2026's Best New Cabernet Sauvignons So Far
Cabernet sauvignon is one of the most popular varieties of red wine produced today. Originating in Bordeaux, France, this international favorite is versatile and pairs well with a wide range of dishes, including French, Italian, and classic American fare, such as burgers, hot dogs, grilled vegetables, and all types of barbecues. It is one of the best types of red wine for pairing with food, thanks to its combination of juicy black fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and fresh acidity. While its origin is France, the grape thrives in wine regions worldwide, most notably Napa Valley, California.
This year, wineries throughout the region and across the globe have released dozens of new offerings showcasing the grape variety. These 2026 releases are mostly 2022 or 2023 vintages. Wineries will typically age cabernet sauvignon in French or American oak barrels or with wood chips, followed by a short or long stint in the bottle, giving it time to round out its character prior to release. This ensures the wine is ready for consumption when it hits the market.
I am a Certified Sommelier, wine writer, and reviewer with over 20 years of experience, and I taste hundreds of new wines each year. I have narrowed down the best of 2026 based on my personal experience with each selection. In a sea of options, these bright shining stars offer a range of styles and include everything from quality entry-level products to high-end options with exceptional character.
2023 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon
In 1976, a competition in France pitted up-and-coming California wines against some of the finest selections of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Napa and Sonoma were still emerging wine regions at the time, with little notoriety, particularly internationally. That year, the blind tasting, judged by some of France's top critics and producers, would change Napa's course of history. The top wines selected at the now-infamous Judgment of Paris were the Chardonnay from Napa's Chateau Montelena, and the 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, crafted by esteemed winemaker Warren Winiarski. The S.L.V. Cabernet ranked above prestigious First Growth Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion. The results changed how consumers viewed New World wines and earned Napa a permanent spot on the international stage.
Today, Napa Valley produces some of the world's finest cabernet sauvignon wines. Earlier this year, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars released its 2023 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon on the 50th anniversary of the tasting event. Planted in 1970, the wine is from the estate's Stag's Leap Vineyard, with volcanic soils that lend complexity, structure, and a mineral-rich core. Inky and concentrated, the wine shows black fruit, warm baking spices, toasted cedar, pencil lead, leather, and dark chocolate, all mingling effortlessly on the palate. Chewy, mouthwatering tannic astringency keeps you engaged, reflecting the essence of Napa quality.
2023 BRION Sleeping Lady Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
In the heart of Napa Valley, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, Yountville's Sleeping Lady Vineyard is home to some of the region's most expressive cabernet sauvignon vines, and it is the home of BRION Winery. Located in the valley, with gravely, alluvial soils, the vines have grown on this historic site since the 1860s. Today, the sustainably managed grapes contribute to one of BRION Winery's single-vineyard cabernet sauvignon wines. With esteemed, non-interventionist winemaker Julien Fayard at the helm of production, the vineyard to speaks through the wine.
BRION Sleeping Lady Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with perfumed notes of blackberry, brûléed cherry, cassis, wild herbs, and tobacco, along with a mineral-rich graphite note. The palate shows structured concentration, depth, and refinement, with polished elegance and balance. At 14.6% alcohol, this bold wine is delicious now. However, allowing a few additional years of bottle aging will make the wine sing. Its tannic structure and concentration ensure it will age nicely for years to come.
Founder Brion Wise believes producing site-specific, single-vineyard wines for BRION Wines tells the true story of Napa Valley. Napa's terroir is diverse, with the varying soil types, slopes, sun exposure, and microclimates. Crafting single-vineyard wines reveals Napa's uniqueness and ties the wine to the land.
2023 Vina Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon
For the past 30+ years, Viña Don Melchor has quietly changed the game for Chilean wines by revealing terroir-driven quality often missing from some of the country's expressions. For years, Chile was known for producing vast quantities of bang for the buck wines. While the quality was good and prices affordable, consumers had little information or clear guidance on what made Chilean wine different from others. Enter Vina Don Melchor. Located in the Puente Alto district on the northern side of the Maipo River, the winery crafts its selections to reveal the individual qualities of each distinct lot on its estate.
