When most people go to a fast food restaurant, they're not exactly looking for a luxury experience where someone sets down a white tablecloth for them — they just want to order, grab their meal, and go without experiencing any major inconveniences. Unfortunately, though, at too many fast food joints, they're not even getting that. Customers have to deal with rude, probably overworked, and poorly treated staff members, missing or incorrect menu items, and corporate customer service lines that rarely respond. Combine that with the rising price of fast food, and there are plenty of diners out there who are wondering whether it's even worth going to these kinds of spots in the first place.

But which fast food chains are most guilty of these customer service crimes? We're taking a closer look at the food chains customers complain about most online. We've consulted many Reddit threads to get a better sense of what customers are saying about certain brands' customer service and where it falls flat. So, yeah, you might still crave your favorite Taco Bell menu item after reading these complaints, but they might just make you question whether you want to deal with the headache of these chains' poor customer service.

Burger King

Burger King's Whopper is one of the most beloved fast food menu items of all time, so we totally understand why customers keep going back for it. But there are only so many times you can deal with bad customer service before your burger starts tasting a little less delicious. Unfortunately, there are more than a few complaints about Burger King's bad customer service on Reddit, and there's no denying that customers are absolutely annoyed.

In a thread where someone was asking about which chain restaurants had the worst customer service, someone called out BK specifically and left it at that. Some reviews provide more details, though. Another customer ordered three fries, but they only received two, and they were half-filled. They also received a slushie that wasn't even full, and it was the wrong flavor, too. So, understandably, they asked for their order to be fixed, but the staff couldn't do anything. After speaking to someone who claimed to be a manager, the customer decided they wanted a refund. Since they ordered on the app, though, they couldn't just get a refund then and there. Instead, they had to spend time going back and forth with the support staff through the app just to get their money back.

Others have had similar problems with the online support staff. Posters have also called out the AI tech Burger King is using, which apparently doesn't even always work. Who wants to go through all that hassle for a burger and fries?

McDonald's

Now, if you frequent fast food restaurants with any regularity, then it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that McDonald's doesn't have the best customer service. Considering how poorly McDonald's employees are paid, we can't really blame them for not providing a stellar customer service experience — how are you going to do your best work when you're worried about just making ends meet? But as a customer, this makes for a less-than-pleasant fast food experience. Perhaps that's why Redditors have said that McDonald's has the worst customer service of any restaurant chain out there, with claims that it's what the chain is known for.

A McDonald's customer took to the r/McDonalds subreddit to discuss just how bad the service had gotten at the restaurant. They said that every time they visit, they can basically expect that something will be wrong in the order. And if you actually want to place an order at the front counter? Good luck. According to their account, you may be waiting there for a while, since staff members aren't very responsive to people actually inside the restaurant.

Yet another Redditor claimed that the soda machine was down on their visit, so they ended up getting flat Coke poured from a two-liter instead of the fountain soda they craved. They asked if McDonald's was even making an effort at customer service anymore (which is just one of many customer complaints against the brand).

Popeyes

There are plenty of fast food chicken chains to choose from, but Popeyes is one of the few we know of that focuses on Cajun and Creole flavors, offering a bolder profile than you'll find at most chicken spots. But enjoying the food is one thing, and appreciating the Southern fast food chain's customer service is something else entirely. The latter seems harder to do, given the customer service complaints some diners have lodged on Reddit.

A customer asked the r/Popeyes subreddit, "Why is it every Popeyes has the absolute [worst] customer service out of any place I've ever been to?" They called out having to wait at the drive-thru speaker for five minutes, only to be told that the cashier could only take exact change, along with a few other specific, annoying situations. Other Redditors have posed a similar question, wondering why Popeyes has such terrible customer service, regardless of which location you go to. And in a thread of restaurants known for bad customer service, Popeyes appeared way more often than most of the others.

You may get lucky at your local Popeyes, but there's a good chance the ordering process won't be as smooth as you'd like. Whether the food at Popeyes is still worth it is a decision every fast food chicken fan has to make for themselves.

