Keep Your Counters Clutter-Free With One Easy DIY Floating Storage Trick
Whether it's cramped countertops or cluttered cupboards, there never seems to be enough kitchen space. Clever storage bins help contain the disorder, but they don't free up the valuable countertop and cabinet space that your appliances and dishes already compete for. However, there is a solution that finds a new use for the previously dead zone underneath your cupboards: floating mason jars. By attaching mason jar lids directly to the underside of your cupboards, this hack allows the jars to appear to float above the counter for easy access and a clean look. The lids stay in place, which also saves you from ever losing them. You just have to twist the jar onto the cabinet's underside to seal and store its contents, and just as easily twist it off when it's time to use what you've stored inside.
To adopt this setup for your own kitchen, first decide how many mason jars you'd like to hang and line them up in your space. You'll need adequate room in between each jar to make sure you can comfortably unscrew and replace all of the containers, especially without having them knock into each other. Once the spacing is decided — and ideally marked with a pencil or sticker — it's time to break out the drill. The trick is to pre-drill holes through the mason jar lids and the underside of your cupboard to ensure you're making holes in the exact right spots. After drilling, screw the mason jar lids directly into the cabinet's underside.
Choosing the right setup for floating mason jars
Screw-mounted mason jars are excellent for storing small items that you want easy access to. Spices, teas, and snacks like homemade granola work perfectly. They also keep these items visible and organized in see-through containers instead of hidden at the back of a cupboard. Instead of food, you can free up your junk drawer by storing items such as thumb tacks, rubber bands, and spare fasteners.
If the idea of screwing mason jar lids directly into your wooden cabinets seems unappealing, there are a couple of alternatives that will still let you take advantage of this hack. For example, you can use an adhesive to attach magnets to your cabinet, then use the magnets to hold up the mason jar lids. Alternatively, screw the lids into a separate wooden board before securing that board to the underside of your cabinets.
Whichever mount you choose, be sure to load-test its hold before leaving the floating mason jars unattended. It's important to make sure the mount can support the total weight of the jar and its contents. Depending on how you secure your jars, some weightier items such as flour, rice, or dried beans might be disqualified from floating storage. Additionally, the placement of jars deserves careful consideration. Don't fix them too close to countertop appliances that you use frequently or existing kitchen fixtures like hanging paper towel holders.
