5 Blueberry Desserts From Walmart's Bakery, Ranked

Walmart has a lot of fantastic items and a pretty impressive grocery section. There's no shortage of frozen and fresh finds to stock in your kitchen. The bakery area certainly has some fan-favorite options, like the Tuxedo Bar Cake or Turtle Brownie Bites. Rather than focusing on chocolate treats, though, I was curious to taste the bakery's blueberry products. I rounded up as many as I could locate, which was surprisingly limited. 

 I was looking for things like cake or even cheesecake, but the options were more limited than that, as you will see shortly. I tried the items and ranked them by taste. It was important that the blueberry was a primary component and made itself known, but the rest of the pastry needed to be scrumptious as well. I'll tell you right now, I was not very impressed with the selection, so the top one actually stands out as the best that Walmart's Bakery has to offer. My bottom-of-the-pack bakery item goes to Freshness Guaranteed Blueberry Donut Holes. This stuff is most unpleasant. Every part of it is bad. The icing is wet and gooey, sticking to my fingers. I don't mind a messy donut, particularly when the sugary icing flakes off into a pile in my lap; however, this is wet and just creates a gross sensory experience. On top of that, the texture is hard and dense, like it's just been sitting around for who knows how long. 

To top that off, the overall flavor is subpar. It has an artificial blue flavoring, which I see in the ingredients listed as Blue 1. I find this unnecessary because blueberry already provides interesting colors. The ingredient list mentions dried blueberries, but I'm not sure where they appear in that form. They are not very noticeable in the bite I ate. Despite there being around 28 donut holes, I didn't even want to finish one. That's shocking coming from a sweet tooth. I would genuinely be embarrassed to bring this to a party. The reviews on the website show that there are indeed some happy campers, but there are still a fair number of low-star ratings. There may be better batches out there, but I do not want to give it a second chance.

I have to tell you that I'm a big scone lover. I don't mind those from grocery stores, fast food, or fast casual chains. I used to really dig the pumpkin scone from Starbucks and the cinnamon scone from Panera, both of which are long gone. Marketside's Blueberry Lemon Bakery Scones don't have quite as many problems as the donut holes, but I was pretty unimpressed with this. A scone is not typically airy and fluffy, so I'm certainly not expecting that, but this is so dense, compact, and thin. 

There's very little butteriness or flakiness that I would expect in a scone. I would even anticipate some crumbliness, but instead this scone just breaks off into a piece, kind of like a chipped portion of a ceramic mug — a clean break, if you will. The scone is loaded with dried blueberries, and I applaud the use of actual fruit pieces. However, because they and the pastry itself are so dry, they just kind of pop out of the scone when I rip off a piece, rolling out of the cooked treat like it is its own separate entity. 

This separation doesn't create a particularly harmonious flavor experience, but at least the lemon addition is pleasant, with a slight tartness. I like the absolute pile of sugar crystals on top, which offers a nice textural contrast. Still, I'd say to stick with your favorite blueberry scone recipe instead. Overall, these Walmart ones are kind of sad, but thankfully, they're actually edible compared to the worst donut holes.

You can find the Freshness Guaranteed Mini Blueberry Pie among other teensy pies at Walmart; there's quite an array from s'mores to pecan. After trying this fruit one, the blueberry isn't very interesting. The primary culprit is the filling, which is the most vital part. While I love crust, a pie is nothing without the filling; it's what gives it its name — apple, pumpkin, pecan; they all have their respective fillings. So, in this case, the pie is mostly blueberry pie filling — something that Walmart sells – not necessarily blueberries, which is an important distinction. It's a gooey substance with a blueberry flavor, but I want to experience, taste, and feel more actual blueberries. 

The ingredient list puts the fruit quite high up, but it doesn't seem very blueberry-like. There's a morsel here and there, but the best part of the pie is the flaky crust. The crust does the bulk of the work here, helping give the micro pie third place. I'd rather have a butter-based crust, but I can't be too picky, I suppose. Let's just say that I wasn't so put off by this Walmart baked good. Price was not a factor, but these are cutesy and affordable, and I could see them being fun for a small party or family gathering. The large blueberry pie didn't fare especially well in a bakery pie ranking either, where the writer deemed it somewhat boring. I have to agree with that.

Woohoo, Walmart, we've made immense progress now that we've made it to the muffin portion of the ranking. The Freshness Guaranteed Baked Mini Blueberry Muffins are pretty good, as long as you like a super soft crumb. This mini muffin is like a cotton puff, with a delicate, airy crumb structure. The ingredients list real blueberries, not dried ones, and it makes all the difference. The muffin's moist interior makes it feel quite fresh and bouncy, while nothing else on this list (yet) felt nearly as home-baked. 

The paper muffin cups are chic, too, almost like you made them yourself. Still, I'd prefer a slightly denser muffin base (compared to how light these are). Thankfully, there's nothing wrong with the flavor itself. It's a decent blueberry muffin with a sweet base and a twinge of tanginess from the fruit pieces. I enjoy the small size because it's easy to polish off the whole thing — great for kids' parties or basically any function when you want to reduce waste. Out of all the baked treats from a range of grocery stores, I wouldn't venture to Walmart to buy these, specifically. However, I would probably eat it if it was set out at a party. Hopefully, that gives you a clear idea of my personal stance on the goods.

Streusel can easily improve an okay muffin, and it certainly is a positive part of this Walmart bakery bite. The Marketside Lemon Blueberry Baked Muffin caught my eye over the regular blueberry streusel muffins or the non-sugar-added version — however, both are among the best blueberry muffins you can get at a grocery store. Ultimately, the lemony addition makes a big difference in the flavor of those versus the mini ones in second place. The lemon offers added flavor and a touch of fragrance that cuts through the sweetness and pairs nicely with the berry's natural sweet-tart nature. 

The lemon comes in the form of lemon pulp and perhaps the natural and artificial flavors disclosed on the packaging. The streusel isn't as firm or buttery as I like, but it brings some charm into the equation. The best part is the fruit — the blueberries are surprisingly large and abundant. Even a few bluebs in a muffin add a mild textural difference that provides more chew than the soft muffin base alone. I'll admit I still feel similarly about these muffins as I do about the previous ones — good, but not amazing enough to warrant a repeat purchase. Still, I have to give it credit. This Marketside muffin is tasty and the best out of the blueberry selections I tried.

I picked up all the blueberry bakery items in one morning. I tried them that same day to ensure they were fresh. I selected the items with the furthest best-by date to ensure they were the freshest available at that time. I scoured the bakery area but didn't see any other blueberry items beyond the donut, pie, muffin, and scone selection. Granted, there might be blueberries within something, but I did not have time to look at the ingredient lists for everything in the bakery. 

I ultimately judged my selection on its taste. Blueberries are the key here, and I wanted them to be a primary flavor component. The rest of the pastry was equally important. Did it have a delicious, compelling taste that made me want to take more than one bite? Texture was also factored in because some of the pastries were dense and hard and made for a less appetizing experience. The baked goods that rank at the top have the most blueberry-forward flavor and the best taste and texture. 

As you can gather, the bottom-ranking ones suffered from some major issues that made them mostly unpleasant to consume — too hard, dry, strange flavors. If you want a blueberry sweet treat from Walmart's Bakery, then either muffin makes a good choice, but other than that, you might want to pick another pastry from the bakery section.