Wendy's

Wendy's may be one of the fast food restaurants customers trust most for quality, but it's not exactly known for its customer service — at least not according to various Redditors who have complained about the service they've received at the chain. One commenter said they placed a mobile order, were confused about where to park to pick it up, and ultimately had to cancel because it was taking so long. Then they had trouble reaching customer service on the mobile app as well. Fast food is supposed to be convenient, and this situation sounds anything but.

Another person ostensibly ordered off the app, but when they got their sandwich, they realized the order was wrong. Apparently, this wasn't the first time that had happened to them. But when they tried to get help from the app, the chat function didn't work. Even when they tried calling the listed number, they couldn't reach anyone. They were at a loss about how to even move forward from there. Even delivery drivers have had problems with the restaurant's customer service. Perhaps that's why so many customers consider Wendy's to be a fast food restaurant known for horrible service.

Jack in the Box

If you're ordering fast food but don't know exactly what you want, Jack in the Box is the place to go. It has a wide range of menu items, including some unique dishes that you won't find at other chains. But if you're looking for excellent customer service, it might not be the best option, according to some customers. One Jack in the Box customer complained about "incredibly poor service," citing long wait times, rude employees, and wrong orders. Fast food restaurants should offer low prices and serve food quickly, according to this poster, but that's apparently not what they found at the chain.

Another customer received strange instructions to reverse in the drive-thru from a Jack in the Box employee after they'd already handed over their credit card. And yet another, who said that they'd been going to Jack in the Box their entire life, had such a terrible experience ordering from the chain's app that they were thinking of never going back to the restaurant again. Of course, this is one more chain that Redditors think is notorious for bad customer service, so maybe none of these mishaps should come as a big surprise.

Dunkin'

Sometimes, you just need a little caffeinated pick-me-up before work, which is exactly when you might decide to pop by Dunkin'. But have you ever noticed that the service can be less than stellar? That's the kind of experience many customers have had with the brand. After a Reddit customer placed a mobile order at their local Dunkin', they realized the road to the store was closed. They tried to cancel the order on the app but soon found it was impossible because they couldn't get a timely response. This poster wondered whether customer service even existed at the company anymore.

Customers who claim to be regulars have said they were treated so disrespectfully at Dunkin' that they didn't want to go back at all. But perhaps the worst Dunkin' customer experience of them all is when a Reddit user paid for 50 Munchkins at the ordering kiosk, was then told that the store didn't actually have them, and couldn't even get a refund. Even though they'd reached out to the company for more support, they hadn't heard back. That's a pretty egregious customer service oversight. Dunkin' might be a fast food place, but you at least expect to get the food you paid for.

Taco Bell

There's nothing like a late-night Taco Bell run, but it sounds like you have to be mentally prepared to deal with a less-than-ideal customer service situation when you go. A Reddit user asked r/tacobell why the restaurant's customer service was so bad, saying that they weren't able to place an order at their local Taco Bell because the screens were down. The poster had negative experiences at this location before, so they weren't totally surprised, but they still seemed baffled at just how bad the service was. They screenshotted ratings for Taco Bell locations in their area to illustrate just how low they were, indicating that they weren't the only one with a problem.

Another Taco Bell goer found a huge piece of plastic in their Taco Bell order and tried to reach out to corporate to lodge a complaint, but hadn't had any luck. You'd think the company would want to rectify the situation, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It's understandable for customers to be annoyed by this sort of lack of customer service, which is why we totally empathize with those on Reddit who question if Taco Bell even has customer service anymore at all.

Methodology

To determine which fast food chains should end up on this list, I sought out social media mentions about which chains had the worst customer service. All of the hits I found ended up coming from Reddit, where it seems like customers are most likely to share their negative customer service experiences with different brands.

I included restaurants that were mentioned multiple times by various users, with comments that specified why the poster thought the customer service at a given restaurant was so bad. I also looked for specific examples of poor service, rather than complaints that simply expressed dissatisfaction with a particular chain. While these accounts don't necessarily reflect the experiences of every customer or location, they offer insight into the service issues that have left some diners frustrated enough to speak out online.
