Goodbye Wendy's — This Is Now America's Second Largest Burger Chain
The fast food burger is practically synonymous with American culture, and the country's biggest burger chains are constantly vying for the top spot in sales, expansion, and market share. McDonald's remains the largest burger chain in the U.S., while Wendy's has come in second place for the past six years. Wendy's struggles in 2026, however, have seen another chain supersede it. Home of the flame-grilled Whopper, Burger King is now the second-largest burger chain in America.
Wendy's U.S. same-restaurant sales decreasing by 7% in the most recent quarter amid six consecutive quarters of decline (via Fox Business) is a major contributing factor to this shift. Though Wendy's has long been lauded for its Frosty desserts and square burger patties, the return of the (Burger) King has knocked the chain down to third place. Burger King's successful comeback after years of hit-or-miss loyalty has seen its same-store sales increase by approximately 8.5%.
Wendy's CEO Bob Wright has pointed to several challenges that may help explain the chain's recent shortcomings, including customer traffic, the value offered to customers, and the financial performance of its franchisees. Wright also noted the efforts already underway to mount a turnaround for the brand. These include focusing on value and quality for its menu items, optimizing the digital experience to promote recurring customers, and refreshing its marketing, among other initiatives.
Why Burger King now ranks second
With a number of fast food restaurants making changes in 2026, one of the most significant was Burger King's revamp of its signature product, the Whopper. Taking customer feedback into consideration, the burger chain opted to give its old favorite a few new upgrades. These included swapping in a higher-quality bun, serving the burger in a box instead of just a wrapper to maintain the structural integrity of the sandwich, and other updates to the sauces and condiments. Though these tweaks were seemingly minor, the transformation and the accompanying marketing campaign appear to have paid off.
Burger King's recent success has even rivaled that of industry leader McDonald's in some areas. Although the chain is still second to McDonald's overall, Burger King saw an 8.5% increase in U.S. sales compared to McDonald's 0.8% increase over approximately the same time period. Its elevated Whopper also managed to garner more positive reviews and Google searches than McDonald's Big Arch in early 2026. Together, these wins give Burger King even more reason to celebrate its new second-place spot.
