If today's maxed-out Halloween yard displays (we're side-eyeing you, Spirit Halloween) leave you yearning (or screaming) for simpler times, a can of sweetened condensed milk and a bag of popcorn can satiate your hankering for some classic fall comfort, via a bygone-era sweet treat — caramel popcorn balls. These sticky, "sweater-weather," sugar bombs are not only perfect for Halloween gatherings, but also whenever the telltale signs of autumn begin to appear.

For the uninitiated, a popcorn ball is basically what it sounds like: a roughly tennis ball-sized orb of stuck-together popcorn. They're sweet, crunchy, and gooey (think: Rice Krispies treats, but with popcorn). Bound by butter, simple syrups or sauces, molasses, marshmallows, or a combination of these ingredients, popcorn balls can be customized in a variety of ways and tailored for any season or holiday. But the heyday for these vintage victuals was during the first half of the 20th century, when they were given out to trick-or-treaters, which explains their strong association with Halloween.

Just because popcorn balls are an old-fashioned snack we rarely see anyone eat these days, doesn't mean you can't still make them today, as many TikTokers have recently attested. It's an easy, fun, and low-cost treat. In a nut shell (or, er, corn kernel), all you have to do is make a batch of plain, unseasoned popcorn in the air popper, microwave, or on the stovetop, and cover it in homemade caramel sauce made with condensed milk. Allow the mixture to cool briefly, before separating and shaping the caramel-coated popcorn into individual balls.

Make your autumn a sweet one

For the sake of safety, before assembling your popcorn balls, you'll want to be sure to remove any unpopped kernels to avoid a chipped tooth or surprise visit to the dentist. To make about 8 cups' worth, you'll need a ¾-cup of kernels; although this yields nearly twice the amount of popcorn, this condenses back down to 8 cups once the caramel sauce is applied and the balls are molded.

Speaking of condensing, this festive fall treat gets its sweetness from a 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, which forms the base of the rich caramel sauce, along with 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 sticks of unsalted butter, 1 cup of corn syrup, molasses, vanilla, and salt. For specific instructions, there are various clips demonstrating just how to do it, such as this video shared by @DeliciouslyBold on TikTok. The creator smartly uses clear, paper-sized cellophane sheets to shape the popcorn into balls to avoid getting their hands all sticky. When tied with ribbon it also doubles as nifty packaging for easy distribution among guests as a party favor.

Once you have this basic version down, there are plenty of ways to make your caramel popcorn balls even more fun and flavorful. Not sweet enough for you? Add candy corn, butterscotch, caramel chips, or mini marshmallows to the mix. Want something a little more distinctly adult-only? Try hickory-smoked or spicy pecans, pairing it with Shock Top's new Candy Corn Wheat Ale. Chocolate lover? Don't hesitate to add a decorative drizzle of melted white, milk, or dark chocolate, which will harden as it cools. Otherwise, try autumn-hued sprinkles or sugar crystals to add a colorful touch of fall's bounty.
