There are many discontinued boxed cake mix flavors from Duncan Hines, and some of these varieties remain fondly remembered decades later. The Dutch Topping Cake Mixes are definitely among the dearly departed, though the buttery and crumbly taste lingers on through other products offered by the company.

First offered by the company in 1962, Duncan Hines' Dutch Topping Cake Mixes came with streusel-like toppings. The brand offered three different varieties: Apple 'N Spice, Butterscotch Crunch, and Cinnamon Raisin. The Cinnamon Raisin and Apple 'N' Spice cakes had spice-centered toppings, while the Butterscotch Crunch cake contained almonds and a butterscotch-laced blend.

These cakes are comparable to snack or coffee cakes,  which feature buttery spice and brown sugar toppings, served sans frosting, sliced and eaten oven-warm. They also harken back to Pennsylvania Dutch-style cooking, which features coffee cakes topped with a similar kind of crumb cake-based decoration.

The memory of Duncan Hines' Dutch Style Topping Mixes lingers on

Time passed, and Duncan Hines' Dutch Topping Cake Mixes were phased out. The company later went on to distribute similar baking mixes, however. Duncan Hines is linked to streusel-inclusive recipes such as the Sock it To Me Cake, which began appearing on the back of its Yellow Cake Mix boxes in the 1970s. It has sold mixes with crumb or streusel toppings, such as the Cinnamon Swirl Crumb Cake & Muffin Mix, which is part of its line of Dolly Parton baking mixes.

While Duncan Hines still doesn't sell any cake mixes under its brand name that include Dutch-style toppings, it does offer the Blueberry Streusel Muffin Mix and two types of Crumble Bar Mixes — one blueberry and one strawberry — that come with brown sugar and cinnamon toppings. Unlike other discontinued Duncan Hines mixes that deserve a revival but have been forgotten by consumers, the spirit of those Dutch Topping Cake Mixes still lives on in other ways.
