You Could Get Grubhub+ For Free, Depending On Where You Bank

It's a bit unexpected, but maybe that's the point. According to a company statement, Grubhub, the food delivery service, is partnering with Bank of America to offer bank customers free access to Grubhub+, the on-demand company's premium plan. What do a bank and an app-based food delivery service have in common, you may ask? That's a good question. The answer is an overlapping customer base.

According to Investopedia, Bank of America is one of the top banking institutions for college students. College Finance lists branch accessibility (4,300 branches in 37 states), ATM accessibility (17,000 user fee-free access points), online banking, and savings incentives among its key features for U.S. students. And what do U.S. college students do with their money: One answer is they order a lot of food delivery. Significantly more than half (63%) of students cited in a Datassential study (via QSR) said they order food delivery from off-campus restaurants on a regular basis, and 62% order via mobile app.

But it's not just for students

While college students may align with both Bank of America's and Grubhub's target demographic, the one-year deal is available to all eligible Bank of America cardmembers. To get started, qualifying Bank of America debit or credit cardholders can enroll through April 20, 2023. Membership is effective for 365 days from enrollment date.

Grubhub+ members get free delivery for a year on eligible orders totaling at least $12. Membership also includes exclusive perks offered by participating restaurants. Subscriptions automatically renew at the monthly rate (currently $9.99, but subject to change) at the end of the promotional period.

But not everyone is eligible. The one-time-only offer specifically excludes commercial prepaid cardholders and Bank of America customers who have existing Grubhub+ memberships. Hang on. There's a consolation prize: Excluded cardholders still get $5 off their next three orders of $15 or more. It's not the $120 value of a full Grubhub+ membership, but at least it's something.
