12 Banana-Flavored Coffee Chain Drinks, Ranked
When you think of flavored coffees and drinks, you might picture vanilla, hazelnut, and perhaps chocolate. How many flavorings did you name before banana popped up? For some, it might be top of mind, but others might not have thought of it at all. As for me, I'm not entirely new to enjoying banana-flavored coffee. I've had them over the past couple of years, but I've noticed an uptick in availability. When I tried it a couple of years ago, it was novel and interesting, and the only place I'd seen it was Dutch Bros, only because it has like a bajillion flavoring options. Then I started seeing TikTok videos on how to make banana syrup using banana peels, which I promptly tried. (It's really good, by the way).
Now that banana beverages are more prevalent, I went around to various coffee shop chains to get banana-flavored beverages — a mix of coffee, matcha, chai, and mocha options. As for the ranking, flavor was the most important factor; therefore, I thought it was important not only to taste the banana but also to taste all the drink's elements. The banana and the drink as a whole should taste good. I found some new favorites and some duds along the way. Next time you're at one of these coffee shops, you might consider one of these sippers.
12. Black Rock Coffee Bar Hot Chai with Banana
Black Rock Coffee Bar didn't have a specific banana drink on the menu, so I opted to add the banana flavoring to a couple of foundational drinks. Hot Chai with Banana, as it turned out, was the worst drink I tried by a landslide. Everything else was easy sipping compared to that. The chai was extremely sweet; a sugary concoction that left me gasping for a cup of water. It also tasted somewhat horchata-like, with a very slight hint of cinnamon. I can't say I picked up on any tea flavor or spices that I associate with chai. The sweetness and banana flavor overpowered everything in this application.
The banana flavor wasn't great either because it almost tasted like the banana-flavored Nerds. When I saw the color, it seemed extremely light, and it ultimately yielded an unpleasant drink. It more resembled banana, milk, and cinnamon candy than a chai latte. I was not a fan and wouldn't want to get this again. For taste tests, I typically save my drinks and have them the next day (strain the ice and store in the fridge), but I genuinely did not want to subject myself to drinking this again. So, I tossed it. I've never done that before, but I guess there's a first for everything.
11. Dutch Bros Banana Split Hot Latte
I've been to Dutch Bros plenty of times and find that the drinks truly vary. The Banana Split Latte is a "secret" menu item; that's what Dutch calls it. I found the drink in the app, and it's also available on the website, so I'm not sure how secret it is. This beverage uses the latte base of 2% milk and espresso, plus vanilla, banana, and dark chocolate flavors to get the final product. Though this drink ranks very low, it was considerably better than the Black Rock banana chai creation.
However, this suffered from a similar lack of flavor as it mostly tasted like milk. Where was the espresso? I'll never know, but sometimes my Dutch Bros lattes taste like the espresso was forgotten in the shuffle of all other syrups and additions. Somehow, it also tasted watery, like they added milk and flavoring to an Americano. The banana flavoring was better and less candy-like, and it wasn't gross enough to toss, but it still didn't hit the mark I was looking for. I can't say that I'd recommend this drink either.
10. Dutch Bros Banana Bread Iced Mocha
Next up is another creation from Dutch Bros: Banana Bread Iced Mocha. The drink made its debut in early 2026 as part of its breakfast-inspired menu additions. You can get it with the soft top, which is like Dutch Bros' version of cold foam. This beverage employs the brand's mocha base of chocolate milk and espresso, which is a pretty cool combination that's somewhat unique compared to other coffee shops. Then there is the banana and hazelnut flavoring, a combination that makes it multidimensional and interesting beyond a basic coffee or latte.
Compliments aside, it was a little milky, with less espresso flavor than I would like. This is where the drink could use the most improvement. While it tasted better than the previous two picks, there was still a lot going on; this made it hard to focus on any one thing. The espresso felt secondary, and for that reason it has to rank low. The flavors of chocolate, banana, and hazelnut worked nicely, but they overshadowed the coffee, creating a clear lack of equilibrium. If you want a mocha option from Dutch Bros, try the Hopscotch Protein Mocha, which is the best on its protein menu.
9. Black Rock Coffee Bar Iced Latte with Banana
Thankfully, Black Rock Coffee Bar partially redeemed itself with the Iced Latte (2% milk and espresso) with banana syrup. You can conclude from the name that it's simply a nice latte with banana flavoring. The iced latte was wonderfully strong and coffee-centric; the banana was quite fragrant and potent as well. It seems to work better in this capacity than in the chai, where it turned into a cloying, unbeatable syrup.
