There's nothing better to wash down fried chicken like a tall glass of sweet tea ... or, maybe a fizzy soda? At KFC, foodies belonging to either camp don't have to pick. As the iconic KFC scene from "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" (2026) reminds fans that a bucket of tender fried chicken can represent much more than just a meal. KFC is currently one of the top 20 fast food chains in the U.S. by sales — yet, many gourmands seem to be sleeping on its chain-exclusive soft drink flavor. One of the most common ordering mistakes you're making at KFC is overlooking Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning at the soda fountain.

KFC's Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning is a Southern-inspired fusion of peach and honey flavors — a carbonated, rapturous reimagination of classic peach iced tea wearing a deep golden hue. The conceptual flavor has been a permanent menu fixture since its debut in 2019. Just as the nondescript tropical-lime flavor of Baja Blast was designed to pair with the seasoned beef and Mexican-inspired flavors served at Taco Bell, Mountain Dew's Sweet Lightning flavor was formulated to complement the taste of KFC's Original Recipe fried chicken. That peach-honey sweetness helps offset and balance the salty, savory flavor of fried chicken. Meanwhile, the soda's effervescent fizz can cut through heavier, richer menu items like mashed potatoes and buttery biscuits. "With the addition of Sweet Lightning, we now have a drink that is as unique to KFC as the Colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices," Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer of KFC U.S., shared in a press release.

Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning is the peach-honey sipper that fried chicken has been missing

This Southern-inspired soda had apparently been in the works for some time. Parent company PepsiCo filed a trademark for "MTN DEW SWEET LIGHTNING" earlier that year in March. At the time, the new Mountain Dew flavor marked only the second foray into chain-exclusive territory for Mountain Dew; its creative team had developed Baja Blast for Taco Bell nearly 15 years prior. Notably, KFC and Taco Bell are both owned by the Yum! Brands portfolio.

A 2018 Reddit thread from Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning's release shortly thereafter raves about the then-new soda. For some customers, the release even spurred renewed interest in the chain. "Wonder if this is at every KFC?" one commenter wrote, adding, "I haven't been in years but new Dew would get me in the door." Since then, Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning has continued to hit the spot, according to fans online. A more recent Reddit post is filled with similarly glowing reviews, with one poster noting, "I like the peach in it, very flavorful 8/10." Another Redditor writes, "Love it wish came in a 12 pack."

Once a Taco Bell exclusive, Mountain Dew Baja Blast has since expanded to be sold in cans at grocery retailers like Target and Walmart. Whether another KFC-centered expansion is in the cards for the future remains to be seen. Several years ago, information was leaked on Reddit detailing plans for an alleged limited store release of Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning in 20-ounce bottles scheduled for the summer of 2022. The claim was never officially confirmed by the company, but bottled versions of Baja Blast were released as a limited-time product that same summer. At least for now, Mountain Dew's golden, peach-honey Sweet Lightning flavor can only be purchased at KFC locations nationwide.
