There's nothing better than a warm, fluffy biscuit to round out a comforting plate of barbecue or a hot country breakfast. However, a good biscuit requires a bit of time and effort, and that's not something we always have to spare. That's where Pillsbury Grands! come in. The canned biscuit dough has been trusted for decades and comes in a handful of different flavors. The best version isn't the original or butter flavor though, it's another Southern staple: buttermilk.
One of Tasting Table's experts tried five Pillsbury Grands! biscuit flavors and ranked them from worst to best. Despite some interesting options, like a biscuit laced with Mike's Hot Honey, the buttermilk flavor ended up topping the list. Our tester enjoyed the simplicity, finding that the base flavor of the actual biscuit was able to shine through more without the add-ins. It was fluffy and uncomplicated, with a nice tang from the buttermilk. That acidity would work particularly well to help balance out rich, fatty dishes that biscuits are often served alongside like simple sausage gravy.
For this reason, our tester chose the buttermilk for the number one spot over the Butter Tastin' flavor, which came second. That one was still good, and if you're after a richer biscuit, it might be your top pick. Either way, both options have a lot more flavor than the original, which our tester found to be muted but solid. The structure was there, and it would provide a great base for an ultimate egg sandwich, but there wasn't anything unique about it.
'Carries gravy marvelously'
Our tester tried the Pillsbury Grands! Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits but the brand's Flaky Layers line offers a buttermilk biscuit as well. Both have received great reviews online.
Walmart customers have called the Southern Homestyle biscuits "soft, delicious" and an "empty canvas" that pairs great with a variety of dishes. "My go-to favorite for canned biscuits. I'd rather have these than mediocre homemade biscuits. Light, airy, carries gravy marvelously," one shopper wrote in a review. The sentiment seems to be the same on Amazon, where a customer wrote, "They're not just beautiful and delicious, the texture is light and fluffy too with nice layers that are great when peeled apart to add butter or jam."
Fans reporting using the biscuits as a base for breakfast sandwiches, but a simple smear of butter is apparently enough. Add a little honey for a sweet treat, or use the biscuits to make an easy monkey bread or pumpkin-cinnamon treat. They also work great for chicken and dumplings or mini pot pies. The original flavor could be a good swap-in for many of these recipes, but don't expect the same tangy, nuanced flavor you get with our top pick, the buttermilk biscuit.
