Canned cinnamon rolls are a delicious breakfast treat — especially on slow weekend mornings, when all you feel like doing is savoring the moment. While there's a variety of cinnamon roll recipes to make from scratch, dressing up canned cinnamon rolls is a low-effort way to make them reach bakery status. While canned cinnamon rolls usually come layered with cinnamon sugar, you can unroll each roll and add other toppings like chocolate chips, nuts, pie filling, jams, or pumpkin butter.

Once you've added your filling of choice to the center of each pastry, roll the cinnamon rolls back up to form a neat, tight roll as shown in the TikTok video below, and bake them up. When adding filling to the mix, make sure not to fill the cinnamon rolls too much, or else you'll risk a messy situation. On the contrary, a light layer of filling can go a long way to seriously elevate canned cinnamon rolls to a memorable treat just like you'd find at a bakery.

Creative filling ideas for cinnamon rolls

When adding filling to the center of canned cinnamon rolls, the opportunities are pretty endless. Overall, you want to choose a filling that accentuates and pairs well with the cinnamon in the pastry. For example, a spice-forward filling like apple pie filling or pumpkin will only accentuate the flavors. Chocolate lovers, for instance, might also like to add a bit of Nutella or sprinkle in a few mini chocolate chips before rolling the pastries back up to bake.

For extra texture and flavor, you can also fill cinnamon rolls with raisins, chopped pistachios, or another nut like pecans. You could add a bit of no-bake cheesecake (flavored or regular) to the center to soften and add depth to the cinnamon rolls, while pairing nicely with the pastry's spiced center. Another idea is to stuff canned cinnamon rolls with sliced bananas for a fruity, caramelized baked flavor that complements the notes of the cinnamon and sugar nicely.

Past wet fillings, you can also add dry ingredients like more spices, cocoa, or even espresso powder to the center of a canned cinnamon roll. Take, for instance, cardamom or nutmeg. Also try adding complementary toppings other than the typical icing sugar packet. For example, if you fill your cinnamon roll with apple pie filling, try topping apple cinnamon rolls with a crumble topping to give them a serious flavor boost reminiscent of your favorite pie or coffee cake.
