Culver's Pot Roast Sandwich Is 10X More Flavorful When You Request These Toppings

From a ButterBurger without toppings to a classic fish fry, Culver's has plenty options for customers who like to keep things simple (until you get to the dozens of mix-in choices for your frozen custard, that is). However, many fans find ways to customize items and add major flavor. Take the pot roast sandwich, for example. On its own, the offering simply consists of slow-braised beef served on a toasted bun. But when combined with the right dairy options, veggies, and condiments, the flavor of this sandwich can really sing.

To order the very best pot roast sandwich, Reddit users suggest adding cheese. You can  request a slice of American, Swiss, or cheddar, or lean into the chain's Wisconsin roots and get a side of Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Sauce to pour over the top. If you request The Works, you'll get pickles, ketchup, mustard, and raw onions — great toppings to cut through the richness of the beef and add some bright flavor. But there's more to choose from: bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions, and jalapeños can all be added to customize your meal.

"I love getting the pot roast with Swiss and grilled onions," shared one Culver's fan on Reddit. Another Reddit user recommended taking it a step further: "Sometimes I add mushrooms, grilled onions and the BBQ sauce too, but it gets to be a mess." The cooked onions and mushrooms arguably give the pot roast a beef stew vibe. Meanwhile sauce can take the shredded beef sandwich into pulled pork-style territory. It probably doesn't hurt that the chain uses one of  Sweet Baby Ray's, one of the best selling barbecue sauce brands in the country.

You can also opt for a spicier condiment to make your pot roast sandwich worthy of a chef's kiss. "I will [get] our pot roast sandwich either on a hamburger bun or on sourdough with cheddar and horseradish sauce," suggests an alleged Culver's employee on Reddit. "[B]oth are delicious!"

A classic pairing for prime rib, horseradish cuts through the beef's fatty flavor. That quality also makes it a great way to give your Culver's order some zing. The chain uses a more premium cut of beef in its pot roast sandwiches — opting for fattier chuck roast instead of the leaner rump roast — so the bite of horseradish would be equally welcome on this sandwich.

And of course, you can also swap out the bread. A toasted Kaiser bun is the go-to offering, but the Culver's website also offers a brioche or gluten free bun as alternatives. But those aren't the only breads in-house. A quick perusal of the Culver's menu reveals that they also offer items using sourdough bread, and rye bread. While you can't select these breads when placing an order online, you can order your pot roast sandwich on any of these options when ordering in-person. Just remember to be patient and kind — the employees wish you'd stop forgetting your manners at home.
