5 Chocolate-Covered Treats To Buy From Costco, Ranked

I love chocolate, and I always have. There is a wonderful balance of flavors, from the earthiness of cocoa powder to the sweetness of sugar. Sure, you can grab a small bar at a grocery store, but where do you go when you want something more? Costco, of course. There's no better place to grab some bulk chocolate items than my beloved mega-warehouse. As a Costco member, I wanted to try some chocolate-covered treats the chain has within its walls. The big-box retailer actually has quite a lot of chocolate items, but I really wanted to focus on things that you could consider as chocolate-covered.

Additionally, I had to keep a budget in mind without spending hundreds of dollars, so I landed on a select few chocolatey sweets and decided to rank them for you. I ultimately judged them by overall taste, quality, and texture, as I was looking for something that was most captivating and easy to eat. I did not find anything poorly made or unappetizing, so I focused on what was most interesting and compelling in terms of taste and texture.

5. Kirkland Signature Chocolate Almonds

Chocolate-covered almonds are pretty tasty. They are a relatively classic combination, and this blue bag of goodies from Costco comes with 48 ounces of product. Costco's version has crunchy roasted almonds and a milk chocolate exterior. This creates a milky and crispy duo that's quite alluring. That said, you definitely have to be a major fan of the nut and milk chocolate to purchase such a large quantity at Costco.

I would be more partial to dark chocolate, and I generally find this somewhat boring. It's just something to keep in your pantry as a little snack to grab by the handful, but I feel like there are a lot of other treats I'd pick first. Additionally,  I wouldn't necessarily feel so enamored with them that I'd rush out to Costco to purchase them or buy them frequently. They're fine with no major issues, but they're not the best item on this list.

Plus, I don't think this is the best milk chocolate-covered almond product on the market either, because it contains extra ingredients that just aren't needed, such as artificial vanillin flavoring and corn syrup. I would rather go with Walmart's bettergoods one, which I also thought was somewhat boring in a previous ranking, but at least it tasted better than Costco's.

4. Hershey's Almond Caramel Clusters

This creation does a wonderful job of blending the crunchiness of almonds with the luxurious mouthfeel of honeyed caramel and milky chocolate. The Hershey's Almond Caramel Clusters are a fun combination of flavors and textures that make for a tasty treat, whether you just want a little sweetness or prefer to pair them with an afternoon coffee. These aren't the most riveting option, but I could see them being really popular in households because the ingredients just work really well together.

The nutty taste and captivating crunch help it avoid feeling one-note or overly sweet. Without that addition, it would be a little drab in comparison, and it takes a chocolate-covered almond to a new level — which is why I placed it higher than the previous option. It's certainly not the best, most high-quality chocolate out there, thanks to additions like vanillin rather than just vanilla; still, it could be a good pick to keep in your pantry when you want a treat or to place out for guests. These are fine, but there are a couple of other interesting items I'd recommend over this Hershey's product. However, this might be a welcome Costco purchase for an office party since it's a well-known combination, like a more snackable Hershey's milk chocolate almond bar.

3. Kirkland Signature Caramel S'mores Clusters

The Kirkland Signature Caramel S'mores Clusters are a mainstay, but ultimately only you can decide if they are a worthwhile snack. In a previous Costco sweet snack ranking, our Tasting Table writer placed them toward the bottom half because of their sweetness and lack of uniformity. I agree with both sentiments; first, they are incredibly sweet. The caramel and chocolate create a sugar-rich combination, but then you get the vanilla-like sweetness of marshmallows and the complex graham crackers in random bites. One piece is enough to curb a sugar craving, and I found myself breaking them in half to eat it and leave the rest. However, this was tough because of the caramel's gooeyness, which seeped out and created stickiness that adhered to my fingers like chewed gum.

I like these and was surprised at the flavor dimension, particularly the little grahams, which stood out with the most intrigue and a nice crunch that kept the clusters from seeming too milky and ooey-gooey. I think these are worth stocking in your cabinet, but I feel like they'd last a good while in there — it's not something you eat several pieces of.

That said, I prefer Kirkland's version to Trader Joe's s'mores clusters because of the better graham and caramel addition. Again, we see vanillin in Costco's, but at least there's some actual vanilla extract in here too. I like the addition of molasses and honey in the grahams. But overall, would prefer to see vanilla in the milk chocolate instead of vanillin.

2. Tru Fru Milk and White Chocolate Frozen Strawberries

I'm a Tru Fru fan because it takes a spin on a classic chocolate-covered fruit. This time around, you get a frozen product. Tru Fru Milk and White Chocolate Frozen Strawberries combine chocolates to create a layered experience in a convenient 24-ounce bag. As I sink my teeth into it, I taste that milky chocolate first. There's a light white chocolate flair, but the ripe, sweet strawberry takes up most of the flavor experience.

As I chew, everything melds into a delightful flavor with an icy texture that makes it even more interesting. I even caught these on sale, so I saved a little over $3, which can make all the difference if you're trying to decide whether to get them for the first time (stock up when they're discounted). I think these are fun to keep on hand in the freezer because you genuinely can just pop out one and enjoy it as a treat.

The sizing can range a little bit, so one large piece feels quite satisfactory. I can appreciate the relatively minimal ingredients that make it taste straightforward yet high-quality. They are kind of fragile when you bite into them, so you might notice the chocolate fragmenting. Just keep a napkin or plate handy, and you're ready to go. I've tried all the currently available Tru Fru flavors and would love Costco to introduce some of the dark chocolate varieties or even the piña colada pineapple one.

1. Häagen Dazs Dubai Style Chocolate Mini Ice Cream Bars

Whether you like a pistachio and chocolate pairing or not, you can't deny that Dubai-inspired treats are available all over the place, like chocolate pieces or even various Dubai chocolate bars. For my chocolate-covered taste test, I ultimately picked out the Dubai Style Chocolate Mini Ice Cream Bars by Häagen-Dazs, but the brand had other mini ice cream bars in the freezer section if you prefer to go in another direction.

These have a chocolate exterior with toasted kataifi adhered to it. The combination creates a balanced textural contrast, offering a hint of crunch without overthrowing the ice cream's richness. Then there's the pistachio ice cream base made with cream, skim milk, sugar, pistachio paste, and egg yolks. It's distinctly pistachio-flavored, but again, doesn't seem particularly intense. Importantly, I appreciate the use of actual vanilla extract in the milk chocolate.

These come with 20 small bars, which I actually think are the perfect size since they're so rich. It feels totally satisfying but not overwhelming like a larger size might. While I know not everyone likes this flavor or texture combo, I'd feel very confident handing them out at a party. Everyone in my family liked these, from toddler to grandpa.

Methodology

I was working with a somewhat limited inventory, so this list is quite short. I didn't have any major issues, so I judged them based on how they tasted and the overall ingredient and flavor quality. I was looking for something with the most powerful, dynamic flavors, so you will see items that are relatively neutral or plainly flavored toward the bottom of the list. That does not inherently mean they are bad, and I think there are plenty of uses for them.

Higher-ranking treats had more complex flavor profiles and interesting textures to help set them apart. As you might already know, the thing with Costco is that the items are quite large; therefore, it is helpful to have an understanding of what you like and plan to eat since you may very well be consuming them for quite a long time. My top two picks are the most interesting and worthy of taking up space in your freezer.
