Erin Napier knows that a stylish home relies on color. According to the interior design pro and co-host of HGTV's "Home Town," homeowners should stay true to whatever paint colors bring them joy, even if those colors happen to be bold or off-trend. Staying true to this dogma, her divisive kitchen backsplash (lemon wallpaper) made waves among fans. Yet, on the other end of her guiding design spectrum, some of Napier's go-to paint hues lean downright neutral. Still, the wide-ranging versatility of neutral tones doesn't have to (and arguably should never) mean "boring." Enter: Rock Bottom. In an article on her website Laurel Mercantile Co., Napier names Sherwin-Williams Rock Bottom SW7062 as one of her all-time favorite paint shades to use in a home.

Rock Bottom is a dark green-gray with mossy undertones. Moody and modern, this deep-toned gray still manages to feel timeless. Thanks to the subtle green cast of this deep, muted charcoal, Napier calls Rock Bottom "a chameleon" depending on the light that hits it. "Sometimes it's black, sometimes it's green, sometimes it's blue," she writes. "All the time, it's dramatic without being cold, and I used it for our kitchen in dutch door and window mullions as well as the exterior trim on the Smith home from season 2 of 'Home Town.'" Rich and versatile Rock Bottom can suit myriad spaces and fit with any style. Apparently, plenty of other aesthetically minded customers are digging the shade, too: Rock Bottom was named Sherwin-Williams' September 2026 Color of the Month.

Deep gray-green Rock Bottom toes the line between urban and organic

Since lighting conditions determine which undertones are more prominent, Rock Bottom makes an excellent candidate for uses both inside and outside the house. On a home exterior, this deep gray-green would make a contrasting accent to organic materials like a river stone facade or cabin-style raw wood. Indoors, Rock Bottom can be brightened by bordering crisp white trim or crown molding (or both). Or, to lean into Rock Bottom's depth, try painting the trim a deep gray-brown hue; the Sherwin-Williams website suggests "Felted Wool" (SW9171) as a complementary, moody shade.

Got wood plank ceilings? Rock Bottom could emphasize the warm tones of the wood while contributing an elevated, modern touch that steers the design away from leaning one-note rustic. In the kitchen, this deep green-gray would provide an eye-catching contrast to white cabinets, white tile backsplashes, and gray or black countertops. Alternatively, Rock Bottom could be used to paint dimensional cabinets that pop out along white-painted walls. Warm-toned hardware like aged brass knobs and handles would complement the grounded green undertone. However you choose to put this dynamic, dramatic, yet never-overpowering shade to use, be sure to play up the contrast.

At Lowe's, a quart of Sherwin-Williams Rock Bottom SW7062 paint currently runs for $25.98. Craving more colorful inspiration? Napier also swears by the warm, coastal flair of Valspar's "Shell White" and the muted green tones in Benjamin Moore's "Misty Air."
