Werther's Original candies are one of many nostalgic and popular hard candy classics that you probably first tried at your grandparents' house. However you associate these caramels, there's no denying that rich, buttery caramel flavor that makes you want to suck on them forever. Werther's has expanded its repertoire to include different flavors and textures over the years. So, we sampled 12 Werther's Original caramels, ranking them according to mouthfeel, sweetness, balance, and overall enjoyability. The best Werther's candy flavor, hands down, is the Creamy Caramel Filled Hard Candies.

This flavor beat out the Original Caramel Hard Candies, as well as the chocolate varieties. The chocolate caramels come in hard and chewy variations, both of which ranked lower, as the chewy varieties tasted chalky and the chocolate itself was poor quality. While chocolate isn't Werther's forte, the Original Caramel Hard Candies are what the brand is known for, and they came in second place, offering a smooth mouthfeel and a long-lasting, buttery, toasty, caramel flavor that was perfectly balanced with a touch of salt. 

What the winning Creamy Caramel Filled Hard Candies bring to the table is both the high-caliber, sweet-and-salty flavor and glossy texture of the original hard candies, but with a luscious, creamy filling. Texturally, you get the best of both worlds; a hard, crunchy exterior to make the taste last longer, and a soft, gooey interior. That said, you can easily bite into the candy to get that chewy, melt-in-your mouth, salted caramel center, and the experience is just as satisfying.

We certainly thought that the Creamy Caramel Filled Hard Candies were a step up from Werther's Original Caramel Hard Candies, and customers were in agreement. Many thought the textural contrast of these treats was an elite and enjoyable experience that put the Creamy Caramel Filled Hard Candies a cut above the rest. A reviewer on the Walmart website stated, "Just the right amount of hard candy to suck on and then the soft, creamy caramel center for the finale." 

Other customers commended the smooth, creamy consistency of the filling for not sticking to their teeth like the softer, chewier versions. That said, some reviewers thought the hard candy coating was "too thin" and "would rather have the solid candies." However, out of over a thousand Walmart reviews for the 27-ounce pack of candies, 88% of shoppers left a 5-star rating, and there were few complaints about the overall flavor and texture.

One Walmart customer recommended enjoying these caramels with a cup of coffee or tea to balance the salty sweetness with bitter coffee notes or herbal tannins. Though the caramel flavor is clearly superior to the brand's chocolate candy flavors, you can still incorporate chocolate into your next Werther's experience by using the caramel-filled hard candies to top sweets, like a batch of white chocolate fudge.
