The Best Canned Tequila Cocktail Brand In 2026 Isn't Jose Cuervo Or Cutwater

When searching for a canned tequila cocktail, some of the biggest names in the liquor aisle may seem like obvious choices. Jose Cuervo has generations of tequila history behind its name, while Cutwater has built an extensive lineup of ready-to-drink cocktails. But when Tasting Table writer Robin Miller sampled and ranked eight canned tequila cocktail brands in 2026, neither took the top spot. That honor went to South Norte, a lesser-known label whose combination of real Mexican tequila, fruit-forward flavors, and range of well-balanced cocktails that took the proverbial cake — or can, in this scenario. 

For this ranking, Miller sampled 27 individual drinks from eight brands and considered things such as flavor balance, fruitiness, how clearly the tequila came through, and the variety each company offered. South Norte impressed across the board. The brand's two Tequila Soda options were equally crisp and refreshing. The Paloma matched grapefruit and lime with noticeable tequila, while the Matador delivered plenty of fresh pineapple flavor. The Mexican Mule leaned bolder, combining tequila, ginger beer, and lime with a lingering spicy kick. Miller's favorite was the Margarita, which she thought came remarkably close to the experience of drinking a freshly prepared margarita.

South Norte describes itself as a Mexican-American beverage brand inspired by the flavors or Mexico, and all of its ready-to-drink (RTD) canned cocktails are made with blanco tequila. Instead of building the flavorful premium drinks around flavored syrups, it uses natural ingredients and real fruit juice to interpret sweet, sour, and spicy flavor profiles. 

Shoppers seem to largely share the same sentiments as Miller, showing high levels of enthusiasm for the South Norte canned tequila drinks. South Norte's variety pack currently has a 4.7-star average from 34 ratings at Target, where one reviewer said the drinks were "not overly sweet or artificial," and another felt that each can "genuinely tastes like a freshly made cocktail" when poured over ice. 

However, not everyone thinks they're perfect. A review by Drinkhacker praised South Norte's cocktails as "clean, light and refreshing," but found the actual tequila flavor to be too subdued in several varieties. That's largely a matter of preference, though. For drinkers who want a canned cocktail that tastes balanced instead of in-your-face boozy, that restraint is likely part of South Norte's appeal. It could also explain why it edged out much bigger names in our 2026 ranking, including Jose Cuervo, Cazadores, and High Noon. 

For a company that currently keeps its energy focused on just six premium ready-to-drink tequila cocktails and two craft beers, it's earned a lot of booze cred in a relatively short selling history. The canned tequila cocktails launched in 2022 and are currently available in major supermarkets across Southern California and Arizona. There's no word on expansion plans, but the company does encourage potential customers to email them to ask about direct orders.
