Del Taco is not the second fiddle player it once was to other fast food chains. It was even named USA Today's No. 1 Best Fast Food Restaurant in its 2026 Readers Choice Awards. Among several things that were highlighted, Del Taco's dedicated breakfast menu made the list. How the tables have turned, because just a year prior, even we wondered if Del Taco's breakfast menu was any good. It was sort of odd that we even had to question it, because if you think about it, how could egg and cheese-stuffed burritos and tacos ever be a bad thing?

And, when you add bacon and carne asada to the mix, it can only get more delicious. Those are just Del Taco's standard breakfast builds, too, which only scratch the savory surface of what's possible. There are, in fact, upgrades that can skyrocket your usual go-to, from breakfast burritos packed with crinkle cut fries to tacos loaded with hash browns. You can even to put an eggy twist on classic burritos. Here are the absolute best Del Taco breakfast upgrades worth ordering.

Max out your breakfast burrito with double the ingredients

Del Taco offers a variety of breakfast burrito options, which all feature scrambled eggs, freshly-grated cheddar, and red sauce, with the added choice of crispy bacon or carne asada. One of the highlights of starting your day with Del Taco is the ability to customize your burrito however you like. For example, if you happen to wake up with a giant-sized appetite — no problemo — just upgrade your burrito with double the ingredients.

There are three sections dedicated to customization: Flavor Ups, Customize, and Add Ons. The Customize section is where you can add extra scrambled eggs for a little over a dollar, and for a few cents more, additional red sauce and cheddar cheese. The Add Ons section is where you'll find extra bacon, but only for around $1 more. Unfortunately, the website doesn't offer carne asada as an option, but you should be able to request it in person.

Recreate the discontinued fan-favorite Macho Breakfast Burrito

The Macho Combo Burrito dates all the way back to 1991, and when it hit the scene, it was a huge success. Weighing in at over a pound, it was considered a larger-than-usual burrito for a fast food chain at the time, especially compared to what you'd find at Taco Bell. It featured beef and beans, and cost just $2.99. We're unsure if it was released at the same time or after, but there was also a breakfast version of this menu item called the Macho Breakfast Burrito, which came with scrambled eggs, bacon, beans, lettuce, and both red and green sauces.

Del Taco no longer offers either of these weighty burritos as main menu items, but thanks to someone on Reddit, you can still experience what the Macho Breakfast Burrito was like. To recreate it is pretty simple: just order a Bacon Breakfast Burrito, and add beans for around $1, and lettuce and green sauce for about another dollar.

Put a stoner spin on your breakfast burrito with extra sauce and fries

This beloved secret menu item was apparently created specifically for munchies. Dubbed The Stoner Burrito, it's one of several ordering tips for the hands-down best Del Taco burrito. A Stoner Burrito is basically a bean and cheese burrito stuffed with crinkle cut fries, secret sauce, and your choice of green or red sauce. Now, whether you love Cheech and Chong or not, this upgrade will definitely cure your munchies. Except here, we're going to show you how to put a breakfast spin on it.

The best part is that you don't have to order the fries separately. To make it, simply select a breakfast burrito with red or green sauce and hit the Add Ons section for fries and secret sauce. You'll only spend a little over a dollar, which makes this easy hack all the more sweeter. It's worth noting, however, that The Stoner Burrito is not to be confused with the chain's "Go Bold" option, which also involves crinkle cut fries and secret sauce. We'll be covering that one next.

Make breakfast burritos more filling with 'Go Bold' option

Del Taco may not be the first place that comes to mind when you wake up in the morning, but in our opinion, it's a fast food chain with seriously underrated breakfast. We briefly mentioned the chain's "Go Bold" option, which is similar to The Stoner Burrito, but instead of crinkle cut fries with red sauce or green sauce, it consists of fries and secret sauce. For a little more than $1, customers can "Go Bold" with any burrito on the menu via the Flavor Up section, which of course, includes breakfast burritos and tacos.

While fries are always a welcome addition, the highlight of this savory upgrade is Del Taco's secret sauce. The chain, of course, keeps the ingredients under wraps, but according to fans, it tastes somewhere between flavored mayonnaise and ranch dressing with a citrusy kick. It pairs well with the green and red sauces, and when combined with scrambled eggs, cheese, and fries, will take your breakfast to a new level of filling flavor.

