Even if you don't grill very often, odds are, you've heard of Blackstone. While the brand has been around since 2008, it's taken off in recent years as more home cooks are realizing how much fun it can be to cook everything, from burgers to bacon to fajitas, on a griddle. But they aren't cheap, with most griddles priced upward of $300. Before investing in one, you might be curious to know just how long a Blackstone griddle is built to last — but the answer isn't so straightforward.

According to Blackstone's website, its griddles are "built to last a lifetime," but if you don't take care of yours, its lifespan is likely to be much shorter. While Blackstone doesn't provide a specific number of years that its products should last, plenty of owners have shared their experience with the grill's longevity. One Redditor said that theirs was nine years old and still functioning pretty well. "It looks its age, but still grill's like a champ," they wrote. Another said that theirs was nine years old as well, and that they've never needed to replace any part of the griddle over that timespan.

Nine years and counting is pretty good, especially considering that the average American replaces their grill every three years, according to Watson's. But again, it all comes down to maintenance. Luckily, basic maintenance after each use is easy, and it can ensure that yours actually does last a lifetime.

How to keep your Blackstone up and running for generations

Cleaning and seasoning your Blackstone griddle is one of the most important steps to maintaining it, and the company has a couple of basic steps you can take to do so. After using your griddle, let it cool down a little bit before cleaning up. Then, remove any stuck-on food from your Blackstone with a scraper. However, if there are any tough spots, work while the griddle is still a little warm after cooking and pour water over it; the heat will warm the water and help it loosen any residue. Once the surface is clear of any food debris, you can wipe it down with a paper towel to gather any excess grease. Blackstone recommends rubbing a scouring pad over the surface before drying it and then, finally, coating it in a layer of oil to season it.

After cleaning and seasoning the surface of your Blackstone, you'll also want to make sure that it's kept in good condition until the next time you plan to use it. When you're not using the griddle, it's best to store it in a dry spot; otherwise, it can get rusty. Keeping it covered is also smart, as it will protect the grill against scratches, dust, and other debris. Overall, if you clean your Blackstone properly and keep it safe year-round, you're guaranteed to be cooking burgers on it for a long time to come.
