This Donut Chain Sells The Worst Glazed Donut (But It's Also One Of The Cheapest)
Donuts may have been a treat that you loved as a child, but if you have a sweet tooth as an adult, chances are you won't say no to a yeasty, sweet, glazed donut from time to time. Sure, you may argue that there are far better donut flavors out there (some of which you may be able to find in a grocery store bakery), but a classic glazed reliably hits the spot — right? Unfortunately, not every chain can do the classic glazed justice. When our taster tried several chain-glazed donuts, they found that one fell to the bottom of the pile relatively quickly: Voodoo.
Voodoo Doughnut, a nationwide chain with locations in major cities across the country, has a wide variety of donuts, and it's clear that glazed isn't its specialty. When our taster tried it, they found the inside to be quite doughy and heavy. Though the flavor was passable, texture-wise, this donut failed on nearly every front. Although it's comparatively inexpensive when put alongside some of the more premium options in the lineup (our taster paid $2 for a Voodoo donut, compared to $4.25 for the top-ranked choice), it's still a donut that our taster probably wouldn't venture to buy again — which is why you too are better off looking elsewhere to satisfy your glazed donut craving.
Voo-don't go here for a glazed donut
Folks are not shy about airing their grievances about Voodoo Doughnut on online forums like Reddit. On one Reddit thread about the chain, users noted that its flavors tend to be very sweet — and that its original Portland location is nothing short of a tourist trap. "While I get that tourists want to check the place out, it always boggles my mind when friends or family actually want to go to Voodoo," explained one Redditor. "Their donuts are mediocre at best, and there's plenty of much better shops around." Another piggybacked on those comments, adding, "I heard so much about this place and I have to say, it's one of the more overrated places I've visited."
On YouTube, one reviewer tried every single Voodoo flavor (from its most basic to its most whimsical offerings), though they could not give much feedback about this glazed donut specifically. However, they did comment that its size was impressive. "You can't rate this thing any lower than average," they said. And in a world where there are terrific glazed donuts that you'd go out of your way for, it just doesn't make sense to order one from Voodoo.
