Cluttered countertops are one of the most common headaches in the kitchen. Stuff seems to endlessly accumulate, leaving you with less space to tackle everyday tasks, making the room feel more stressful than calming. Luckily, there are organization hacks to create more counter space, some of which can be especially aesthetically pleasing.
The best part is you don't need to wade into kitchen renovations or invest in shelves, cabinets, or new bins when there's a prettier storage solution to organize clutter. The secret is in repurposing drinking glasses. If you're looking to make space in your cabinets without parting with your favorite glasses, you can put them to work instead, leaving you with kitchen decor that also happens to be useful.
Per @irina_handmade_home's Instagram video, all you need to do is create lids for your glasses to keep everything clean and contained. Gather cork, like these Quartet cork tiles, and a utility knife. Trace the outside of the glass's rim to make one larger circle, then trace just inside the rim to make a slightly smaller circle. Cut both out and glue them together so the larger circle covers the rim while the smaller one fits snugly inside the glass. Use sandpaper to smooth the cork's edges, then use a screwdriver to make a hole in the center and screw in a cabinet or drawer knob to match your kitchen's style. Voila: gorgeous countertop storage.
Using and upgrading glasses as countertop organization
This approachable DIY project is proof you don't need to spend on pricey storage containers. With these lids, drinking glasses become a stylish way to keep your countertops organized. You'll have a neat row of etched, patterned, or light-catching glasses on your counter, making it easy to spot and grab everything from spices to tea and sugar packets. Use differently sized glasses to add dimension to the arrangement and store other countertop staples. Keep them in a line or dot them throughout your kitchen based on what you need and where.
You can really personalize these containers with the knob for the lid, too. Vintage knobs could be the eclectic charm your kitchen needs, and you can thrift for unique ones in glass, enamel, ceramic, brass, or whatever best suits your kitchen. You can also paint your cork lids or decoupage them with decorative napkins for pops of pattern.
"Why have I never thought of that!" remarks one commenter on @irina_handmade_home's Instagram post. Others call it a fantastic idea and genius, showing just how much commenters like the concept. Everyone's will look different depending on the touches they choose, though, which is a big part of this project's appeal. Once you try the project, you can apply the same technique to jars of different sizes to keep your organization cohesive and stylish.
