The 5 Best Gas Station Foods We've Eaten In 2026 So Far

Gas station food has definitely evolved since the days when choices essentially amounted to a bag of chips, a candy bar, or something of questionable age and content spinning beneath a heat lamp. Convenience stores and travel centers now fiercely compete for hungry customers. Some have even become destinations in their own right, including the fan fave Buc-ee's, which is expanding into at least six more states by 2028. 

In a quest to find the tastiest offerings for weary road warriors or pop-in locals feeling peckish, Tasting Table put several writers to work tasting their ways through gas station menus and ranking items based on firsthand experience. As a result, we're now highlighting here the five best gas station foods we've eaten in 2026 so far — and the list is deliciously all over the place. 

One is a loaded meatball sandwich, another a yogurt and fruit parfait, and two come from 7-Eleven's sweet side. Buc-ee's also makes a significant presence with a pecan panoply that easily soars above a mountain of sampled desserts. The top-raters don't have much in common except one important thing: When tasted against the competition, these were the foods with the most admirable attributes, whether by taste, ingredients, presentation, authenticity, or just plain deliciousness. 

Buc-ee's may be a gas station, but it wears a persona of pure fun when it comes to eating and shopping. From the company's signature Beaver nuggets to barbecue brisket sandwiches, snacks, desserts, and loads more, it's an impressive feat to rise about the foodie fray and land on a best-of ranking. But that's exactly what happened when Tasting Table writer Kyle Grace Trinidad reviewed 20 Buc-ee's desserts, ultimately placing Buc-ee's Small Batch Pecan Trio firmly in top-slot position.

For each sampled Buc-ee's dessert, Trinidad judged them on things like flavor, texture, and practicality on road trips. The Small Batch Pecan Trio impressively beat every cookie, pie cup, pudding, brownie, and ice cream sandwich in the 20-item lineup, despite also being the most expensive. The package cradles three types of pecans, and "each variety of pecan is a stand-alone stunner," says Trinidad. "You can really taste the rich honey flavor in the glazed pecans, and the white- and milk chocolate-covered nuts offer both an incredible taste and perfectly fudgy texture."

They also scored points for being genuinely road-trip-friendly, as long as you don't leave them in a hot car. Trinidad calls them "some of the best no-fuss driving while snacking on this list," while also elevating them to potential gift-giving status. "Beyond being a delectable road dessert," she says, "this also travels well as a gourmet gift for family — if you can bear sharing it, that is."

Popping into 7-Eleven isn't everyone's first instinct when craving a luscious bowl of ice cream — but there's reason to bypass preconceptions at this gas station and convenience store chain. In a ranked list of eight 7-Eleven ice cream flavors, Tasting Table writer Katie Mach purchased every 7-Select variety of ice cream she could find, then judged them on things like flavor, texture, mix-ins, and whether she'd actually buy them again. The brand's Mint Cookies 'N Cream came out on top, and Mach ultimately said she'd choose it over many artisanal options.

That's pretty remarkable praise for a pint of ice cream sharing space with Slurpees and gas-station snacks. Mach admits to a built-in fondness for mint-and-chocolate desserts, but that didn't guarantee this one a win — in fact, it likely raised the bar. In the end, what earned it first place was how well each ingredient delivered the magic. "The ripples of fudge were bountiful and very thick, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and strong chocolate flavor," noted Mach. "The cookie pieces varied in size from crumbs to full-on chunks, creating a textural medley."

More importantly, the namesake mint in this ice cream didn't overpower everything else. "The mint ice cream base was the right balance of mint; not too sharp or sweet," according to Mach, who noted this 7-Eleven pint "is no revelation in the ice cream world, and it's not an innovation of flavors, textures, or ingredients." But it does everything very well, and she considers it one of the best she's had. 

The biggest surprise on this list may also be one of the healthiest, at least comparatively speaking.  Tasting Table writer Amy Bell sampled and ranked 14 Food Items At Maverik Gas Station, testing a lineup that included burgers, burritos, pizza, sandwiches, and plenty of other quick-stop style foods. But the item she liked most was Maverik's simple Yogurt Berry Parfait.

It wasn't something Bell even expected to finish when she started tasting it. Instead, what was meant to be a quick sample turned into her eating the whole parfait, and she later found herself considering returning to buy another one. She also felt it was worth the mid-range price, especially when compared to some of Maverik's heavier food choices. What ultimately made the parfait stand out was how each component held its own. "Every part of this parfait is delicious, from the yogurt and fruit to the granola."

Bell considered the yogurt smooth and gently sweet instead of overly tart, with the blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries tasting fresh. She especially liked the granola (which comes in it's own container), describing it as good enough to eat on its own, having a delightful almond flavor without being overly sweetened. "I dare say this is the best berry parfait I've ever had," says Bell, "and I'll definitely be getting it again."

GetGo's made-to-order sandwich menu gives travelers a lot more to consider than stereotypical gas-station hot dogs eternally rotating on warm metal cylinders. Tasting Table writer Megan Hageman tried some of the chain's popular sandwich options for a ranked list of 10 GetGo Cafe Subs, ranging from cold deli sandwiches to cheesesteaks and chicken Parmesan. Her unexpected winner was the Pizzeria Meatball Melt.

Calling it a standard meatball sub doesn't quite explain what's going on with this one, which is essentially a cross between a meatball melt and a pepperoni pizza melt. "So you get two for the price of one," notes Hageman. "Not to mention, more meat overall — I can't really complain about that." Four hefty meatballs get packed into the roll along with pepperoni, marinara, mozzarella, and provolone, resulting in a meal that's more than a little messy. Hageman calls it "an accident waiting to happen if you choose to eat it on the go." But the flavors may be worth a potential sauce stain.  

The meatballs were the biggest surprise. Instead of tasting like generic frozen versions, they were juicy, flavorful, and substantial enough for a high-quality sandwich. The same goes for the cheese and the pepperonis, according to Hageman. "Each bite also came with a satisfying ooey-gooey cheese pull, and the pepperonis gave the sandwich an added boost of savoriness." She does note that the marinara was a little lackluster, but not a dealbreaker.

Chocolate chip cookies are so common (and well loved) that it takes a lot to stand out. That's likely why Tasting Table writer Samantha Maxwell didn't expect much from 7-Eleven's Chocolate Chunk Cookie when testing it for a ranked list of eight 7-Eleven Bakery Items. On appearance alone, it seemed like one of the least interesting choices, but after one taste, that assumption disappeared. 

Texture did most of the convincing on this one, with Maxwell calling it out of this world. "I'm not sure how 7-Eleven's bakery achieves such a decadent, chewy texture in a cookie that's not straight out of the oven, but it absolutely does," she says, noting how the center is fall-apart soft, while the crispy exterior keeps everything intact. The flavor also avoided one of the problems that hurt other lower-ranked 7-Eleven baked goods on the list: too much sugar. Though undeniably sweet, the cookies was still balanced, helped by a touch of vanilla and a good proportion of chocolate chunks to dough. 

Maxwell didn't come away believing that every 7-Eleven bakery item deserved a special trip. Convenience is still the main selling point for most of the lineup — but the Chocolate Chunk Cookie might be the exception, in her opinion. As she noted at the onset, "Imagine my surprise (then) when I opened the package only to discover that 7-Eleven's chocolate chunk cookies are some of the best in the game."
