The lactose-intolerant amongst us used to have a pretty hard time in the yogurt department, but the range of dairy-free options available has really expanded in recent years. Gone are the days of small-scale products and strange aftertastes — now there are creamy oat yogurts, nutty almond tubs, and tropical coconut concoctions. A tester from Tasting Table recently decided to focus on the latter, tasting nine coconut yogurt brands and ranking them from worst to best. The winner was a silky newcomer that needs to be on your radar: Coconut Cult.
Coconut Cult was founded by Noah Simon-Waddell, who started making his own yogurt after experiencing gut issues. What began as an at-home experiment in a California kitchen has grown into a national company and social media darling. According to our tester, the products live up to the hype. Their favorite element was the unique, mousse-like texture that made the yogurt feel more like a dessert than a healthy breakfast. It was thick yet light and airy, with a whipped quality that other brands haven't quite mastered.
Our tester tried both the Original and Harvest Strawberry flavors and was equally impressed by each. The base was tangy but delicate, tasting almost like Greek yogurt but with mild coconut notes. The tropical flavor was masked a little more in the strawberry, but the fruitiness was really enjoyable and provided a different experience. There's also a Chocolate Mousse and a limited-edition Matcha flavor available, all of which seem to be beloved by fans.
What other buyers say about Coconut Cult
One Amazon customer wrote in a review, "I look forward to a spoonful of this every morning! Strawberry is definitely the best flavor with the best consistency." Others praised the creamy texture and strong probiotic qualities, as Coconut Cult is made with a custom blend of 16 species of probiotics that support different aspects of gut health. The only other ingredients in the Original are organic coconut cream, coconut meat, and coconut water.
The one thing to keep in mind is that those who are new to fermented foods are advised to start slow. The recommended serving size for beginners is two to four fluid ounces, which can increase as your stomach gets used to the strong cultures. The effervescent flavor of the yogurt may also taste strange if you haven't had a strong Greek yogurt or kombucha. But it is something you get used to, as people have outlined in other reviews.
A Target shopper said, "The first bite for me was sharp and tangy with what some have described as a mild carbonation (that's normal, it's fermented!), and the end notes are creamy coconut. Now all I taste is just creamy coconut. It's rich and almost buttery tasting." Some people take just a few spoonfuls of the yogurt or use it as a topping. You could try it on fluffy banana protein pancakes or chocolate overnight oats. Once you're used to it, you may never look for a lactose-fueled yogurt again.
