The Company Behind Costco's Kirkland Signature Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Wine

Costco has exclusive deals on high quality wine that you can't find anywhere else, including what we called the best cheap sparkling wine on the market. Another favorite Costco wine is their sauvignon blanc. It's made in a traditional Marlborough New Zealand style, meaning it has high acidity, a medium body, and flavors of tropical fruits like passionfruit and pineapple, alongside typical sauvignon blanc notes of freshly cut grass, lemon, and lime. This white wine should be on your grocery list as it costs around $7 or $8 a bottle, depending on where you live, which is an incredible deal. The cost of a yearly membership may pay for itself once you switch from comparable sauvignon blancs like Kim Crawford ($13 at Total Wine) and buy a case of Kirkland.

This sauvignon blanc is exclusively made by Ti Point, so you can only buy this wine from Costco or directly from the winery. Ti Point is named after a peninsula in Northern New Zealand that extends off the Matakana coast. The first grapes grown and made into Ti Point wine were from this peninsula, which was owned by the Haslam family. The winery doesn't make any other wines for Costco, but it does make other varieties, like a strawberry-colored merlot rose and a chardonnay aged in French oak.

Ti Point has been making wine since the '90s. In comparison to wineries in France or Italy, that seems young, however New Zealand sauvignon blanc has only been commercially produced since the '70s.

Ti Point doesn't disclose which of its vineyards the grapes for the Kirkland Signature wine were grown, but we do know that the grapes were harvested at night, when it was cooler, and were gently pressed. Both of these things can help retain the grape's delicate aromas and high acidity which this sauvignon blanc is known for.

Brianne Cohen of Decanter gave this sauvignon blanc a high rating. She wrote that immediately upon smelling the wine, she detected a brightness and acidity unique to Marlborough sauvignon blanc, and included lemon-lime, freshly cut grass and ripe pineapple in her tasting notes. "This is a classic porch-pounder sauvignon for the summertime," she said. While summer's at its end, this wine is available year-round at Costco and would make a great purchase no matter the season.
