La Fermière Vs Oui French Yogurt: Why One Costs So Much More

Yogurt lovers know that French yogurt is distinctly different from other yogurts. However, two seemingly similar French-style brands — Oui French-style Yogurt by Yoplait and La Fermière French yogurt — have radically different price points, which may come as a surprise to consumers. Both are made by using the centuries-old French method called "pot-set," where live cultures are added to milk and fermented directly in the individual pots that the yogurt is eventually sold in. Despite this, a jar of Oui yogurt costs about $1.90 at most Target stores, while a single serving of La Fermière yogurt costs closer to $3 per pot at Whole Foods.

La Fermière is known for its French heritage, for sourcing only choice ingredients, and for sticking with small-batch, artisanal methods that are time-intensive — all of which leads to a pricier product. To get their yogurt just right, La Fermière sources local ingredients (their New York facility sources milk fresh from an upstate dairy farm in Schuylerville). The La Fermière team also hand-presses its own lemon juice (Oui sticks with less time-intensive lemon pulps and purées), and hand-cuts vanilla beans sourced from Madagascar. The company is willing to focus less on scale, keeping production teams small at 15-20 employees per facility, and focus more on setting itself apart as elite and high-end as its way to drive sales.

Why La Fermière is more expensive

La Fermière appeals to high-end retailers, positioning itself as a decadent treat rather than a daily snack, and with good reason. All of La Fermière's yogurts start with a base of both whole milk plus real cream, making the yogurt exceptionally thick with an almost velvety finish.

Both companies set themselves apart from other yogurt by using reusable glass jars, but La Fermière also packages its non-fruit yogurt in pretty ceramic yogurt cups that customers want to keep and reuse. Social media went wild for the latest 2026 summer release of La Fermière pots that came in baby blue, pastel pink, and butter yellow. Customers even scan reseller sites to purchase specialty pots, like a recent limited-time release of Valentine's Day red pots etched with "Be Mine." La Fermière's little yogurt cups can be repurposed in a myriad of ways, and even used as individual baking dishes that can withstand up to 480 degrees in the oven, since they're made from temperature-proof terracotta. Oui's jars are reusable, but are not tempered for oven use. Just another way La Fermière goes the extra mile to produce a package that signifies to customers that there's an elevated taste inside — but you better be willing to pay for it.
