A La Cornue range is no regular kitchen appliance. Nay, it's not even just a very, very nice stove. It's a handcrafted custom design statement and true family heirloom that can easily cost more than the average price of an American home. The French luxury brand has built its reputation on artisanal construction, distinctive oven design, and incredibly extensive personalization options that border on the ridiculous. Of course, this level of exclusivity comes with a staggering price tag. La Cornue ranges can cost tens of thousands of dollars, with its flagship models reaching well into six figures. Now, Martha Stewart did say your oven is a kitchen appliance that's worth the splurge, but she surely didn't have these numbers in mind.

The French brand can trace its history back to 1908, when founder Albert Dupuy introduced an oven featuring a vaulted interior designed to circulate heat. More than a century later, not much has changed. We've mentioned the brand as one that offers stylish retro appliances, and that's because each La Cornue range is still handcrafted and numbered by its makers, rather than mass-produced on a conventional assembly line. Not only that, but buyers can also choose from thousands of possible configurations, custom colors, finishes, and measurements to make their own highly personalized range. The company's premium line, the Château Series, is made-to-order at its workshop in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, on the outskirts of Paris.

French craftsmanship and endless customization comes at a cost

The brand's labor-intensive approach certainly helps explain some of the cost, as custom manufacturing requires skilled workers, specialized production, and way more time than standardized production. Of course, its French provenance and La Cornue's storied history also add to this luxury status symbol. And with such exquisite craftsmanship comes some serious cooking features. The Château Series ranges can combine both gas and electric ovens, while the cooktop can be configured with options like gas burners, induction hobs, a teppanyaki surface, and a French top for gradual heat variation. This means you have the flexibility to roast a couple chickens, simmer a few sauces, bake a cake, and stir-fry yakisoba — all at the same time.

High-quality materials and construction also factor into the price. The brand uses enamel finishes, polished brass and nickel, solid walnut, and even leather in the construction of these gorgeous beasts. Premium hardware is definitely a custom kitchen feature that's worth the money when remodeling; although if you're considering purchasing a La Cornue range, sticking to a budget probably isn't a concern for you.

La Cornue's astronomical prices certainly reflect the craftsmanship, customization, and distinctive design that goes into creating these lifetime heirlooms. If you're a passionate home cook and design-obsessed homeowner who also happens to have tens of thousands of dollars to spare, it can be worth the splurge. For everyone else, there's plenty of highly ranked stove brands that won't break the bank.
