7 Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Meats, Ranked
Oscar Mayer is one of the most recognizable meat brands at the grocery store. But if you're like me, then you may more closely associate the brand with one of many options that sell hot dogs rather than with deli meat. However, Oscar Mayer carries a whole deli meat line called Deli Fresh, featuring classic preparations of turkey, chicken, ham, and beyond. Are these the most gourmet deli meats I've ever come across? Not exactly. Rather, they're the kind of cold cuts you would layer onto a sandwich for your kids' lunchbox or to pack in a cooler on a spring break road trip: the basics for sandwich-building.
I headed to my local supermarket to pick up the Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh meats available there and ranked them from worst to best based on both flavor and texture to help give you a better idea of what to expect when you buy from this brand. You might decide to pick up some of these products to make sandwiches in the upcoming week, or perhaps you'll opt to put a package back after learning more about its taste. Either way, your deli meat game is about to get a lot stronger.
7. Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
Out of all of the deli meats I tried in this lineup, the oven roasted turkey breast from Oscar Mayer seemed the simplest of them all. It's not smoked, so you don't get the same flavor complexity that you'll find in some of the other options here, and it doesn't come covered in a slew of extra seasonings, either. Rather, you basically get plain roasted turkey breast, sliced extra thin. I do like how thin these slices are, but that's the case with most of the products on this list. Flavor-wise, though, I think this roasted turkey misses the mark.
As I opened the package, I noticed it didn't smell particularly fresh, although that aroma dissipated after a few seconds. But that's not where the problems end. This meat doesn't taste like anything. It has a mild, salty meatiness, but it's surprising how bland it is otherwise. Somehow, this deli meat just tastes low-quality, like you're getting a product that's cheaper than what you're actually paying. Paired with that strange smell, this meat ultimately felt like a waste of money — I wouldn't buy it again.
6. Honey Smoked Turkey Breast
I know there are a lot of people out there who really love some sweetness with their meat, but unfortunately, I'm not one of them. This is part of the reason this Deli Fresh honey smoked turkey ranks as poorly as it does. The base flavor of the turkey itself isn't particularly interesting, featuring that same bland saltiness as the roasted version. There's more flavor here, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, though, that flavor is cloying and clashes — not complements — with the bland meat note. I can see what Oscar Mayer was going for here, but the combination of subpar turkey and basic sweetness doesn't work well together.
That being said, this honey smoked option still deserves a higher ranking than its blander counterpart because it offers more flavor potency. And, admittedly, some people may actually enjoy the sweetness this product offers. Considering that the meat still feels cheap, though, this selection will remain another no-go deli meat for me.
5. Smoked Turkey Breast
Now, we're getting into some of the deli meats that are a bit more interesting. This seems like a cheaper brand overall, so this smoked turkey breast isn't the best I've ever had. However, it has a few important characteristics that the worst-ranked varieties on this list are lacking. First of all, it has a decent amount of flavor. No, it's not quite as bold as the best-ranked varieties on this list, but I can taste smokiness, which instantly makes every slice a bit more flavorful. You still have that bland savory quality, but it's enhanced by some depth of flavor. Personally, I wish Oscar Mayer would've been a bit more heavy-handed with the smoke, but the resulting mildness from this product makes sense for those looking for neutral and approachable deli meat, like you might for little ones.
If you are looking for a simpler flavor, I would opt for this smoked turkey breast over Oscar Mayer's previous turkey options. The flavor should pair well with just about any kind of bread or toppings you use without fading to the background.
4. Honey Ham
Ham isn't necessarily my go-to deli meat, and I specifically don't like honey ham (although I can get down with these delicious ham recipes). However, I was pleasantly surprised that Oscar Mayer's honey ham is actually pretty good. The real appeal here is the texture. This deli ham isn't quite as soft as other varieties and instead has more of a bite to it, with an almost bouncy texture that I really enjoyed. It's the only variety on this list that boasts this texture, so it stuck out to me. Just don't expect a thick slice of ham — like all of the other Deli Fresh varieties I tried, this meat is sliced incredibly thinly, which creates an even better texture when you stack several slices on top of one another.