The prestigious wine publication, Wine Spectator, named the 2021 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon its 2024 Wine of the Year. The latest 2023 release is equally exceptional, showing authenticity, intensity, and a clear sense of place, with purity, power, and grace. The winery's namesake, Don Melchor Concha y Toro, planted his first vineyard in Pirque in the Maipo Valley from cuttings brought from France. Today, the winery crafts its selections with respect for the land by understanding the role of stewardship and by encouraging biodiversity. Since its first vintage in 1987, Don Melchor has delivered the country's premium cabernet sauvignon.
2023 Mt. Brave Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
The mountainous, high-elevation landscape of Mount Veeder is nestled between Napa on one side and Sonoma on the other. This Napa Valley sub-region is known for crafting powerful cabernet sauvignons with grit and character. Here, Mt. Brave celebrates the history of the region's original inhabitants and the adventurous pioneers who came after.
The Mt. Brave vineyard sits above the fog line, at elevations of 1,400 to 1,800 feet above sea level. Sunshine throughout the day ripens the fruit, ensuring full phenolic character, while moderate temperatures keep the acidity fresh and balanced. With the 2023 vintage's long growing season, cabernet sauvignon reached full development with ease. Rocky loam soil provides few nutrients, forcing struggling vines to dig deep into the earth to find water and food. As a result, fully mature grapes are small, dense, and concentrated, delivering fruit with complexity and power. Mount Veeder's steep slopes and thin soils are challenging to work, requiring much to be done by hand.
The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals dark fruit notes of brambleberry, black cherry, and currant, with mineral-intense layers of graphite and iron. This textural wine shows a rustic elegance with refined precision showcased by winemaker Chris Carpenter. With decades of crafting wines from mountain fruit, Carpenter has a propensity for allowing each of Napa's mountain regions to shine with individuality.
2023 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
If Washington State had an equivalent to Napa Valley's cult cabernet sauvignon wines, it would certainly be Quilceda Creek. Quilceda Creek's wines hail from Washington's Columbia Valley, primarily the Horse Heaven Hills and Red Mountain sub-appellations. The current winemaker Paul Golitzin carries on his father's drive and meticulous attention to detail in pursuit of perfection with the recently released 2023 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Quilceda Creek's wines often receive perfect 100-point scores from some of the most respected wine critics in the country. And 2023 was no different. Aged 22 months in new French oak, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Champoux and Mach One estate vineyards in Horse Heaven Hills. The key to Quilceda Creek's irresistible character is its combination of power and intensity with freshness and balance. While the wine is bold and brawny, it also shows elegance and finesse, with seamless precision.
The family-owned winery is committed to excellence and nothing less. Alex and Jeanette Golitzin founded the winery in 1978. Golitzin's wine roots run deep thanks to the influence of his uncle, one of America's most celebrated winemakers, André Tchelistcheff. His uncle's most influential advice was to make one wine and make it well. For Golitzin, that wine is this Cabernet Sauvignon — a refined American gem.
2022 Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was not the only Napa Valley wine to gain recognition at the Judgment of Paris. Freemark Abbey's 1972 Chardonnay and 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon both ranked in the top 10 in the overall tasting. Today, Freemark Abbey's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon remains equally enjoyable. The current release is a 2022 vintage that shows luscious, ripe fruit notes of blackberry compote, black cherry, and cassis, with generous acidity and moderate tannin. 20 months of aging in French oak lends toasted spice, dark chocolate, leather, and cedar notes.
The 2022 vintage was hot and dry, including a heat spike in the middle of the harvest that accelerated ripening. However, cool temperatures quickly followed, allowing fruit on the vine to finish developing slowly, balancing the flavors and ensuring overall freshness. The fruit for this wine was sourced throughout the region, including locations like Mt. Veeder, as well as valley fruit from loamy, alluvial soils from areas such as Oakville and Rutherford. The combination brings diverse textures and complexity to the well-structured and beautifully balanced wine.
