cream cheese frosting, so it's a personal call if you want to lean into the sweet side. Other customers rave about the food item, giving it an 11 out of 10, and calling out its salty flavor and doughy texture.

Methodology

We compiled our final list of top gas station prepared foods to purchase based on online reviews from places like Reddit and Facebook, as well as previously published reviews from Tasting Table. In the latter, our writers ranked the particular food very highly — either first or second. Every item needed high praise from more than one person.

We wanted to highlight a range of options and gas stations, so we made sure to limit a gas station to two top foods, if that. This selection includes items that are hot, cold, sweet, and savory. Rather than bulk up the list with more items, we pared it down so it's short, but potent, featuring widely appreciated and raved-about products.