I could taste the banana flavoring long after the sip was gone, and it had a different flavor than the other coffee chain's banana flavorings — almost like it was meant to mimic the nuances of ripe banana rather than banana alone. I think the key here is that I got a large drink, which ultimately ramped up the espresso notes, since it came with three espresso shots (I clarified this before buying it). I have had multiple beverages from Black Rock Coffee Bar, so I think you have to be strategic in what you get and really home in on those flavorings; I find it is harder to mess up a latte because it's generally similar at various chains — a combination of espresso, milk, and your desired flavoring. Even so, there are some better banana flavor drinks and lattes to come.
8. Dutch Bros Banana Bread Cold Brew
Black Rock Coffee Bar and Dutch Bros make up the bottom portion of this ranking, clearly. The Banana Bread Cold Brew was actually an enticing offering. This had a smooth, banana-sweet flavor, and everything felt well-rounded and balanced. They asked me if I wanted any milk or a soft top, but I just wanted to order it as it comes. I was really pleased I chose that option. Adding a little flavor to a cold brew is a great way to add a smidge of dimension without completely distracting from the brew's taste.
Once you add milk in addition to flavoring, it can easily distract and send the drink off-kilter, which was the case with the lower-ranking drinks. The cold brew was incredibly pleasant and mellow. And to me, it opened doors to Dutch Bros options I wasn't aware of; I typically get a latte, so a flavored cold brew feels fresh and new. I feel like I would go this route again because I frequently find Dutch Bros drinks overly milky and/or sweet, to the point where they hardly taste like coffee. This delivers both aspects of its name with the best balance thus far, but there are better picks to come.
7. Starbucks Iced Banana Bread Chai
Joyfully, Starbucks' Iced Banana Bread Chai version was vastly better than Black Rock's. This was actually tasty and enjoyable to sip on. The combination thoroughly surprised me because it kind of tasted like banana bread — more than other options calling themselves banana bread-flavored, that is. The chai base offered a delightful medley of spices; it just tasted cozy and fantastic. Every time I make banana bread, I add all kinds of warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and this truly delivered a similar profile.
That said, the chai base is a little lackluster and light on the tea flavor, which would help ground it. I have encountered this issue before when I taste-tested Starbucks and Dunkin' chai lattes. Both were pretty boring then too. I don't think it's the best chai — guess I'll have to keep hunting for the best chai latte — but it is a good Starbucks offering. And that was thanks to the banana flavoring that brought a unique and enticing complexity. The concoction used 2% milk, banana syrup, chai tea concentrate, and brown sugar cold foam as the basis. There are lots of tasty chai drinks from Starbucks, and this deserves a spot on the list.
6. Peet's Coffee Protein Banana Matcha Oat Latte
Peet's Coffee has a lot of stellar caffeinated sippers, and the Protein Banana Matcha Oat Latte is among them. While I appreciated the aesthetics, it also had a well-rounded, interesting taste. The banana here is more subtle than anything I've mentioned because it uses fruit puree. The addition made it more natural and better incorporated into the beverage. There was also whey protein, oat milk, and ceremonial-grade matcha.
This beverage is perfect for those who don't want such an intense banana flavor. I have always found that the protein aspect of protein beverages tends to dominate the taste, since whey provides a distinctly milky flavoring. That addition along with milk or alternative milks often makes a beverage taste even creamier, and that was the case here. The whey protein was the prominent profile, followed by that matcha-oat combination, then banana. It was almost too light on the banana, if you ask me. I liked the uniqueness of this, which gives it a boost over the Starbucks banana chai, but the execution of the banana was a bit too light-handed to make it higher on my list.
5. Peet's Coffee Protein Banana Cold Brew Smoothie
I actually ordered the Protein Banana Cold Brew Oat Latte as it was one of two banana-flavored options I found on Peet's online menu. So when I ended up with the Protein Banana Cold Brew Smoothie, I was kind of happy to try the banana in a new format. They asked if I wanted my drink remade to what I ordered, but I said it was fine. I happily sipped my smoothie instead. This was one of the better-balanced protein drinks I've had from a coffee shop, and I've had dozens at this point.
There were notes of milk and whey protein, as expected, but the banana tasted authentic and more noticeable than in the previous Peet's beverage. Plus, the layer of cold brew at the bottom made the drink refreshing and grounding. This sipper was surprisingly filling. Unexpectedly, it was a fantastic combination. I've never had anything exactly like it before and would be interested in trying to replicate it at home. The banana helps mellow the oat milk and whey protein, while the cold brew brings it together in a fresh format that I kept thinking about long after finishing it — yep, I sipped it all. It was the most unique and captivating of everything so far, but the banana is still pretty light-handed. A few more options are coming that have a better balance of flavors.
