For many people who love sandwiches, bacon is a magical ingredient that turns a good meal into a great one — adding smoky flavor and plenty of crunch. If you like making crispy oven-baked strips at home, then there's a good chance you've experienced some not-so-good, rubbery bacon out in the wild. The next time you're at Subway, a simple request can get you crispier meat on your sandwich every time.

According to one YouTuber, the trick is to ask the Subway employee making your sandwich to double-toast it. Subway bacon is precooked and isn't raw, but when someone orders a sandwich with bacon, the meat gets toasted before getting put on the sandwich. But if you then return the whole thing to get toasted in the oven, your strips will come out nice and crispy. Note that this doesn't work if you toast only the bacon for two cycles; the YouTuber found that the meat burned by the end of the second round that way.

If you want crispier bacon, expect inconsistencies

While the double-toasting process definitely gets bacon crispy, it's not foolproof. If the oven at your Subway location has hot spots, there's a chance that the edges of the strips could end up extra well done. Other Subway employees have attested to the ovens being hit or miss at their locations, so expect some inconsistency.

Keep in mind that toasted subs have been a Subway staple since 2004, and the average sandwich is toasted for roughly 20 to 25 seconds — so a double-toasted portion of bacon might be toasted for up to 50 seconds with this method. For a loose point of comparison, some brands of precooked bacon from the grocery store list about 30 seconds as the ideal microwave time for crispy strips. While microwaves and Subway's ovens heat food differently, this suggests that the additional cooking time could be enough to get the bacon a tad over-crispy. Luckily, since the bacon is presumably incorporated into the sandwich with other ingredients during the second toasting cycle, it's less likely to bear the brunt of all the heat during the process and probably won't burn.

We're fans of Subway. In our ranking of its sandwiches, the All American Club, which includes bacon, even earned our No. 1 spot — so the next time you order it, don't be afraid to request it double-toasted. It may require waiting, but it's worth it to enjoy crispy bacon on your sandwich.
