While Hershey's line of milk chocolate products, from bars to Kisses, is what you might be more familiar with, the iconic company also has a diverse offering of dark chocolate candies. And many of them are historically famous candy bars in and of themselves. Mounds, Reese's Dark Miniature Cups and York Peppermint Patties all fall under Hershey's dark chocolate products. In a recent ranking of 9 Hershey's dark chocolate candies, York Peppermint Patties beat the Mounds bar by a long shot.

Both Mounds and York Peppermint Patty candies follow a similar theme of dark chocolate coating with a controversial filling that you either love or hate. They've also been longstanding Hershey's products, originating in the '20s and early '40s. But while Mounds came in second to last, York Peppermint Patties came in a respectable third place in our ranking. While we personally enjoy a sweet, creamy, yet chewy coconut filling to balance the bitterness of dark chocolate in a Mounds bar, the reason for its lower ranking is because of the weak taste of the dark chocolate and the ratio of chocolate to filling.

Not only does the chocolate-to-filling ratio work way better in the York Peppermint Patty, but the pairing of dark chocolate and mint is much more essential to the appeal of the candy. Whereas you could easily swap dark chocolate with milk chocolate in the Mounds, the contrast of sweet yet cooling mint and bitter chocolate is irreplaceable and a crucial reason for what fans love about it.

Fanfare for York Peppermint Patties

Fans of York Peppermint Patties posted many glowing reviews on Reddit that back up our high opinion of them. "I really liked the richness and slight bitterness of the chocolate coating," says one review. Redditors complimented the ratio and complementary robustness of the dark chocolate and peppermint, with the above user adding, "anytime the mint became overwhelming I simply let the dark chocolate melt on my tongue so the richness would cut through it."

Another Redditor thought that of all the chocolate and peppermint candies out there, "YPP [York Peppermint Patties] do it best." Redditors think that freezing York Peppermint Patties greatly improves the eating experience. Similar to the longstanding practice of eating the iconic Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies frozen, there's something about the cooling nature of peppermint that gets heightened by storing Peppermint Patties in the freezer.

Of course, York Peppermint Patties are a polarizing candy, so there were plenty of negative comments to contradict fans and our taste tester's own assessment. And most naysayers have qualms with the peppermint filling, which they liken to toothpaste. One Redditor wrote scathingly, "it's like if you wanted bad chocolate but also the effect of brushing your teeth." Despite the naysayers, York Peppermint Patties were one of our favorites from Hershey's dark chocolate lineup, and a refreshing yet complex dessert for lovers of the chocolate peppermint duo.
