Truly great BBQ is a labor of love, a time-consuming process that takes a lot of patience, some serious dedication, and did we mention patience? Because there's a ton of that involved. While there are definitely some green flags that signal you're at a stellar BBQ restaurant, the really good ones come in all different shapes, sizes, and forms. Some of the best are unassuming little roadside stands, and we want to spotlight some of the most underrated treasures that are easy to drive past but are 1,000% worth a stop.

The key to our conversation here today is the underrated aspect of things, because there is no shortage of restaurants doing outstanding things to widespread acclaim. You'll hear plenty of conversations about the best, most award-winning BBQ spots in the States, but we want to do something different here. We wanted to find the places that have scores of fans making a drive from miles around ... but aren't known much beyond that.

So, we did some deep diving to find roadside BBQ stands that get lots of local love, but not the national media attention they deserve. These places are pouring hours into all the BBQ staples, the secret spots that those in the know take out-of-towners for something truly special. You won't find James Beard nods, mentions from the Michelin Guide, or spots on your favorite Food Network shows here, but devoted customers say these are the BBQ restaurants that would be right at home with the best of the best.

The Butcher BBQ Stand (Wellston, Oklahoma)

When Oklahoma wants outstanding BBQ, there's one place that's sure to please: The Butcher BBQ Stand in Wellston. It's gotten name-dropped as the best around in some Oklahoma publications, and there's a very good reason for that. It is — as the name suggests — under the umbrella of Butcher BBQ, the sprawling, BBQ-centric business of two-time World Champion BBQ Pitmaster David Bouska. Everything here was made with an eye toward winning high-profile competitions, but stop by the stand, and you'll find something delightfully down to earth.

You'll also find no shortage of fans who take to Reddit to post drool-worthy photos of trays overflowing with meats, sprinkled with sides, and for dessert, there's Twinkies galore. That might seem a bit strange, but take it from the experts: They're the perfect sweet treat to wrap up what might be the most over-the-top American meal around.

Sides are just as important to the BBQ experience as the meat is, and the apple pie baked beans here are a favorite. As for the meats, expect deliciously moist brisket, sausages that will change your opinions on what sausage can and should be, ribs bursting with flavor, and pulled pork and burnt ends that get lauded as being in best-ever territory. Long lines might be a given, but those who take the time say that it's worth the wait.

Follow Yer' Nose BBQ (Emigrant and Gardiner, Montana)

Follow Yer' Nose BBQ is proof that you don't have to head to the South to find amazing BBQ — you only have to visit the restaurant's Paradise Valley Shack in Emigrant or the Gardiner Smoke Wagon. Is it made more delicious by the fact you're surrounded by breathtaking views? We're not going to say no, but we'll also say these BBQ trays look so gosh darn good, we'd be surprised if you have eyes for anything else. It's so popular that it's outgrown smokers, smoke shacks, and seating capacities a few times, and for those who have helped this place continue to grow, that's probably not a surprise.

Not only is everything outstanding, but some claim it surpasses the best the South has to offer. Visitors who check this place out on the recommendations of locals find themselves of the opinion that it's worth revisiting even if that means a 12-hour drive to get there, and it's chock full of standouts.

Perfectly tender brisket and delicious sides are just the start, as the smoked turkey and pulled pork are only made better by the array of house-made sauces. The sausage is so popular that it just might be sold out, the ribs get some lovely shout-outs from happy customers, and the pimento cheese does, too. Customers appreciate that the generously portioned dishes come in to-go containers; it makes leftovers easy, and you're not going to want to waste a single bite.

The Shack BBQ (Lubbock, Texas)

When it comes time to talk about outstanding BBQ, some states clearly understood the assignment. Texas has a ton of great BBQ restaurants, and standing out from the pack might seem like a challenge, but plenty of customers say that The Shack BBQ does exactly that. It hasn't been all smooth sailing for this unassuming spot, which suffered a major fire in 2019, closed for a time, and changed ownership in 2021. Fortunately for fans, the new owners made it clear that they had invested in the restaurant because they loved what was happening there, and customers confirm it's the kind of place where one whiff lets you know you're in for something truly special.

It's the brisket that's the clear star, perfection from the delectable bark to the overflow of flavor. Jalapeño sausage is another favorite, alongside smoked turkey and massive beef ribs. It's the kind of place where you can be confident that there is no wrong order, and the urge to try some of everything will be real.

Sides like the loaded potato salad are the perfect complement to a meal that guarantees you'll leave filled to the brim, but regulars know that you'll need to save room for dessert. After all, you're not going to want to skip the apple pie cheesecake.

