The French-Style Cream Cheese Find At Costco That Shoppers Swear Is Worth Trying

When Costco shoppers start raving about a particular item, it's worth paying attention. In our roundup of the best items to buy at Costco in August 2026, we spotlighted the St. Môret French Style Crème Cheese — and customers have been very excited to spot it on the shelves.

St. Môret is the leading fresh cheese in France, and in July 2026 it finally came to the States exclusively at Costco. What makes St. Môret French Style Crème Cheese different from your standard block of cream cheese is its texture and the incredibly simple, short list of ingredients. Containing only pasteurized cultured milk, pasteurized cultured cream, milk protein, and salt, this cheese is softer, creamier, and much more spreadable than what you're used to finding on American shelves. In Europe, cream cheese is generally softer than in the States — even the Philadelphia cream cheese is different in Europe.

"It's a lot smoother than regular cream cheese. I didn't have to work as hard to spread it," wrote one Costco customer who has already tried the St. Môret cheese. Its soft texture makes it the perfect companion to a loaded lox bagel, but it wouldn't be a good fit if you're planning to make a cheesecake. "I will add it to a scramble, cream-wine base, or even as a base for something simple like avocado toast instead of butter," reports a shopper.

Costco customers love the French cream cheese, but its price can be a deal breaker

Those who have tried the St. Môret cream cheese were largely happy not just with the texture but also with the slightly different flavor. "I picked it up and really enjoy it!" a customer commented on Reddit, continuing, "Tangy, softer and easier to spread also a thinner texture. I just put it on a toasted bagel with jam and the tangier flavor of this cream cheese works well with the jam." Somebody even compared it to Neufchatel, which is widely thought to be the oldest French cheese and somewhat of a "predecessor" of cream cheese.

St. Môret French Style Crème Cheese was not a dream find for everyone; some admit to preferring the classic Philadelphia. "If you grew up eating Philadelphia cream cheese, you will not like this. Texture is different, not as chewy," reads a comment on Reddit

Another sticking point is St. Môret's price, which is around $10 for 17.4 ounces. For comparison, a 48-ounce tub of Philadelphia cream cheese is selling for about the same price. To some, that's a deal breaker. "I saw this at my store Sunday, but passed because of the price. Then they had samples! It was good, but not worth the price difference," voiced one shopper. Still, the French cream cheese appears to be selling out fast. As one person reported, "Went to my Costco and it's already sold out. Hopefully they bring it back."