4. Starbucks Iced Banana Bread Matcha
I think the Iced Banana Bread Matcha is Starbucks' best matcha offering, and I've tried everything it has on the menu. It was generally a fantastic combination. The earthiness of the matcha truly helped create a scrumptious balance, keeping it from leaning too milky or too banana-y. I could taste everything, which is a major reason it ranks so high. A lot of the lower-ranked beverages were too imbalanced, too sweet, or too ... well, something. This was a solid sipper from start to finish. The banana was pleasant and fruity, yet not overwhelming. The cinnamon dolce sprinkles and brown sugar cream cold foam delivered some warmth and further flavor intrigue to help it taste somewhat like banana bread. They were placed on top, so they didn't make the drink too potent, which I appreciated.
I will say that the matcha is kind of light, though, which keeps it from ranking higher. Still, this matcha was so easy to gulp down that it was hard to stop, and that's a telltale sign of a good, flavorful drink. I'd be pleased to order it again. While Starbucks has somewhere around 29,000 locations, this sipper might not be so easy to track down. One location was out when I was attempting to place my order (according to the Starbucks app), so you might have to search for this seasonal flavor if it's not already being phased out.
3. Better Buzz Banana Matcha
Better Buzz is a West Coast coffee chain with most of its locations in California and a handful in Arizona and Nevada. I've been to the chain multiple times and was pretty pleased with the overall flavor of what I've previously had, but it was different pitting it against other chains in the context of this taste test. This Banana Matcha ranks so high because the drink was executed wonderfully. The matcha was marvelously deep and grassy, which is exactly what I like — the color was considerably darker than Starbucks' version.
The beverage had enough milkiness, and the banana came from the cold foam, so it started as two completely separate ideas that melded together the more I sipped or stirred. If you drink from a straw, you primarily get the green taste of matcha, but when you sip from the top, you get the banana milkiness of the cold cream. The more you drink, the more they swirl into a cohesive flavor. Alternatively, you can always mix them from the start. I liked the banana chips on top, which were a nice touch, but the flavor and execution alone are enough to earn this third place. This was well-made and flavorful from top to bottom.
2. Starbucks Iced Banana Bread Latte
Starbucks makes it pretty high up, which is both impressive and fascinating. I can't deny that it produced one of the best banana beverages of the bunch. This Iced Banana Bread Latte was a perfect combination; the blonde espresso makes a big difference, adding a grounding note that kept it from being too sweet or fruity. It yielded a lighter flavor but still provided the intensity I seek in espresso drinks. It was earthy, banana-forward, creamy, and the latte resulted in a flavorful combination.
It was a bit sweet, but I assume you can only get so much banana flavor from a syrup without some form of sweetness. The drink called for 2% milk, banana syrup, blond espresso, and the same cold foam and sprinkles as the Starbucks matcha. Everything appeared together nicely, but they worked individually as well; that is the foundation of a good drink. This was whimsical and delicious, and I'd absolutely add this to my regular drink order. For something less sweet, omit the sprinkles and get regular cinnamon over top instead. I'll do that next time.
1. Better Buzz Banana Pudding Best Drink Ever
I have actually had the Banana Pudding Best Drink Ever before (a couple of weeks before writing this article), and it left an impression on me — I was happy to try it again for work purposes. This beverage was made with the brand's Classic Best Drink Ever, which is an Americano (water and espresso) with what the chain calls its signature creamy vanilla. Then this banana iteration has a house-made banana pudding cold cream and the delightfully crunchy vanilla wafer cookie.
I got a kick out of the Nilla wafer on top. It really drove home the banana pudding aspect and created a memorable marker that helped Better Buzz stand out from larger chains that don't pay quite as much attention to detail. The one thing I will say is that there was very little ice, and the drink came almost slightly warm, like they poured hot espresso directly on ice and it completely melted. It inevitably cooled off thanks to the minimal amount of ice, but I noticed this the last time I had the drink, too. Still, the flavors were really nice. The espresso was a deeper color and tasted strong. The milk didn't tone it down, and then the banana cream on top tied it together. Unfortunately, though, banana is only a limited-time flavor. Snag it while you can, or you might have to wait until next year.
Methodology
I went to five chain coffee shops to scoop up the drinks and sipped them immediately after photographing them; this ensured the drinks were fresh and as unwatered-down or compromised as possible — it was quite hot during the week of my taste test. I took photos inside or near the store (for Dutch Bros, which has no interior) for continuity between stores. I wrote my notes — opting to go with similar drinks across different chains, such as lattes, chai, and matcha, to better compare them rather than choosing random banana drinks.
Some of these were designated as banana menu items, and others resulted from my request to have banana flavoring added to a standard beverage. Some places, like Dunkin', did not offer banana sippers at the time of writing, even though it did in the past; it's a shame because I really loved the banana bevvies when I tried them in the spring. I ultimately judged them based on how well the banana flavoring was incorporated into the drink, whether I could taste all the flavors or if anything was particularly underwhelming or overpowering, and how pleasant it was to drink.