Jake's Grill (Cockeysville, Maryland)

It's a bit of an oddity these days to find a restaurant that doesn't have much of a social media or online presence, but we assume that the folks at Jake's Grill are just too busy handling the lines of people that show up for the pit beef sandwiches on offer here. Those who stumble across this super-tiny spot on a country road outside of Baltimore find generously portioned sandwiches made with wonderfully tender meats, and some say it's the best you can find anywhere in the area.

If you're wondering about the specialty, pit beef is the BBQ style that's perfect for rare meat lovers. This Baltimore-area staple features thinly sliced top round roast, and the stuff coming off the outdoor smokers here is the real deal.

Parking might be a bit of a challenge, and it might not be easy to shoulder your way in through the crowds, but listen to any number of locals, and they'll say that it's worth it. Beef is flawlessly tender every time — and some say they've been back for a hundred sandwiches ... give or take. Ribs are also delish but often sell out, the sauce is divine, and you won't want to skip on the pulled pork, either. It's been consistently incredible for years, and the pit turkey has its fair share of fans, too.

Randy's Original Roadside Bar-B-Que (Onsted, Michigan)

Randy's Original Roadside Bar-B-Que sits about halfway between — and to the west of — Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio. It might look like it's too far to be incredibly convenient to those in either city, but it turns out that's alright — it's the kind of spot that families plan entire trips around. It's so popular, in fact, that the smokers here are doing some serious heavy lifting to the tune of around 600 pounds of meat each and every day.

Finding the place is pretty easy: Look for the bright signs, colorful trailer, expanse of outdoor seating, and rusty trucks. Once you're there, you'll find a gift shop — don't miss the opportunity to pick up some homemade fudge — and as for the BBQ? Pulled pork, pulled chicken, and brisket are unparalleled, and if you're the type that always has trouble choosing, this place has you covered.

The Godzilla sandwich comes loaded with all three types of meat, and it's not only delicious, but it's big enough to share. (Whether or not you're going to want to, that's a whole different question.) Waffle fries topped with pulled pork, baked beans, mac and cheese, and a slathering of sauce are another favorite, along with sides like fried green tomatoes. Expect everything to be bursting with flavor and served by a super-friendly staff. And whatever you do, don't underestimate how well strawberry lemonade complements the sweet, sweet ribs.

Red State BBQ (Lexington, Kentucky)

Fans both connoisseur and casual know that sides are key to a great BBQ experience, and we're all familiar with the standard staples. There's more than cornbread and coleslaw going on at Red State BBQ, and if you ever wished you could add beer cheese grits, fried green tomatoes, BBQ egg rolls, or a soft pretzel onto your meal, this is your place. Beer cheese is a big deal here: You can also get a rave-worthy beer cheese brisket sandwich on a pretzel bun, and that kind of sums up what funky stuff is going on here.

Customers confirm that the beer cheese on pretty much anything is outstanding, and equally creative sauces take things to the next level. Those include not only Carolina-style sauces but an apple bourbon and Kentucky small batch, and the hardest part is choosing a favorite.

You'll want to go out of your way just to get the sauces, but rest assured that the meats can stand on their own. Double-smoked brisket gets a lot of love for being just the right amount of fatty and tender, and the smoked prime rib is a special that's worth going out of the way for. It's a favorite for good reason, and it's easy to see why locals recommend this as a must.

Jim's Smokin' Que (Blairsville, Georgia)

We firmly believe that the Appalachian food scene is vastly underrated, as the region has a number of small towns you'll want to visit for the food alone. Anyone looking for some seriously impressive smoked meats should check out Jim's Smokin' Que, and as a bonus, you'll be able to check out the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest at the same time — the BBQ spot sits right on the edge of the forest.

The restaurant itself has been around for a while, and those who stop by will undoubtedly notice the gas station motif. There's a good reason for that, as this place got its start as a part of the Booger Hollow Gas Station, and it quickly grew into a popular enough destination that it needed its own spot.

Mouthwatering aromas from the outside smokers tempt you from the moment you arrive, and when it comes time to talk favorites, it's clear that the brisket is top dog. Perfectly tender and deliciously flavorful, it's elevated rather than overpowered with thoughtfully prepared sauces. Seeing orders coming out for other tables leads diners to the conclusion that there's no way to go wrong here, and you might just find yourself ordering another round to take home for leftovers. Portions are hearty and generous, and the Brunswick stew is a must.

Currituck BBQ Company (Barco, North Carolina)

North and South Carolina have very different styles of BBQ ... and that's not even getting into the various subgroups. Head to North Carolina — particularly to the Outer Banks — and you'll find a family-owned spot that's been delighting diners for years. Currituck BBQ Company has been completing the beachside experience since 2006, and the folks here aren't just serving up outstanding meats, they've been an integral part of the community, too.

