The beloved Texas-based ice cream brand Blue Bell has plenty of flavors that inspire fierce loyalty, from Homemade Vanilla to Buttered Pecan to Moo-llennium Crunch. But if you're in the mood for something a little more old-fashioned, there's a lesser-known option worth hunting down: Black Walnut. The vintage flavor is made with chopped black walnuts, delivering an earthy, nutty flavor that's unusual compared to the more familiar flavors lining the freezer aisle.

Unlike many of Blue Bell's most popular varieties, this flavor isn't a year-round offering. The company lists it among its rotational flavors, which include limited-time and regional varieties. This means finding a carton of Black Walnut isn't as easy as running to your local store — it depends on where you live and where you shop. Besides its scarcity, what makes the ice cream so special is the black walnut itself. There are actually two main types of walnuts: black walnuts and the more common English walnuts. Even though they belong to the same family, their flavors are quite different. Black walnuts have a bold, rustic character with earthy notes. It's much more assertive than the mild, slightly sweet walnuts found at your everyday grocery store.

In Blue Bell's version, chopped black walnuts provide a crunchy contrast to the smooth, creamy ice cream. The flavor has some similarities to Buttered Pecan, another classic Southern favorite, but it goes deeper with the nutty flavor. It also doesn't rely on any sugary mix-ins or elaborate swirls that the more modern flavors do. Instead, it focuses on dairy and nuts.

Black walnuts are popular in Midwestern and Southern desserts

That old-fashioned appeal is part of the attraction. Black walnuts actually have a long history in American desserts, particularly in regions like the Midwest and the South, where black walnut trees grow. The flavor is less common in these modern times, which makes it a nostalgic discovery for longtime fans and curious young ice cream adventurers. It's also why this underrated Blue Bell flavor still has a devoted following among fans who appreciate its unusual flavor. But even its online evangelists struggle to describe exactly what it tastes like. One Reddit commenter stated: "Well, black walnuts have a very distinct flavor. Nothing like regular walnuts. I'd say a bolder nut flavor, earthy...it's really very hard to explain." Meanwhile, another posted: "I used to work at [Baskin-Robbins], and we all agreed that black walnut tastes like dirt."

Believe it or not, black walnut was actually one of Baskin-Robbins' original 31 flavors when the brand launched in 1945. Though it's still listed as a permanent flavor in their U.S. nutrition guide, its availability varies by location. If you do manage to track down a carton, try it first on its own so you can appreciate the tannic, slightly bitter taste. Now, the taste of black walnuts probably won't appeal to everyone, and that's okay. That slightly woodsy taste is quite a departure from all the candy-studded, cookie-infused, brownie-filled flavors that dominate modern freezer aisles today. But for fans of vintage desserts and distinctive, regional flavors, that's exactly why they cherish it.
