Eggs And Toast Get A High-Fiber Boost When You Swap The Bread For This

Eggs and toast are a breakfast classic. However, this meal isn't known for being high in fiber. For those who wish to boost the fiber in their breakfast, try swapping out the bread with a high-fiber tortilla, as Kelsey Kunik, the registered dietitian behind Graciously Nourished, recommended. "While dipping toast in sunny-side-up eggs can't really be replicated with a tortilla, swapping your breakfast sandwich with a breakfast burrito can be a tasty, high-fiber option," she said.

Fiber isn't the only perk of this swap. Kunik said, "A high-fiber tortilla could boost your fiber intake at breakfast, helping you feel fuller longer and may make your breakfast more satisfying. A lot of the high-fiber tortillas are also lower in calories than traditional tortillas, which could reduce the calories of your meal without sacrificing satisfaction."

Kunik has a point: The high-fiber tortilla is only the beginning. As shown in Ksenia Prints' make-ahead, high-protein breakfast burrito recipe, you can stuff them with additional hearty, high-protein ingredients. Or try a breakfast quesadilla, "filling the tortilla with eggs, beans, spinach, and a bit of cheese," suggested Kunik. "The beans add extra protein and fiber, and tossing a handful of baby spinach into the mix can give you a serving of leafy greens first thing in the morning."

Turn eggs and toast into a hearty burrito or a lighter meal for breakfast when you use tortilla

Another idea is to scramble your eggs and add a protein like ham or chopped sausage. Or try a quick stuffed tortilla breakfast with eggs and potatoes. Wrap your eggs and other ingredients in a high-fiber tortilla, and you've got a homemade version of the drive-thru breakfast burrito while still in your pajamas.

On the other hand, plenty of folks prefer a lighter breakfast. If that's you, swapping toast for a high-fiber tortilla doesn't mean you have to make a hefty burrito or quesadilla. As Kelsey Kunik explained, "A lot of the high-fiber tortillas are also lower in calories than traditional tortillas, which could reduce the calories of your meal without sacrificing satisfaction."

You can simply wrap your eggs in the tortilla for a light but filling breakfast. Since you won't be dunking toast in runny egg yolk, there's no need to stick with sunny-side-up, either. Check out Tasting Table's guide to 19 different ways to cook eggs for more ideas.