2023 Col Solare Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
From the arid, high-elevation Col Solare estate vineyard of Washington State's Red Mountain appellation, Col Solare crafts its concentrated 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines here receive significant sunshine throughout the growing season, allowing fruit to develop full phenolic character with ease. Dry conditions require the plant's roots to dig deep to find water and nutrients, creating fruit with bold structure and complexity.
Cool evening temperatures help to preserve the wine's natural acidity, locking in freshness, while ensuring there is balance between the fruit, tannin, and acidity. Blue and black fruits flavors open in the wine, followed by crushed stone, dried herbs, forest floor, tobacco, and spice. 20 months of aging in new French oak barrels brings out the wine's toasty, spicy notes. These qualities make it a delicious pairing with the mushroom-stuffed roasted quail or beef Wellington with mushroom duxelles.
As part of Italy's Antinori family of wines, the winery released its inaugural vintage of Col Solare in 1995. Marchese Antinori initially worked in partnership with Chateau Ste. Michelle to create a winery that honors traditions while embracing modern innovation, and one that's driven by determination and an unyielding desire for excellence. In 2024, Antinori acquired full ownership, reaffirming its dedication to producing quality wines from the region.
2023 Aperture Cellars Estate Farrow Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma
From the steep hillside of the Farrow Ranch in Sonoma's Alexander Valley, Aperture Cellars crafts its impressive 2023 Farrow Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. Owner and winemaker Jesse Katz has been working on it since 2010. Over the years, he has created what is now a 75-acre estate vineyard. This Cabernet comes from the vineyard's steepest block, with south-facing vines planted in iron-rich, red, volcanic soils. These soils lend mineral intensity to the wine that's evident in graphite, chalk, and pencil shavings notes.
Hand-picked fruit is meticulously sorted within hours of harvest. It then undergoes two different fermentations at different temperatures. The technique creates complexity, while enhancing the character of the terroir. The wine is aged for 22 months in French oak and six months in concrete. It is not fined or filtered.
The result is a robust selection with weight, texture, and tension, layering black and blue fruits with black licorice, bitter chocolate, and toast. Upon release, the bold wine shows best after an hour of decanting and pairs well with a rich and fatty sous-vide ribeye. It will also continue to develop in the bottle for several years.
For Katz, making wine is the art he brings to life in every bottle. As a photographer's son, he learned early on that there are many forms of art. The important thing is to share it.
2024 Capensis Silene Cabernet Sauvignon
South African wine may fly under the radar for many, especially for anything beyond chenin blanc and its native pinotage. However, the history of wine began in the mid-1600s when European settlers arrived in the country. The country excels in producing quality wines from Bordeaux and Burgundian varieties. Today, cabernet sauvignon is the most common variety in the country's Stellenbosch region.
Capensis began by crafting world-class chardonnay wines from the Western Cape, while 2023 vintage was its first Cabernet Sauvignon release. This summer, the winery released the latest vintage, 2024 Capensis Silene Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch. With a generous palate, the wine shows the perfect balance of juicy blue and black fruit with savory spice, dark chocolate, and oak. With well-integrated tannins, enhanced by 14 months of aging in partially new French oak, the wine pairs well with a meaty pizza, Texas chili, or boerewors, a type of sausage that is a South African specialty.
2023 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
Few wines from Napa Valley are as extraordinary as Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. The Pritchard Hill vineyard's elevations up to 1,800 feet above sea level, grapes enjoy a long growing season with warm days and cool nights. The 2023 vintage was one of the region's cooler vintages in recent years, extending what is normally a long growing season on the mountain. Volcanic soils at high elevations create small-berried fruit that has highly concentrated flavors.
The resulting 2023 Cappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is structural, age-worthy, and evolved. Black and blue fruit flavors meld with earthy tobacco, leather, and stony mineral notes, showing depth and tension on the palate. While it is delicious upon release, it will continue to mature with a few years of bottle aging. This premium pairs well with meat dishes and bold flavors, such as a premium Japanese A5 Wagyu ribeye steak. The wine's tannic structure and earthy backbone will cut through the meat's fatty richness.
