The Extra-Cheesy Culver's Trick That Makes Your Chicken Sandwich 10X Better
Someone once said cheese makes everything better, and it's hard to argue against that, at least if you're a true cheese fanatic. A 2024 International Food Information Council survey found that 90% of respondents ate cheese at least once a week. If you're one of those cheese fans and also enjoy Culver's Crispy Chicken, it makes sense that you might want to give it an extra cheesy boost when you're looking to maximize flavor. If there's one thing that Culver's is known for, it's cheese, so you can take your chicken sandwich to the next level by adding sliced cheese plus a side of cheese sauce for dipping.
We previously shared five ordering tips to get the best Culver's chicken sandwich, and adding cheese made the list. The Crispy Chicken sandwich from Culver's is normally served with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and dill pickles on a brioche bun. You can also order it with a slice of American, Cheddar, or Swiss cheese. You could choose all three to triple down on cheesy goodness for about $0.30 extra per slice, depending on location. With a side of Culver's Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Sauce for about $0.89 more, you can either dip each bite or pour it over the top for the cheesiest and messiest version of the sandwich. Using it as a dip ensures you get as much or as little cheese as you want with each bite, and is probably your best option for controlling the level of cheesiness.
Say cheese, please
If you want the cheesy flavor to be a standout, then your best bet is to either get a slice of each kind along with the cheese sauce or stick with Swiss and the sauce for a more balanced combination. Because the cheese sauce is already cheddar-based, you'll be getting more of the same taste with a slice of cheddar on your sandwich. Likewise, the milder American cheese will likely get lost in the taste of the sauce. Swiss brings nutty, earthy notes, plus a hint of sweetness that contrasts with the savory, sharp elements in the cheese sauce. Pairing Swiss with the cheddar sauce gives you a more complex cheese flavor without piling all three sliced cheeses onto the sandwich, which could be too much.
Culver's itself has acknowledged the idea of boosting the cheesiness of its sandwiches using the Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Sauce. When we wrote about upgrading a Culver's pot roast sandwich with the sauce, we mentioned how the restaurant has recommended the combination.
You could also try making a Crispy Chicken version of the legendary CurderBurger, which started life as an April Fool's joke but eventually appeared on limited-time menus. That's a Culver's ButterBurger topped with a larger version of the chain's fried cheese curds. Variants of this sandwich have been made in the past with diners adding the cheese curd patty to a chicken burger with marinara sauce to make a Chicken Parm-type sandwich. Another variant tops a ButterBurger with gravy, curds, and fries to make a Poutine Burger, and you could easily do the same with the chicken sandwich.
