This Burger Chain's Biscuits Outshine KFC And Chick-Fil-A
While everyone knows a good biscuit is homemade with a pinch of salt and a dash of Southern charm, you can still find high-quality options at chain restaurants, too. Chick-fil-A, for example, is often praised for its biscuits that are made in-store, while KFC is fairly synonymous with the phrase "and a biscuit on the side." Above Chick-fil-A's biscuits, surpassing those from KFC or even Cracker Barrel, we found that McDonald's buttery biscuits truly shine.
McDonald's didn't take the number one slot in our ranking of nine chain restaurant biscuits, but the chain's biscuits did come in fourth place, well ahead of many other competitors. We thoroughly enjoyed the flaky outer layer of these biscuits, which is coated in a glossy butter that helps make the entire thing both rich and crisp. It's the perfect mid-sized biscuit option, with a soft and doughy interior that pairs well with sweet or savory fillings. We found that McDonald's biscuits certainly could be improved upon, but still, these flaky little treats were good enough to catch our eye and earn themselves a spot that was decently high in our ranking.
McDonald's biscuits hold up well in a lineup
When it comes to breakfast at McDonald's, the biscuit lovers are willing to go to bat to defend their turf. "[The] biscuit is always better than [the] McMuffin," said one fan on Reddit, adding that the McDonald's biscuit is "soft and buttery." Another Redditor said that in comparison to the chain's English muffins, "Biscuits are 100x better ... McDonald's biscuits just hit so different." The Sausage Biscuit with Egg is a particular favorite that was rated highly in our ranking of McDonald's breakfast items, but the biscuits are also available as part of other sandwiches or all on their own.
There's a bit of debate about how and where McDonald's biscuits are made, though nothing has been officially confirmed or denied by the fast food giant. Some say that the biscuits arrive frozen, premade at another location and shipped to the restaurants for baking. Others argue that certain franchise owners insist on fresh preparation in-store every day, which can often affect quality. "I always found the biscuit to be a bit too crumbly and sometimes dry," said one Redditor. Though perhaps adding a hash brown would help keep biscuit sandwiches more structurally sound, among other McDonald's breakfast sandwich upgrades worth ordering. Even with their flaws, we were pleasantly surprised by how much better the McDonald's biscuits were, compared to those from popular competitor chains like Chick-fil-A and KFC.
