Give Your Next Breakfast Sandwich Sweet Flavor With This Little Debbie Bun Swap
The beauty of the breakfast sandwich lies in its versatility. Sausage, egg, and cheese; bacon, egg, and cheese; or a simple egg and cheese — the possibilities are endless. Don't even get us started on all the unique condiments you can use to upgrade those base ingredients, but the bread itself is an important component of a solid breakfast sandwich, too. From bagels to English muffins to sourdough bread, everyone has their go-to base. There's one unique bread choice you may have never considered, though: A Little Debbie Honey Bun.
Honey Buns certainly weren't our favorite Little Debbie snack in our ranking (that title went to the one-and-only Oatmeal Creme Pie), but pairing it with savory breakfast items truly gives it a whole new life. The buns are soft, sweet, and full of honey and cinnamon flavor. Much like pairing glazed donuts with sandwich fixings, pairing honey buns with salty bacon, savory eggs, and sharp cheddar creates an incredible contrast that's hard to resist.
There are a few ways to make this breakfast delight. If you're short on time, you can keep things simple and just add your fixings in between two Honey Buns as if they were two pieces of bread. If you have extra time, however, you'll definitely want to get those Honey Buns onto the stove (or Blackstone grill, if you have one). Grill them with butter and let them get nice and crispy before assembling your sandwich. This version is likely to be a bit messier, but it will be well worth it.
Honey Buns belong at your breakfast table
There are other ways to incorporate Honey Buns into your breakfast lineup, and we highly recommend beginning with French toast. While Honey Buns are sweet on their own, turning them into French toast gives them an even sweeter upgrade we'd certainly have a hard time passing up. You'd make it just like you'd make any other French toast, only instead of dipping plain bread into the egg and milk batter, you'd dip the Honey Buns.
To balance out the sweetness of this dish, consider serving it with cream cheese. Cream cheese is one of the best ingredients to stuff French toast with in the first place, and when you add Honey Buns to the equation, you take the whole dish to the next level. Cream cheese's slight tang contrasts well with the honey's sweetness. And if you don't want to miss out on a protein-packed breakfast, cream cheese paired with classic bagel sandwich toppings like eggs and bacon can transform French toast Honey Buns into the ultimate combination of the two. Try swapping in sausage or ham for the bacon alongside a slice of cheddar or American cheese, if you prefer, for another sweet-and-savory breakfast sandwich option.
