Of course, the chain's Japanese snacks are the most coveted, but even the sandwiches available at locations in the U.S. taste pretty solid. But what about 7-Eleven's bakery section? After all, you might want something sweet to pair with your bitter gas station coffee.

I headed to my local 7-Elevens to pick up some bakery items, ranging from donuts to muffins, and ranked them from worst to best, based on my personal sense of taste. Both texture and flavor were major considerations here — I looked for bakery foods that felt soft and tasted fresh, with sweetness levels that weren't too intense or unbalanced.

Ultimately, you have to keep your expectations in check when it comes to gas station baked goods. As much as I can get down with the occasional 7-Eleven meal, it's not like you're grabbing food at a local, small-town bakery where everything is homemade. But perhaps this ranking can guide you toward the gas station bakery items you can enjoy the most, whether you're on a cross-country road trip or just making a quick stop on the way to work.

I wouldn't have guessed that 7-Eleven would carry apple fritters in its bakery lineup, but I was pleasantly surprised to see one in the donut case at my local store. When done well, apple fritters can be downright delicious (particularly when you make a homemade version). However, 7-Eleven's apple fritter was by far my least favorite of the entire lineup. The texture is decent, with a softness and airiness that's pleasant. Unfortunately, though, I found the glaze on this donut a bit too thick and sweet for my liking. I don't think you should go out of your way for this, but it's fine for a gas station breakfast.

In my opinion, brownies are one of the most elite chocolate desserts of all time, so I've had my fair share of homemade varieties and store-bought ones. It shouldn't come as a surprise that 7-Eleven's fudge brownies aren't exactly the best I've ever had — a plastic-wrapped brownie will never taste as good as one that's just come out of the oven. However, for a convenience store brownie, this one is pretty good with a moist base. I would like to see a bit more richness here, since the texture was a bit more dried-out than I wanted. It's better than I thought it would be, though.

The best thing about this brownie is that it's studded with a ton of chocolate chips. You won't just find one here or there as you work your way through the treat. Rather, you get several in every bite, which offers a much more interesting texture than a plain brownie.

Luckily, you can get your hands on one from 7-Eleven. I don't think 7-Eleven's take on this donut style is the best around, and you'll probably get a better Boston cream from a dedicated donut shop. Still, though, I really enjoyed this convenience store selection.

I'd prefer more cream in the donut's filling, but the flavor is good. It's on the smaller end of the donut spectrum, but considering how rich this flavor tends to be, I don't think that's a bad thing.

This "bread" (which really presents as more of a cake) is supremely fluffy, with an airiness I haven't found in many other desserts (at gas station convenience stores or beyond). At the same time, it's quite moist. These two qualities coming together in a single pastry is a recipe for deliciousness.

On the flavor front, this is definitely one of the subtler options that appear on this list. However, I like that — the balanced sweetness of this treat makes it a lot more approachable than most of the other sugar bombs that rank lower here. It's still quite sweet, but you can still appreciate the slightly milky, creamy flavor in the bread.

If I were specifically looking for something sweet to pair with my gas station coffee, I'd choose this Cheese Cake Bread. You don't really need anything else to balance the flavor to enjoy it since it doesn't pack the same overpowering sweetness as a lot of other 7-Eleven options.

Although this is a pretty sweet treat, I don't think it's unbalanced. There's a touch of vanilla flavor, which adds some complexity. Plus, the ratio of chocolate chunks to cookie dough is ideal, which further contributes to the pleasantly chewy but soft texture.

I don't think you need to go out of your way to seek out bakery items from 7-Eleven. Most of them are about convenience, not about being as absolutely delicious as possible. But the store's chocolate chunk cookie might be an exception. It's worth a try the next time you shop at 7-Eleven.
