If you're shopping on a budget this holiday season but still want to have Halloween candy on hand for trick-or-treaters, both Dollar General and Dollar Tree have plenty of options. When comparing the two stores to help our readers determine which one they should shop at this year, we considered variety and cost by comparing per-piece pricing and the potential for coupons or discounts. The store that ended up being the better value in almost every way is Dollar General.

While there are many chocolate bars that make Dollar Tree worth a visit, its candy selection isn't as extensive as what you'll find at Dollar General. The store's website shows less than 30 Halloween-specific candy products and many are not from name brands. If it isn't important to you that the candy be holiday-themed and buying a name brand isn't a priority, you can find a few hundred different candy items, but many are not individually wrapped and may not be suitable for handing out to trick-or-treaters.

In addition to a lack of festive confectionary options, Dollar Tree isn't as competitive in price when compared to Dollar General, especially if you're looking for cheaper Halloween candy and last-minute discounts. One of the largest packages of candy available on Dollar Tree's website is a 30-count package of Snickers Minis which costs $6, meaning you would be paying $0.20 per piece.

Dollar General has a better selection of Halloween Candy at cheaper bulk prices

By contrast, Dollar General offers 75 different types of Halloween-themed candy and hundreds of varieties of non-seasonal candy and gum. Compared to Dollar Tree, Dollar General sells a wider variety of affordable bulk options, like our favorite Hershey's Halloween candies of 2026. Plus, you can use digital coupons to save even more money. Dollar Tree accepts manufacturer coupons in stores, but you can't use them online and seasonal items typically do not go on sale until after the holiday.

The largest Halloween candy variety packs sold at Dollar General are 110-piece bags of mini candy bars that sell for $16 but you can use the store's digital coupon to bring the cost down to just $14, or about $0.13 per piece. If that sound like too much candy, there's a 65-piece bag of assorted candy minis selling for $11, or $0.17 per bar. Through October 10, you can use a digital coupon to score one free bag of Mars candy for every two you buy. That would give you 195 pieces of candy at a per-piece price of just $0.11. It's only when you compare the prices of the smaller variety packs of Halloween candy to those of Dollar Tree that Dollar General falls short. A 20- or 30-count package of mini candy bars is $6.50 at Dollar General compared to $6 at Dollar Tree. However, until October 31, you can use a digital coupon at Dollar General to save $2 on any two bags of candy. Overall, Dollar General is one of the cheapest places to buy Halloween candy this year.