When it comes to flavor, this ham is just okay. While I don't particularly like sweet meat, I do think ham is a better pairing for those honeyed notes than turkey is. The meat itself has a more pronounced flavor, with a bolder saltiness that doesn't taste quite so bland. The sweetness is subtle, and I feel like someone looking for honey ham might not appreciate how mild it is.
3. Mesquite Smoked Turkey Breast
If you prefer a milder smoked turkey breast, then the plain smoked Deli Fresh turkey is perfect for you. But if you're seeking a bolder burst of flavor from your deli meat, the brand's mesquite smoked turkey is a better option. Although you can taste a small amount of smokiness with the former, you actually get that signature mesquite flavor here, with an earthiness and herbal quality that makes every slice taste more savory. There's a depth of flavor that can make your deli meat dishes taste a lot more interesting.
All that said, you should still keep your expectations in check, as the turkey itself doesn't taste very high-quality. This is a basic deli meat brand with some general blandness, and it doesn't taste like freshly smoked turkey you'd get at a BBQ (or even like a higher-end deli meat). For a store-bought variety, it's certainly not a bad option, and I consider it one of the best of the Deli Fresh lineup. But, honestly, there are probably better packaged deli turkey brands out there.
2. Cracked Black Pepper Turkey Breast
I absolutely love peppered meats, so maybe I'm biased in placing this Deli Fresh black pepper deli turkey near the top of the list. But I truly feel that this is the most flavorful deli turkey I tasted from Oscar Mayer's Deli Fresh brand. While I do feel there could be more black pepper for an even bolder flavor, there's still a decent amount in this sliced turkey breast, which creates an earthy boldness the rather neutral flavor of the meat itself lacks. This creates the kind of weight and depth the meat needs.
This one would be my first choice if I were going to make a sandwich, like a turkey panini with chipotle cranberry spread, with one of the turkey varieties in the Deli Fresh lineup. Even though this meat packs a lot of flavor on its own, I still don't think that it would clash with most other savory ingredients you could add to a sandwich or wrap. Since black pepper pairs well with most veg and condiments, you don't have to limit yourself when it comes to toppings. The deli meat is more flavorful than other varieties, so you can enjoy it on its own — beyond just using it in a sandwich.
1. Rotisserie Seasoned Chicken Breast
Unfortunately, most of the Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh meats I found at the grocery store were turkey. As much as I can appreciate turkey for being a lean source of protein, it usually isn't very flavorful. If I'm going to eat poultry deli meat, I'm much more interested in chicken. Luckily, the brand's rotisserie seasoned sliced chicken did not disappoint. Most importantly, the actual meat is wildly more flavorful than the turkey varieties. It actually has a flavor of its own, rather than that unpleasantly bland, salty flavor I encountered. The rotisserie seasoning is really nice too, adding another pop of boldness that takes this deli meat to the next level. It has a strong, savory note that I didn't expect after tasting the much milder turkeys.
Texture-wise, I also found the chicken breast more tender than any of the other varieties, while also retaining just a slight bite to keep it from falling apart immediately. The slices are quite thin, which means they tear easily when I take them out of the package. Honestly, this is probably the only Deli Fresh product I'd actively seek out again.
Methodology
I chose these specific Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh varieties based on availability at a grocery store in my area and tried each variety cold, straight from the package, on its own. As someone who eats deli meat occasionally, I evaluated each variety based on flavor and texture, when relevant (especially in the case of the ham and chicken, which differ in texture from the turkey selections). I specifically looked for bolder, more pronounced flavors, and the deli meats that had these qualities are ranked near the top of the list. Blander, less flavorful varieties tended toward the bottom.