Almost 60 years ago, founders Donn and Molly Chappellet set out to make the finest wines from mountain fruit in Napa Valley, establishing their prestigious winery and vineyard estate on Pritchard Hill overlooking Napa's Oakville region within the Vaca mountain range. The Pritchard Hill vineyard has been dubbed the Grand Cru of Napa Valley. As stewards of the land, the Chappellets let the vineyard speak through its high-caliber wines.
2023 Merus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
We received a preview bottle of the 2023 Merus Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, set to be released in November 2026. And, I am so thrilled we did. Historically, this wine has sourced its cabernet fruit predominantly from the Coombsville sub-region of Napa.
Under the direction of winemaker Michael Beaulac, the 2022 vintage sources fruit from premium growers throughout the region, including grapes from Atlas Peak, Rutherford, Coombsville, and Calistoga. The combination creates a multi-dimensional wine with high-toned complexity, concentration, and structure. Beaulac ferments and ages each individual block of fruit separately for 31 months in new French oak barrels. After aging, Beaulac blends the wine to create a unique expression specific to each vintage, highlighting the best of the year.
Bold, dense, and inky, the wine melds blackberry compote, cassis, and black licorice with leather, dust, toasted spice, and tobacco. Using fruit from throughout the region, including cooler and warmer areas of Napa, ensures optimal ripeness while showing natural freshness and a structured tannic backbone. This complex wine is best enjoyed over a hearty meal, such as red wine-braised short ribs.
2022 French Flair Le Classique Bordeaux Rouge
The Left Bank of Bordeaux specializes in cabernet sauvignon. Although almost most red Bordeaux wines are blends, these cabernet-dominant blends deliver full-bodied character, age-worthy structure, and tannic complexity, all desirable attributes in wines crafted from the variety. The 2022 French Flair Le Classique Bordeaux Rouge from L'Atelier Bertrand highlights these qualities in its newly released blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot.
The wine opens with layers of ripe blackberries, black cherries, dark chocolate, and currants, mingling with soft herbal, earthy notes and fresh cedar. The palate is balanced and soft, thanks in part to the merlot's influence, while maintaining the cabernet sauvignon's structure. With smooth, velvety tannin and balanced acidity, the wine pairs well with classic French dishes, such as a mushroom-rich beef stroganoff or slow-simmered duck cassoulet.
This affordable selection isn't the most complex of this year's new releases. However, by design, the wines serve as a gateway to understanding French wines, appealing to seasoned wine lovers and novices alike. With acclaimed winemaker Gérard Bertrand leading the L'Atelier Bertrand team, the new French Flair portfolio aims to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of various French regions through expressive, authentic, and approachable selections.
2024 Hope Family Wines Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon
Hope Family Wines 2024 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon is the youngest vintage on the list released this year. Though there is no required release date, wineries often hold red wines in the cellars for several months or years after bottling, helping round out the overall character. Hope Family opted to release its 2024 shortly after creating the blend in January 2026. The wine delivers a fruit-forward cabernet sauvignon from Paso Robles, California.
The 2024 season was slow and steady in Paso Robles, giving the fruit a long growth season. September heat waves helped the fruit reach its final maturity, delivering a cabernet sauvignon with juicy layers of blackberry, cherry cordial, and black raspberry. Aging the wine for 17 months in French oak added subtle earthy notes of tobacco, leather, and spice, creating a wine that pairs well with approachable fare such as Italian sausages, grilled burgers, or smoked brisket.
Methodology
To produce this list of best new cabernet sauvignon wines released in 2026, I referenced a range of wines I have tasted so far this year from national and international producers. Each featured wine delivers more than expected, showcasing regional terroir, and each is delicious upon release. They pair with rich meat and vegetables dishes and will bottle age nicely. Every label displays its provenance beautifully.
