Don't Buy An Induction Stove Before Considering This Hidden Expense First

The accounting for a new induction stove is pretty straightforward: The stove's price tag, shipping, installation, and electricity. And yet, very few shoppers ever consider the outlet they're using to juice up those induction ranges, which is what will ultimately decide what the project costs in total. To be clear, you can't plug full-size induction ranges and built-in cooktops into a normal outlet (the kind you use to charge your phone). They use way more power than just about anything else in a kitchen — in fact, Consumer Reports puts the requirement at a high-amperage circuit, 40 or 50 amps at 240 volts, running through very thick wire to a four-prong outlet. And, if your kitchen was plumbed for gas, you very likely lack that infrastructure. A gas range doesn't need anything more than an ordinary 120-volt wall outlet to work, so if you now want that spot to deliver 240 volts, you'll need a licensed electrician to run new cable from the service panel into the kitchen.
Homes already cooking on electric start ahead, though not necessarily automatically since voltage is only one variable. The circuit also has to carry the amperage the specific model calls for, and the panel needs a free double-pole slot plus enough total capacity to absorb the load alongside the dryer, the air conditioner, and anything else drawing heavily from it. An electrician runs a load calculation to figure all this out. Their hourly rate, the requisite supplies, and so on — they all count towards the final bill for your new induction range.
The cost for installing an induction stove depends on where your service panel sits
Distance and access are among the most influential variables in deciding how expensive the rewiring job for a new induction stove is going to be. First, let's assume the best-case scenario: Your kitchen sits directly above the electrical panel, the cable runs through open space without getting fished through walls or finished ceilings, and the work takes a couple of hours. That's still going to be a few hundred dollars of labor and wire — the cheapest this job ever gets. Most houses aren't set up like this, though.
Say your panel has room for a new 40-amp breaker — great. Now, put a finished basement ceiling between it and your stove. Every electrician who bids will tell you that ceiling has to come open in one to three spots, and nobody knows how many until they start fishing wire. A good one finds a channel alongside a duct, cuts a single hole, and leaves you to patch the drywall yourself. Even then you're closer to $1,000 to $1,300 than $400. If the panel can't take the load, upgrading to 200 amps runs $750 to $2,000 and often more.
Then there's the time commitment. Depending on where you are, it can take anywhere from days to weeks between contacting contractors, collecting quotes, and simply waiting around until they're available. Always factor that into your plan as well.
A 120-volt range moves the cost into the appliance itself
You have to give appliance makers credit: They understand their customers' woes. As a result, a newer category of induction stoves — battery-equipped ranges — has hit the market, promising to solve all of the troubles detailed above. The design is ingenious; when you cook, the range draws on its onboard battery. Between meals, the battery is recharged with power from your 120-volt outlet. Copper's Charlie, a 30-inch range with a 5-kWh battery, is the most visible, while Electra builds a 30-inch range on the same principle.
The catch is the sticker — the Copper's Charlie starts at $5,999, which is way above most 240-volt induction ranges, even after accounting for the extra electrical work. The Electra is cheaper at $3,999, but that's still pricier than many conventional induction ranges. That makes these not such a good deal if you're dealing with a straightforward $400 circuit. But if you have a panel upgrade to consider, a long cable run through finished walls, or a rental where structural electrical work is impossible, these kinds of induction ranges are great.
In case you've never cooked on one before and are unsure whether it's even worth the splurge, a decent portable (or countertop) induction cooktop unit can be picked up for around $100. They plug into a normal outlet, and require magnetic pans, so it's a good time to do a cookware audit. It's also a low-stakes way to get past the biggest induction cooktop mistakes before committing to a full range. Double-coil portable units are another option. They're a popular workaround in apartments where the panel isn't the tenant's to touch.
