Reddit Remembers The 'Fixins' And Fries At One Of The '90s Best Burger Spots

Nineties nostalgia is en vogue at the moment and with good reason. Looking back at beloved burgers of yesteryear is something of a favorite pastime for Redditors, many of whom hold one specific burger chain in high regard. According to a myriad of Reddit comments, Fuddruckers was — and still is — the spot for the best burgers.

First founded in 1980 in San Antonio, Texas by Phil Romano, the burger chain grew quickly over the next 20 years, peaking in popularity in the '90s. Fuddruckers was known for baking its buns fresh in house daily, serving burger patties grilled to order, and offering a build-it-yourself toppings bar including unlimited cheese sauce that allowed you to fully customize your meal. 

Fervent fans on Reddit fondly remember the burgers, with one stating, "used to have one here and i was addicted to it for years, their burgers are the best ever." One Redditor enthuses, "Yeah their burgers were good, fixins were great. That cheese sauce on the fries mm." Another Reddit comment mentions, "Haven't seen one in years, loved their burgers and serve yourself topping bar," while a reply notes that toppings bar was enough to assemble a serving of salad. Both the wedge and regular fries are also enthusiastically recollected. "I'm sure the burger is fantastic but those friiiiies my guy. Give me a bite," said one Redditor. "You could also create a potato wedges 'nachos' too, with cheese sauce, onions, tomato's, and jalapeños." Recalled one Fuddruckers fixins fan.

Despite the appealing "fixins" and fries, the burger brand faced issues in the early 2000s, first filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2010 and almost disappearing entirely in 2020 due to major financial issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Albeit narrowly, this restaurant chain survived bankruptcy, though with only a smattering of locations that remain – Fuddruckers has dwindled to around 40 restaurants. Adding to that, it's also among the most expensive burger chains in the U.S. 

Still, fans with a Fuddruckers nearby tout the virtues of the '90s darling. One Redditor shares, "My husband and I drive 45 minutes just for their burgers and their FRIES.. oh mama mia." Some Redditors have also queried about where to find a copycat recipe for the burger chain's famed cheese sauce. 

Although it's a rarity to find a Fuddruckers nearby, seeking out this so-called best burger spot might be worth the roadtrip. If Fuddruckers is too out of the way, you can always assemble a DIY burger bar at home for a small taste of '90s nostalgia.