Stuff Breakfast Rollers with beans and green sauce

Tacos and burritos are designed to be enjoyed on-the-go. But, Del Taco makes mobile grubbing even easier with its Breakfast Rollers. Compact and crave-worthy, they're around half the size of regular breakfast burritos, and like half the price. Despite being petite, Del Taco still lets you stuff them with however many ingredients you'd like. Of course, the laws of physics will keep you from overdoing it.

As far as what to add to Breakfast Rollers, we looked to Reddit for advice, and "Breakfast rollers with beans and green salsa," was what one person recommended. The chain's refried beans are a certified fan-favorite, and if you like a little spice, the green sauce delivers a subtle kick. Both are also the main ingredients in what we consider Del Taco's best menu item, the bean and cheese burrito with green sauce. So, just imagine how delicious they'd taste inside of a Breakfast Roller.

Give a classic burrito a bacon and egg makeover

The great thing about Del Taco is that it still serves lunch during breakfast hours. Of course, that means that any of the popular items at Del Taco can receive a breakfast makeover. Picture a bean and cheese burrito loaded with scrambled eggs and bacon — you see what we're getting at? Making this upgrade a reality is easy peasy, just order the bacon breakfast burrito and add beans to it.

However, you can take this upgrade to the next level if you head into an actual location. Classic menu items like the Del Beef Burrito — which comes with seasoned beef, house-grated cheddar, and red sauce — and the Del Classic Burrito — with grilled chicken, cheddar, lettuce, secret sauce, and diced tomatoes — are just asking to be stuffed with bacon and eggs. And, since extra bacon and scrambled eggs both only cost around $1 on the website, you'll be getting a lot of bang for your breakfast buck.

Load breakfast items with hash browns

For some reason or another, Del Taco does not offer hash browns as an option in its customization section. But, it does have them on the breakfast menu as a side item, and includes them as part of breakfast meals. In other words, if you woke up one day with a hankering for hash brown-stuffed tacos or burritos, you'd have to pull up to your local Del Taco and request it in-person. We plucked the idea from a Reddit user, who suggested adding them to a breakfast bacon burrito as a replacement for a discontinued item called the Breakfast Toasted Wrap.

You don't have to stop at burritos, though. You can give breakfast tacos a hash brown upgrade, too. Simply order one of the taco meals, which includes two Big Fat Tacos, hash browns, and a drink, and add them yourself. Del Taco also lets you customize each taco individually, so you can try red sauce in one, and the green sauce in another.

Ask your server to make breakfast burritos extra toasty

The upgrades we've covered so far have involved adding ingredients to menu items. And while that'll always be a surefire way to spruce up your sunrise, we have another upgrade for those of you who prefer to keep things simple. The option is only available online for quesadillas, so if you want it for a burrito, you need to request it in-person. Next time you kick your day off with Del Taco, ask the server to make your burrito well-done, which is another way of asking for it to be toasted.

If you can have quesadillas toasted, then you should be able to have any burrito toasted. As simple as it sounds, this upgrade makes a big difference. Del Taco burritos are usually soft and somewhat limp, but when you toast them, it gives the tortilla a crunchier consistency and toasted flavor that pairs deliciously with the fillings.

Make your own breakfast-style quesadilla

Del Taco's breakfast menu has undergone lots of changes in the last few years. According to customers on Reddit, the chain removed several menu items in 2024, including fan-favorites like the hash brown tacos, the aforementioned Breakfast Toasted Wrap, and a breakfast quesadilla. One rumor is that the quesadilla was removed due to its calorie count, but we couldn't find any official information to confirm that. Gossip aside, the discontinued fan-favorite apparently featured eggs, bacon, green chilis, and red sauce.

The good news is that you can still experience it. Someone on Facebook provided a rundown on how, writing, "Bacon and Egg Quesadilla. Dropped from menu a few years back. Now ask for Cheddar Quesadilla, no green sauce, add bacon add egg. Problem solved. Yummm." Along with Cheddar Quesadillas, Del Taco has Spicy Jack Quesadillas that can be upgraded with eggs and bacon, too. The chain even has a Spicy Jack Chicken Quesadilla, if you're looking for a tasty protein boost with a fiery kick. But, each of these upgrades will have to be made at one of the chain's locations.
