On breakneck mornings before a long day at work, or on leisurely Sundays with no responsibilities or plans, nothing hits like fast food breakfast. Crucially, it only works if the meal is worth waking up early to get. To that end, a word of advice to Wendy's customers, and to croissant fans in particular: Skip the Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant. In Tasting Table's ranking of eight breakfast sandwiches from Wendy's, this one fell to last place.

The Wendy's Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant features a fresh-cracked grade A egg, applewood smoked bacon, and gooey Swiss cheese sauce on a croissant. In execution, none of these elements wowed our taste tester. As we mentioned in their ranking, the croissant has a "middle-of-the-road texture" that's neither unpleasantly dense nor satisfyingly flaky. All in all, this sandwich's would-be star element left them lukewarm.

Even more than the "blah" croissant, the sandwich's biggest sin was its Swiss cheese sauce. While the applewood-smoked bacon put up major sweet-smoky flavor points, the sauce was flavorless. Quoth our taste-tester, "The sauce contains various iterations of dairy — Neuchâtel cheese, cream, milk, whey protein concentrate, Swiss cheese, cheddar, butter, and sour cream — along with many other ingredients. Yet it somehow gets muddled and is hardly noticeable underneath the bacon."

The Wendy's Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant sounds a lot more flavorful than it is

Tasting Table's taste tester isn't alone in their feedback either. Even apparent fans of the Wendy's Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant note the hit-or-miss factor of that Swiss cheese sauce. As one foodie wrote in a Reddit thread, "The Breakfast Baconator and the Sausage Croissant sandwich are my go-tos but the Swiss cheese sauce on those items has been polarizing for some so maybe consider getting it on the side?" Many suggest adding sliced cheese to the sandwich.

At a Wendy's location in Chicago, the Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant sandwich à la carte costs $4.69. The price may be right, but even so, folks don't necessarily get what they pay for. You're better off ordering the consistently solid Maple Bacon Chicken Croissant — the croissant-centric Wendy's breakfast sammy that came in second in the ranking for its sweet-salty dimensionality. Croissant fans will love the toothy, generous chicken patty.

Foodies on Reddit echoed our take, writing, "Finally tried breakfast at Wendy's and it's my new favorite fast food breakfast! Got the Maple Bacon Chicken Croissant. Yum! Perfect balance of sweet and savory." As long as you can get there before the time Wendy's stops serving breakfast, you'll be rewarded with a satisfying start to the day. The Sausage, Egg & Cheese English Muffin is another Wendy's breakfast sandwich that gets everything right.
