9 Chobani Zero Sugar Yogurts, Ranked
There are few snacks that are quite as filling and satisfying as a serving of yogurt. Although you can always eat your yogurt in a tangy, savory way, a lot of single-serve yogurt cups out there skew to the sweeter end of the spectrum. Whether you're looking for a lower-calorie option or you're simply watching your sugar intake, those sweet variations are not always ideal. This is where Chobani's Zero Sugar yogurts come in. The brand carries a standard line of sweetened yogurts, but these sugar-free versions replace the sugar with stevia leaf extract and monk fruit extracts. Though stevia leaf extract is anywhere from 200 to 400 times sweeter than standard table sugar, and monk fruit extract is 100 to 250 times sweeter, you don't taste quite as much sweetness as you do from the regular variety, but you're still getting those fruity and dessert-adjacent flavors you're looking for.
I decided to try every flavor in the Chobani Zero Sugar lineup and rank them from worst to best. The main criteria I use for this ranking is overall flavor, with special importance paid to the integration of that sweet stevia ingredient. I also consider how closely each fruity flavor resembles the fruit or ingredient it's meant to taste like. If you're trying to decide which Chobani Zero Sugar flavor to try first, you're in the right place.
9. Key Lime Pie
Don't get me wrong, I think key lime pie is an elite dessert, especially when it's homemade. If Chobani's Zero Sugar Key Lime Pie yogurt were to actually taste like real key lime pie, it would probably be one of my favorites. Unfortunately, though, that's absolutely not what you're getting with this product. Instead, I found that this yogurt tastes simply like plain lime, with an acidic note that feels overpowering. That being said, I could even get down with lime-flavored yogurt if it were leaning toward the more tangy end of the spectrum, but with that inclusion of the stevia leaf and monk fruit extracts, it doesn't taste good at all.
The real issue here is that there isn't any sort of pie-like element to this yogurt. If there were additions like graham cracker crumbles, it would make a huge difference. Even if you could taste a note of vanilla or caramel in the mix, it would be a step up from what it actually tastes like. Although I think this flavor has a lot of potential, it really comes up short in this Chobani Zero Sugar selection.
8. Toasted Coconut Vanilla
Before trying the Zero Sugar Toasted Coconut Vanilla flavor from Chobani, I really thought it might end up being the best variety of the entire lineup. It's something different than the standard fruity flavors I'm used to from other Greek yogurt brands, and it sounds neutral enough that it could be used as a base for a delicious yogurt bowl, complete with homemade crunchy granola and various other yogurt toppings like fruit or chocolate chips. I was dismayed to discover, though, that the flavor of this yogurt is actually quite strange. Does it taste like toasted coconut? Absolutely. It also packs a powerful punch of vanilla as well. But something about the not-sweet sweetness makes this stuff taste like coconut-flavored lotion or body butter in a way that's not very appetizing.
Many of the other Zero Sugar Chobani flavors on this list aren't very strong at all, with a mild, sometimes even barely perceptible taste. The toasted coconut vanilla flavor is one of the few exceptions. There's so much going on here without real sugar to back it up, and the result is a zero sugar treat that just falls flat and tastes odd. And while these other, more neutral flavors can be doctored with additional ingredients, it's harder to work with a flavor profile like this one that's just too pronounced from the start.
7. Strawberry Cheesecake
There are times when you may be craving dessert, but you want to eat something that's a little less indulgent than your favorite brownie recipe. This is when you should be checking out dessert-flavored yogurts. And no, not all of them are packed with sugar. Chobani's Zero Sugar Strawberry Cheesecake yogurt is one of those options that goes light on the sugar, but ostensibly still offers a decadent experience. Except, I don't really think this yogurt flavor lives up to its "cheesecake" descriptor. Honestly, it doesn't taste like cheesecake in the slightest — so much so, that I wonder how the creators of the flavor even settled on this name. In fact, even the strawberry notes are hard to pick up on, even though they're more perceptible than anything reminiscent of cheesecake.
That lack of a strong, pronounced flavor is why Chobani's Zero Sugar Strawberry Cheesecake yogurt lands squarely in the bottom half of this list. But why doesn't it rank as poorly as some of the others if it doesn't live up to its name? It all comes down to the fact that this isn't an unpleasant yogurt overall. Sure, it's nothing to get excited about, but you definitely could add other elements to it to make it more interesting and taste even better, so that saved it from falling to the very bottom of the list.
6. Black Cherry
A lot of the time, I've found that cherry-flavored products taste kind of medicinal. Maybe I was just subjected to too much cherry-flavored medicine as a child, but it's a flavor that can easily make me wince. Unfortunately, Chobani's Zero Sugar Black Cherry yogurt has some of that exact medicinal flavor I specifically dislike. It's not that it doesn't taste like real cherries — rather, it tastes like cherries, but with the addition of an unpleasant, clinging sweetness that doesn't know when to stop. In this case, though, that sweetness doesn't come from real sugar, which perhaps makes it a little less potent than it otherwise might be.
The saving grace of this yogurt flavor is the fact that the cherry note is quite mild. Yes, you can taste some of that cherry in the mix, but it's not especially bold. Similarly, the sweetness is rather tamed as well, so you get a yogurt flavor that stays in the background, claiming more of a supporting role. It may not taste that great on its own, but I think that this yogurt variety could still be used as a base for a yogurt bowl. Adding some real cherries on top would help pull out more of those natural flavors, and dark chocolate would probably complement those dark red fruit notes and give it more excitement.
