  • Biergarten Bar And Drinks | San Francisco, CA

Al fresco beer drinking shouldn't be a novelty. Elsewhere in America, it's commonplace; in Germany, it's a way of life. But until Biergarten opened last week, there was not a single German-style beer garden within city limits. Thanks to the owners of Suppenküche, the eagle has finally landed. When the outdoor courtyard opens at 3 p.m., the sun floods the long communal tables, and the employees working within the shipping container--from whence beer is dispensed and food ordered--wear sunglasses as they fill oversize steins.

  • City Beer Store | SoMa, San Francisco, CA

That can of Tecate you're drinking may be sweetly ironic, but should you be ready to hop down the beer rabbit hole, City Beer Store awaits. A recent remodel of the SoMa space has expanded it beyond its original iteration as a retail shop with a small bar into a retail shop with a comparatively large bar. Now, owner Craig Wathen has the space to offer an impressive collection of bottle-aged beers. Some have never been released to the public; they're so rare that the store has only a half-dozen bottles.

  • Ram's Gate Winery And Estate Vineyards

The new Ram's Gate Winery aims to make great Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and other wines under winemaker Jeff Gaffner. But its way of welcoming guests may be even more ambitious. Hospitality Manager Marc Hartenfels was hired from Benu to welcome guests to the scenic grounds, a 30-acre property about 45 minutes north of San Francisco at the southern end of the Carneros AVA (Carneros means "rams" in Spanish). Ram's Gate does not have a formal restaurant, but it has Jason Rose, late of Locanda, who has designed a menu of smart, affordable small plates.