You'll see them posting about lending a hand at various community events, and in early 2026, this spot made local headlines after rescuing a 1920s-era schoolhouse from what seemed like certain demolition. Not only did the owner purchase the historic school, but he had it moved into his restaurant's backyard. Neat, right?

We're here to talk about food, though, and there's no shortage of praise for that, too. It's tough to tell whether people are more impressed by the quality of the food or the incredibly affordable prices, which is particularly impressive considering the family has been open about the challenges restaurants face in an increasingly expensive world. Pulled brisket and burnt ends come highly recommended, and travelers also appreciate the pet-friendly setup. Don't sleep on the sweet potato casserole, and the hush puppies alone have some saying that they make the entire trip.

Big Kev's BBQ (White Lake, New York)

New York City has plenty of places you can get outstanding BBQ, but it's safe to say that Upstate New York's best can rival any of them. You'll have to head to White Lake, and it's there you'll find an unassuming spot that's selling out regularly.

There's no doubt that Big Kev's BBQ is the real deal. The brisket takes up to 18 hours in the smoker, everything's given a kick of flavor thanks to cherry wood, and outdoor seating makes this the perfect spot to define the summer season. Grab a spot at any one of the picnic tables and plan on spending some time just soaking up the friendly vibes and outstanding atmosphere.

It's the sort of place that earns some serious fans who are willing to drive hours just to get there, and who say that everything's top-tier amazing. The sampler platter is the way to go because you're going to want to try everything, from pulled pork and ribs to brisket and burnt ends that have been favorites for years. Generous portions, delish cornbread, and ultra-creamy mac and cheese round things out, and it's easy to see how this place can and has become a summer tradition for those in the know.

Uncle Beth's BBQ (North Lewisburg, Ohio)

There's something special about the small towns you'll find scattered across the country, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it sort of places that are home to some seriously wonderful little hidden gems. Uncle Beth's BBQ has gotten some recognition for holding onto the traditions of small, independent restaurants that are struggling to hold their own against the massive chains, and this spot is doing it by combining outstanding food, unparalleled hospitality, and stories that remind everyone just how important community is.

When it's available, you'll find some of the best prime rib around, a longtime favorite for being flavorful, perfectly cut, and perfectly cooked. It's the sort of thing that earns fans who say it's definitely worth planning a meal around, and that Uncle Beth's can hold its own against the finest of fine dining restaurants. And yes, it's so good that some drive in from miles away just for the experience.

While that featured image of burnt ends is enough to speak for itself, that's only one of the many things that get rave reviews. Pulled pork and ribs are always a win, brisket is always juicy, and don't forget the cheese biscuits. Whether it's your first time or 50th, you'll feel like family.

Smokin' Barrels (Barrington, New Hampshire)

Manchester, New Hampshire, might be the Chicken Tender Capital of the World, but head over to Barrington, and you'll find a different kind of meat taking a top spot in the hearts of locals. Smokin' Barrels is a little roadside delight that gets regular shout-outs from customers who claim it's not only the best BBQ in the area, but the best to be found along that stretch of coastline.

The brisket is lauded as the kind of extra-flavorful, extra-juicy example of this BBQ staple that even wins over customers who tend to be skeptical of just how good brisket can be. Fans say that you should definitely start with the poutine and the deviled eggs, and the smoky maple fries are the absolute standout you probably didn't even know you needed until right now.

You'll also find extra-meaty pork ribs, delicious fried pork belly, and a staff that gets just as much love as the meats and sides they're serving. We also love to see when restaurants go out of their way to make sure everyone in a group can enjoy their experience, and that's happening here. Helpful staff will make suggestions for the vegetarians in the party and put together a meal that's just as wonderful, and we can all get on board with that kind of service.

Methodology

Every BBQ lover has a favorite spot or few, even pros like Michael Symon. In order to shine the spotlight on some of the rave-worthy spots that tend not to get the attention they deserve, we looked for a few things that started with devoted local followings. We looked for the unassuming places that got hundreds — if not thousands — of rave reviews on sites like Reddit, Google, Tripadvisor, and Yelp, but still managed to fly under the radar when it came to national press and awards or television features.

In order to make it onto the list, restaurants needed to be highly recommended for a variety of meats and sides, and we also looked for spots that are offering something outside the box. Whether that's unique, non-traditional sides, dozens of scratch-made sauces, or a promise of local sourcing and giving back to the community, each of these places is bringing something special to the table — and deserves some serious kudos.
