String cheese is a classic lunchbox snack. It's portable, fun to eat, and requires no preparation at all. But if you haven't had a string cheese since grade school, now's a good time to change that. These days you'll find a wide variety of options and brands to fit your needs. If you're not sure where to start, though, we have just the suggestion for you. In our recent ranking of 10 string cheese brands, we ranked Lucerne's Mozzarella String Cheese as number one.

If you've never heard of Lucerne before, it's probably because it's an Albertsons store brand. This means you'll only find it if you shop at Albertsons or one of its stores, like Safeway or ACME. But, if you are lucky enough to spot it, we highly recommend picking up a package of its string cheese.

According to our writer, the part skim mozzarella cheese has an incredibly bold and intense flavor described as having a "clean dairy finish" that's even better than Galabani's whole milk selection. In addition to its standout flavor, Lucerne's string cheese is soft and stringy, meaning that it peels quite well, despite having a slightly processed texture.

Lucerne's cheeses are usually hit or miss

We were surprised that Lucerne's string cheese came out on top, mainly because its cheeses have been hit or miss in the past. In fact, in our ranking of 10 store-bought cheddar cheeses, Lucerne's extra sharp cheddar came in last for its mild flavor and moist texture. However, online reviews for the brand's string cheese seem to support our writer's assessment.

One reviewer wrote, "This is the creamiest string cheese and the only one I buy. So much better [than] the others!" Other commenters have also used the word "creamy" to describe this string cheese, in addition to "delicious," "flavorful," "fresh," and "excellent." Beyond the quality, shoppers seem to be satisfied with its pricing, too.

In general, Lucerne is well-respected for its reasonable prices. In fact, one reviewer even said that the string cheese's taste is "just as good as the high end brands." So, if you're on the hunt for a high quality string cheese at a reasonable price point, Lucerne is worth checking out.

As always, there are shoppers who have disliked Lucerne's string cheese. One shopper noted that it has an "almost fake taste to it," which might be in reference to the processed texture our writer noted. Others called it "very salty" and wrote that it "didn't really 'string' when pulled.'" Clearly, reviews are mixed, but if you ask us, Lucerne's string cheese is one you should definitely grab on your next shopping trip.
