Shake Shack Debuts 2 Ultra-Exclusive Super Mario Bros Menu Items

In the world of fast food cheeseburgers, precious few do it like Shake Shack. But burgers and the titular "shakes" are far from the only offerings that have graced the fast food giant's repertoire over the years. Diehard fans won't soon forget when Shake Shack released a line of candles scented like "Shake N Fries" and "Burger in the Park." Now, the chain is back with two ultra-exclusive menu items in anticipation of Nintendo and Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which follows the adventures of one of the most widely beloved and recognized characters in video game history.

Why "ultra" exclusive? Per a press release sent to Tasting Table, fans can only get these two items at the Shake Shack location in DUMBO, Brooklyn at 2 Water St. Plus, they're only available for an ultra-limited time: one weekend, Friday, March 31 through Sunday, April 2. To ring in the event, the DUMBO store is decked out with décor inspired by the animated video game world of the new Mario Bros. film.

Shake Shack's Instagram story gives fans glimpses of giant Mario-esque mushrooms, massive question-mark prize cubes, and likenesses of Peach, Toad, Shy Guys, and other characters from the Mario world. So far, before noon on the first day of the promotion, celebrities like Chance the Rapper and DJ Mick have already stopped by to check out the festivities. But the real star of the show is Shake Shack's two new menu items: the 'Shroom burger and Gold Star Shake.

Meet the 'Shroom Burger and Gold Star Shake

Per a press release sent to Tasting Table, the 'Shroom burger is a fried portabella mushroom, filled and loaded with four different cheeses (cheddar, muenster, fontina, and parmesan). The whole thing is topped with pepperoni and arugula and slathered in Shake Shack's Calabrian chili tomato Fire Sauce. Thirsty after your burger? Shake Shack pretty regularly switches up its shake flavors, but the Gold Star Shake is no ordinary custard treat — it has a dried star fruit garnish. The shake is pink-swirled peach and strawberry with blue sprinkles and whipped cream. A Mario-themed meal isn't the only treat in store for fans, either. On all three days of the promotion, the first 100 customers to visit the DUMBO Shake Shack will receive a free Mario Bros.-inspired swag bag filled with apparel and gear.

It's all well and good for New York-based Shake Shack and Mario fans. But what about literally everybody else? The restaurant chain is launching a nationwide sweepstakes to give fans a chance to win a free ticket to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." To enter, simply order a 'Shroom burger via Shake Shack's mobile app or on its website between March 30 through Sunday, April 2. Or, enter your info and apply on the sweepstakes website — no purchase necessary. (Sweepstakes rules here.) One thousand lucky entrants will be selected, and winners will be announced on April 4 — just in time for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which premieres in theaters nationwide on April 5.