5. Peach
I'd never think to pick up peach yogurt when there are so many other flavors to choose from. I love peaches, but because of their juiciness, I don't really think of them as the ideal fruity addition to creamy, milky yogurt. However, the combination of peach and Greek yogurt — even without any real sugar — comes together nicely in this product. I like that the peach flavor here tastes genuine, instead of having the artificial tinge you might expect from a zero sugar packaged food item, with a sweetness that doesn't immediately come off as not being derived from actual sugar.
But, like some of the other yogurt flavors on this list, the peach variety doesn't seem to be totally balanced. The peach flavors are extremely pronounced in a way that can be a little overpowering by the time you get to the bottom of the cup. And if you were to add real chunks of peach to your bowl, it would almost certainly be overkill. Because that flavor is solid, it's not that big of a problem, but I would prefer more of a middle ground where you can taste the flavor, but it doesn't feel like it's smacking you across the face.
4. Blueberry
When I choose a flavored yogurt of my own volition (and not to conduct a taste test), I usually opt for more berry-forward ones, so it's no surprise that I generally like the blueberry flavor of Zero Sugar Chobani. There's definitely a berry-forward flavor here, even if it doesn't taste like blueberries specifically. When I took a closer look at the nutritional information of the product, I realized that it doesn't contain blueberries at all, but rather the ever elusive "natural flavors." Obviously, this isn't ideal — I'd rather Chobani rely on the named ingredient to actually flavor its yogurt — but considering that the end result is still pleasant, this flavor earns its relatively high spot in this ranking.
Most of the other flavors we've looked at until this point are unbalanced in some way, either offering too strong of a flavor, or one that isn't pronounced enough. This yogurt, though, strikes a happy medium, offering enough boldness to make you feel like you're actually eating a flavored yogurt, but not so much that your taste buds are completely overwhelmed. Although it may not be the very best selection in the Chobani Zero Sugar lineup, it's tasty enough that I'd revisit it again.
3. Mixed Berry
While Chobani's Zero Sugar Blueberry flavor is worth checking out, I don't think it's quite as good as the Mixed Berry variety. While the blueberry leaned toward the sweeter end of the fruit spectrum, this one seems to tap into tartness more. As someone who loves the tartness of berries, I can't help but to enjoy this take on yogurt. And because there's a bit more tang than you'd find in other sugary yogurts, that touch of sweetness from the inclusion of stevia leaf and monk fruit extracts creates a nice balance in the treat. I think you could really improve the yogurt's overall flavor by adding some actual berries into the mix, though. (And, as you may have already assumed based on the other yogurts, it doesn't contain any actual berries as-is.)
There are, of course, plenty of other berry-flavored Greek yogurt products out there to choose from, and this one isn't exactly groundbreaking. However, I think Chobani managed to pull off the whole zero sugar thing here especially well. Therefore, if you're specifically looking for a sugar-free berry yogurt option, you can rest assured that you don't have to sacrifice flavor for nutritional benefits with this one.
2. Milk & Cookies
Sure, the strawberry cheesecake flavor fell short on the zero sugar, yogurt that tastes like dessert front, but that doesn't mean that the brand can't pull it off more generally. Chobani's Zero Sugar Milk & Cookies is actually a really solid option. Milk and cookies is generally a pretty mild-tasting flavor that also tends to be quite sweet, so I was really wondering whether Chobani would be able to pull it off. Admittedly, the flavor here is not especially strong, but those chocolate cookie notes do shine through, making every bite feel sort of indulgent and dessert-worthy. The added sweetness is also quite mild and balanced, offering enough of that sugary feel to keep the treat tasting sweet, without presenting too much of that unpleasant, sugar alternative aftertaste.
Ultimately, I do think that this is a really plain option, but it's one that's done well. This is another case in which I think there are probably better dessert-adjacent yogurt flavors out there, but the fact that this one boasts zero sugar is a huge selling point. For maximum deliciousness, though, it might make sense to add some additional crushed cookies or chocolate to the mix for a touch of crunch and texture beyond the expected creaminess of the yogurt itself.
1. Vanilla
Now, I know what you're thinking. How could vanilla, renowned as one of the most boring flavors ever, rise to the top of this ranking? Well, like I think I've already made clear, this entire lineup of yogurt isn't exactly the best I've ever tasted, but that's to be expected from a variety that features sweet flavors, but contains zero sugar. I think Chobani is trying to create flavor profiles that align to the expectations customers have for standard, sugar-filled varieties. And that's exactly why vanilla falls into the top slot on this list. This stuff undeniably tastes like vanilla, with a richness that makes you feel like you're tucking into a real treat. Somehow, those sugar alternatives really work here, melding well with that vanilla flavor and leaving no unpleasant aftertaste.
Plus, vanilla yogurt can be used as a base for so many different styles of yogurt bowls and other decadent yogurt-based treats, whether you want to add berries or tropical fruit, or more earthy additions like nuts and seeds. It's great to have a zero sugar yogurt option that's so accessible and flexible, and that doesn't feel like a huge step down from the standard product. For those who are looking for a basic, sweet-tasting, zero-sugar yogurt, Chobani's take on vanilla might just be the best choice.
Methodology
This ranking covers Chobani's entire lineup of Zero Sugar yogurt flavors. I used two main criteria to determine where each product on the list should end up. First, overall flavor was the most important factor. The best-ranked yogurts here are ones that have a pronounced enough flavor that they don't taste bland, but that also don't have a flavor that's downright overpowering. I also looked at sweetness and whether it was balanced with other flavors in the equation. The second factor I considered is how closely the flavor of the product matches the flavor named on the package. Flavors that more closely aligned to the product name generally ranked higher than those that didn't taste quite as similar.
